Apne Balak Aap Rakhiyan Lyrics

In the Gurbani line “Apne Balak Aap Rakhiyan”, the idea of deep relationship between Atman and Parbrahman has been expressed. This verse is from the sacred hymns of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, where the Guru speaks about the protection of His children by the Supreme Lord Himself.

This is a shabad from Guru Granth Sahib in which we are reminded that a devotee who has full trust in Waheguru is given strength, peace and support. The wording of Guru Sahib is not intricate but quite impactful, comparable to a parent's love for a child: A parent lovingly cares for a child, similarly the Creator cares for the one who remembers Him in devotion.

Apne Balak Aap Rakhiyan lyrics, meaning and translation are looked for by many as it is a comforting phrase for those who are in tough situations. The shabad reminds us that in the face of a person's helplessness, Divine grace can take away suffering and give stability to the mind.

This Gurbani is found in the Raag Bilawal, which is a joyous, peaceful and spiritual mode. Through these verses, Guru Arjan Dev Ji highlights the power of prayer, humility, and faith.

The shabad is about the Lord's listening to the prayers of His devotees, taking away pain, forgiving errors, and blessing them with the fruits of their heart's desire. Not only is it a prayer for protection, it's also a reminder that when we let go of the ego and walk with Naam, we connect with the Divine.

Hindi Translation

O Brother! The Guru, an embodiment of the Lord, has protected us, His children, with His own support. We have attained peace and tranquillity of mind, when our service was accepted and approved by the Lord, and we were filled with the eternal bliss and joy within our hearts. (Pause - 1)

The prayers of His saints have been heard and accepted by the True Lord who has given the boon of (lease of) life to them by casting away their malady of fever as the Lord's Greatness and might is limitless. (1)

O Nanak! I would offer myself as a sacrifice to the True Master, who has blessed us with all our cherished desires fulfilled. The Lord has bestowed on us the benedictions (gift) of True Name through His Grace, having pardoned all our sins through His might. (2-16-80)

Deeper Meaning of Apne Balak Aap Rakhiyan

In the shabad “Apne Balak Aap Rakhiyan” one of the most tender images found in Gurbani is that of the Creator and the human soul as parent and child.

The word ‘balak' (child) is used by Guru Arjan Dev Ji to refer to the position of the devotee before Waheguru. A child isn't relying on his own strength to protect himself, he naturally relies on the care of the parent. Similarly, in the same manner, Gurbani teaches that when a person leaves pride and puts his trust in the Divine, the peace of the heart deepens.

This does not remove all the difficulties of life from a Sikh. Instead, Gurbani reveals that a person is given the inner strength to deal with challenges through Naam, prayer and remembrance of the Divine. This protection is not just physical, it is protection from fear, ego, anger, attachment and spiritual confusion.

The verse:

Bhagat jana ki benati suni Prabh aap

Demonstrates the value of prayer in a personal way. Guru Sahib tells us that when the devotee calls sincerely then the Divine listens. Devotion is not a demand of God, it is a loving relationship with Him, in Sikhism.

Forgiveness is also discussed in the shabad:

“Dosh Hamare Bakhsian”

The human being is a fallible creature due to lack of knowledge and self-concept. Compassionate Waheguru is the one who accepts the sincere person who turns towards Him. Gurbani repeatedly tells us that Divine grace can change the life of a person.

There are two meanings to the word “rog” (illness) in the context of removing it. The physical pain can be cured by divine blessing but the deeper sickness mentioned in Gurbani is the sickness of separation from the Divine. When one forgets Naam, one becomes restless, and when one remembers Naam, one becomes stable.

The final line: “Nanak balihaari” expresses complete humility. Guru Sahib offers gratitude and surrender before Waheguru. This attitude is central to Sikh spirituality — recognizing that everything comes through divine wisdom.

For anyone going through fear, uncertainty, or hardship, this shabad offers a message of hope: the Divine is not distant. Like a caring parent, Waheguru watches over those who walk on the path of devotion, humility, and Naam.
