Before his death in 1661, Guru Har Rai appointed his younger son, Har Krishan, as the 8th Guru when he was five years old. Before his death, Guru Har Rai had told his son, Guru Har Krishan, never to meet Emperor Aurangzeb. Even at that early age, Guru Har Krishan remembered a great many hymns of his predecessors and recited them with amazing appropriateness. The divine light of Guru Nanak kindled in him. His actions had the stamp of maturity.
On being approached for intervention in the issue of succession to Guruship, Emperor Aurangzeb decided to summon Guru Har Krishan and deputed Raja Jai Singh to plead with the Guru to visit Delhi for a discussion on the subject. The Guru accepted the Raja's invitation but told him that he would not meet the Emperor. Raja arranged Guru Har Krishan's stay in his bungalow where at present Bangla Sahib Gurdwara is located.
At that time smallpox had broken out in Delhi. The Guru and his disciples engaged themselves in the care and cure of the sick. In the course of that missionary work, Guru Har Krishna himself fell prey to smallpox and died in 1664. Before his death, Guru nominated his grandfather's brother, Tegh Bahadur, as his successor.
