Satgur Bhikhia Deh Main

"Satgur Bhikhia Deh Main, Tu Samrath Dataar"; Vaar Suhi Ki Mahalla Pehla, Baani Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Page 790 Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

English Translation

Satgur bheekhia deh mai, tū samarath dātār.
Haumai garab nivārīe, kām krodh ahankār.
Lab lobh parajālīe, nām milai ādhār.
Ahinis navtan nirmalā, mailā kabahū̃ na hoe.
Nānak ih bidh chhuṭīe, nadar terī sukh hoe. ॥1॥

O True Guru! You are the greatest benefactor, bestowing all Your benedictions and favours on us. My earnest prayer to You is to bless me also with the boon of the True Name (as alms). O Nanak! With the support of this True Name, we could get rid of the vices of egoism, sexual desires, anger, and worldly attachment. If we were blessed with the support of the True Name, then we could throw out and burn the vices of worldly attachment and greed from the human body. Then we could purify this heart (mind) with Your True Name and renew it with puritanism, so that it could never again be made impure by the filth of sinful actions.

O Nanak! We could enjoy peace and bliss of mind and cast away all our ills and afflictions, provided we are bestowed with the Grace and benevolence of the Lord. (1)

Mahalla Pehla

Iko kant sabhāīā, jitī dar khaṛīāh.
Nānak kantai ratīā, pūchhahi bātṛīāh. ॥2॥

O Nanak! The Lord is the only spouse of all human beings, and all the beings seen in the company of the holy saints in the world are the partners (spouses) of the Lord-spouse. All these Guru-minded persons are immersed in the Lord-spouse, being imbued with the love of the Lord. Moreover, all other persons seek their advice in finding means of merging (uniting) with the Lord-spouse. (2)

Mahalla Pehla

Sabhe kantai ratīā, mai dohāgaṇ kit.
Mai tan avagaṇ etṛe, khasam na phere chit. ॥3॥

All other Guru-minded persons are also seen as friends imbued with the Lord's love, whereas I am the only unfortunate person without the presence of my Lord-spouse (like a woman without her spouse), so where will I get enlisted or in which category will I be considered? I have so many flaws and shortcomings within me that even the Lord-spouse will not care to look at me. (3)

Mahalla Pehla

Hau balihārī tin kau, sifat jinā dai vāt.
Sabh rātī sohāgaṇī, ik mai dohāgaṇ rāt. ॥4॥

I would offer myself as a sacrifice to the Guru-minded persons, who are always busy singing the praises of the Lord (with their tongue). All others are the blessed spouses of the Lord, having imbibed His love, whereas I am unfortunate, being devoid of His love. O friend! May the Lord make my life also fruitful by bestowing His love on this deserted and discredited person (like the deserted woman, winning the love of her spouse). (4)

Pauri

Dar mangat jāchai dān, Har dījai kirpā kar.
Gurmukh lehu milāi, jan pāvai nām Har.
Anhad sabad vajāi, jotī jot dhar.
Hirdai Har guṇ gāi, jai jai sabad Har.
Jag mahi vartai āp Har, setī prīt kar. ॥15॥

O Lord! May You bless me with Your Grace, for I am seeking the favour of Your boon (of the True Name), as I am waiting like a beggar at Your door. May You include this helpless and poor person amongst Your holy saints, so that I may also attain Your True Name. The Guru-minded persons have already merged their soul with the Prime-soul and are immersed in listening to Your all-pervasive (unstrung) music of Nature. (They are immersed in the love of Your True Name all the time.) They sing the praises of the Lord (with devotion) and salute the Lord with the recitation of the True Name (with the tongue). O Lord! You are pervading all over the world (through Your own Will), and the Guru-minded persons are always imbued with Your love. (15)

Punjabi Translation

ਹੇ ਗੁਰੂ! ਤੂੰ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਕਰਨ ਜੋਗਾ ਹੈਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੈਰ ਪਾ ('ਨਾਮ' ਦਾ) , ਮੇਰੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਾਮ ਤੇ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ। (ਹੇ ਗੁਰੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਲਈ) ਸਹਾਰਾ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਏ ਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਚਸਕਾ ਤੇ ਲੋਭ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੜ ਜਾਏ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਨਵੇਂ ਤੋਂ ਨਵਾਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਉਂ ਜਿਉਂ ਜਪੀਏ, ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਧਦਾ ਹੈ) 'ਨਾਮ' ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਕਦੇ ਮੈਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ (ਤਾਹੀਏਂ) , ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! 'ਨਾਮ' ਜਪਿਆਂ (ਹਉਮੈ ਦੇ) ਗੇੜ ਤੋਂ ਬਚੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਇਹ ਸੁਖ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।੧।

