Suno Sant Pyare, Binou Hamare Jiyo; Bani Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, documented on Ang 678 of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji under Raga Dhanasari.

English Translation

Dhanasri 5th Guru. There is but One God. By True Guru's grace is He obtained.

( Sunaho Sant Pyare... ) O my dear saints, hearken ye to my supplication. Without the Lord, no one obtains salvation. Pause.

O man, do thou, only the pious deeds, To ferry across, God is the only ship, other entanglements shall serve thee no purpose. The real life consists in serving the luminous Lord and this instruction the Guru has imparted unto me.

Embrace not love for that, which has but little significance. At the last moment, it, shall not go with thee. O the beloved saint of God, with thy soul and body, remember thou the Lord, by whose association thine bonds shall be broken.

In thy mind, grasp the protection of the lotus feet of the supreme Lord and rest not thy hope on any other support. O Nanak, he alone is a devotee and he, the gnostic, the contemplator and the penitent, to whom the Lord extends His mercy.

ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਮੇਰੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਸੁਣੋ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਭੀ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।ਰਹਾਉ।

ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ) ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ (ਹਰਿ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੇ) ਕੰਮ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਣ ਲਈ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਹੈ। (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ) ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੰਜਾਲ ਤੇਰੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਣਗੇ। ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼-ਰੂਪ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਹੀ (ਅਸਲ) ਜੀਵਨ ਹੈ-ਇਹ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ।੧।

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਉਸ (ਧਨ-ਪਦਾਰਥ) ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਪਾਂਇਆਂ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ। ਉਹ (ਧਨ-ਪਦਾਰਥ) ਅਖ਼ੀਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ। ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਕਰ। ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ (ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ) , ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ (ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ) ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਬੰਧਨ ਮੁੱਕ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ।੨।

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਫੜ, (ਆਪਣੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ) ਕੋਮਲ ਚਰਨ (ਵਸਾ) (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ, ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਆਸਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੂੰਢਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਭਗਤ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਗਿਆਨਵਾਨ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ-ਅਭਿਆਸੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਤਪਸ੍ਵੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।੩।੧।੨੯।

हे प्यारे संतजनो ! मेरी विनती ध्यानपूर्वक सुनो; भगवान के सिमरन के बिना किसी को भी मुक्ति नहीं मिलती ॥ रहाउ ॥ हे मेरे मन ! शुभ एवं पवित्र कर्म करो, भगवान तो भवसागर में से पार करवाने वाला जहाज है; अन्य झंझट-जंजाल तेरे किसी काम नहीं आने। गुरु ने मुझे यह उपदेश दिया है कि अपने जीवन में परब्रह्म-गुरुदेव की ही उपासना करो।॥ १॥ उससे स्नेह नहीं करना चाहिए, जिसकी अपनी कुछ भी हस्ती न हो चूंकि वह जीवन के अंतिम क्षणों में मनुष्य के साथ नहीं जाता। तू अपने मन एवं तन में भगवान की आराधना कर, उसके प्रियतम साधुओं की संगति करने से तेरे माया के तमाम बन्धन समाप्त हो जाएँगे॥ २॥ उस परब्रह्म की शरण लो और अपने हृदय में चरण कमल का ध्यान करो।उसके सिवाय किसी अन्य सहारे की कुछ भी आशा मत करो। हे नानक ! जिस पर भगवान कृपा करता है, वास्तव में वही भक्त, वही ज्ञानी, ध्यानी एवं तपस्वी है ॥ ३॥ १॥ २६ ॥

In the Name of the Sole Supreme Being, Realized by the holy Preceptor’s Grace
(Suno Sant Pyare Binau Hamare Jio)
Beloved devotees of God ! listen to this my supplication;
Without devotion to God is no liberation found. (Pause)

My self ! in deeds of purity engage thyself.
The Lord is the liberator: of no use to thee are other entanglements.
The true life is to serve the Divine Supreme Being —
This teaching the holy Preceptor to me has imparted. (1)

Attach not your heart to what is of no worth,
And at the last goes not with us.
With mind and body to God be devoted, thou beloved saint of God —
By union with whom shall thy bonds be snapped. (2)

Take shelter with the transcendent Lord, in your heart lodge His lotus feet —
On no other shelter fix your hope.
Saith Nanak: He alone becomes a devotee, enlightened, of profound meditation,
To whom God shows grace. (3) (1.29)

ਸੁਨਹੁ ਸੰਤ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਬਿਨਉ ਹਮਾਰੇ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਕਾਹੂ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Lord-sublime, Truth personified & attainable through the Guru's guidance." O dear saints! Pray listen to our prayers and supplications with attention! Without the support of the Lord's True Name, no one has ever attained salvation! ( Pause)

ਮਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਿ ਤਾਰਨ ਤਰਨ ਹਰਿ ਅਵਰਿ ਜੰਜਾਲ ਤੇਰੈ ਕਾਹੂ ਨ ਕਾਮ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਵਾ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਸੇਵਾ ਇਹੁ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਨਾ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥
O, Brother ! We should perform those functions only, which could purify our hearts, as the Lord's True Name is like the ship of safety for crossing this ocean of life. Moreover, without the Guru's love and service, all the worldly entanglements and (involvements) attachments would be of no avail, I have been given only one message (guidance) by the Guru's teachings that the service of the Lord, who is pervading everywhere and is the main source of life to all, is only fruitful and worthwhile. (1)

ਤਿਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਨ ਲਾਈਐ ਹੀਤੁ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਬੀਤੁ ਅੰਤ ਕੀ ਬਾਰ ਓਹੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ॥ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਤੂ ਆਰਾਧ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸਾਧ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਛੂਟੈ ॥੨॥
O, Brother ! We should not develop the love for the persons or worldly possessions which are perishable and none of them would accompany us to the next world after death, O beloved saints of the Lord! Let us recite the True Name of the Lord with love and devotion (with body and mind) which would help in breaking (removing ) all the worldly (shackles) bondage and attachments. (2)

ਗਹੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਸਰਨ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਕਮਲ ਚਰਨ ਅਵਰ ਆਸ ਕਛੁ ਪਟਲੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ॥ ਸੋਈ ਭਗਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਧਿਆਨੀ ਤਪਾ ਸੋਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੩॥੧॥੨੯॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 678}
Let us take refuge at the lotus-feet of the Lord and discard all other support, which would cover up (hide) our light of knowledge and hopes. O Nanak! The person, who is bestowed with the Lord's Grace, is a true saint and learned person, practicing meditation and penance by singing the praises of the Lord. (3-1-29)