ਜਿਤਨੀਆਂ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਬੂਹੇ ਤੇ ਖਲੋਤੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਹਨ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਰਾਖਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਮੋਹਣੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ (ਇਕ ਦੂਜੀ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਪੁੱਛਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।੨। ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਹਨ, (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸੋਹਾਗਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਮ੍ਹਣੇ) ਮੈਂ ਮੰਦੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਕਿਸ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਹਾਂ? ਮੇਰੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਤਨੇ ਔਗੁਣ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਖਸਮ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਲ ਧਿਆਨ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ।੩। ਮੈਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਹੈ। (ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਰਾਤਾਂ ਸੁਹਾਗਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੇ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ, ਇਕ ਰਾਤ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਛੁੱਟੜ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਦੇਹ।੪।

ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਮੰਗਤਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਬੂਹੇ ਤੇ (ਆ ਕੇ) ਖ਼ੈਰ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੈਰ ਪਾ; ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਜੋੜ ਲੈ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਵਾਂ; ਤੇਰੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਟਿਕਾ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਵਾਂ, ਤੇਰੀ ਜੈ ਜੈਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਤੇ ਗੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਗਾਵਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਾਂ (ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਯਕੀਨ ਬਣੇ ਕਿ) ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ।੧੫।

सलोक महला १

सतगुर भीख्या देह मै, तू समरथ दातार॥
हउमै गरब निवारिए, काम क्रोध अहंकार॥
लब लोभ परजालिए, नाम मिलै आधार॥
अहिनिस नवतन निरमला, मैला कबहूँ न होए॥
नानक इह बिध छुटीए, नदर तेरी सुख होए॥१॥

महला १

इको कंत सभाईआ, जिती दर खड़ीआह॥
नानक कंतै रतीआ, पूछहि बातड़ीआह॥२॥

महला १

सभे कंतै रतीआ, मै दोहागण कित॥
मै तन अवगण एतड़े, खसम न फेरे चित॥३॥

महला १

हउ बलिहारी तिन कउ, सिफत जिना दै वात॥
सभ राती सोहागणी, इक मै दोहागण रात॥४॥

दर मंगत जाचै दान, हर दीजै कृपा कर॥
गुरमुख लेहु मिलाइ, जन पावै नाम हर॥

Hindi Translation

सलोक महला १

हे सतगुरु! आप सर्वसमर्थ दाता हैं। मुझे नाम की भिक्षा प्रदान कीजिए। मेरे भीतर से अहंकार, अभिमान, काम, क्रोध और अहंभाव को दूर कर दीजिए। यदि मुझे प्रभु-नाम का सहारा मिल जाए तो मैं लोभ और लालच को जला दूँ। तब यह मन दिन-रात नवीन और निर्मल बना रहेगा तथा पापों की मलिनता इसे कभी स्पर्श नहीं करेगी। हे नानक! इसी प्रकार जीव संसार के बंधनों से मुक्त होता है। जब प्रभु की कृपा-दृष्टि होती है, तभी सच्चा सुख प्राप्त होता है॥१॥

महला १

हे नानक! परमात्मा ही सब जीवों का एकमात्र पति (स्वामी) है। संसार में जो भी उसकी दहलीज़ पर खड़े हैं, वे सभी उसकी दुल्हनें हैं। जो जीवात्माएँ अपने प्रभु-स्वामी के प्रेम में रंगी हुई हैं, लोग उनसे प्रभु को प्राप्त करने का मार्ग पूछते हैं॥२॥

महला १

सभी जीवात्माएँ तो अपने प्रभु के प्रेम में रँगी हुई हैं, पर मैं अभागिन किस प्रकार की हूँ? मेरे भीतर इतने अधिक अवगुण हैं कि मेरा स्वामी मेरी ओर ध्यान तक नहीं देता॥३॥

महला १

मैं उन गुरुमुखों पर बलिहार जाता हूँ जिनकी वाणी में सदा प्रभु की महिमा का गुणगान रहता है। वे सभी प्रभु-प्रेम में रँगी हुई सुहागिनें हैं, पर मैं अकेली अभागिन हूँ जो उसके प्रेम से वंचित हूँ॥४॥

पउड़ी

हे प्रभु! मैं आपके द्वार पर खड़ा एक याचक हूँ; कृपा करके मुझे अपने नाम का दान दीजिए। मुझे गुरुमुखों की संगति में मिला लीजिए, ताकि आपका दास भी आपके नाम को प्राप्त कर सके। जो अपनी आत्मा को परमात्मा की ज्योति में लीन कर देते हैं, उनके भीतर अनहद शब्द निरंतर गूँजता रहता है। वे अपने हृदय में प्रभु के गुण गाते हैं और प्रभु-नाम का जय-जयकार करते हैं। प्रभु स्वयं समस्त जगत में व्याप्त है; इसलिए उसी के साथ प्रेम जोड़ो॥१५॥
