"By the Grace of the Lord- sublime, Truth personified & attainable through the Guru's guidance."
The Lord who has created this Universe is truly praiseworthy, who has arranged to engage everyone after creation, in various functions and chores. When this life comes to an end this beloved body is brought in chains by the Yama (god of death) on the road (route) to hell. When the Lord's call is received as per His Will, (death comes) then all the relatives including brothers start crying and wailing at the loss. Oh, my mother! When the days of life span (were over) came to an end, this soul was separated from the body. Whatever fortune is pre-destined by the Lord's Will for an individual, he has to reap the fruit of his actions. In the future also one has to face the consequences of one's actions as per the Lord's Will Blessed and praiseworthy is the True Lord-Creator of this Universe, who has engaged all the beings in various functions (chores)! (1)
O, my Brother! Let us recite the Lord's True Name as the whole world has to face death (like this only). This life, including the various involvements, is unreal and transient, but everyone has to proceed to the next world. Why should we be proud of egoistic tendencies, when death is certain? (all have to go to the next world). This life is like the visit of a guest, which is short-lived and temporary, as everyone has to face death (one day) sooner or later. We should serve the Lord by reciting His True Name, which brings us joy and bliss in the Lord's Presence (Lord's Court) In the next world of the Yama, we have no say, and everyone has to reap the fruit of his actions. O, Brother! Let us remember and worship the Lord (by reciting True Name) as everyone has to leave this world one day. (2)
This world is full of sufferings and afflictions and the Lord's Will finally prevails and whatever happens, is as it pleases the Lord. The Lord is pervading all the lands, oceans, skies, and the (Earth) whole world and the limitless Lord is responsible for the creation of this whole Universe, which is beyond our comprehension and no one has been able to gauge His greatness and depth so far. The persons, who have recited the True Name, with single-minded devotion, have made a success of this human life. The Lord, according to His Will, degrades someone and upholds the honor and prestige of the same person after degradation and controls His creation. Whatever pleases the Lord, comes to pass in the world, while the world is full of sufferings and woes. (3)
O Nanak! The wailings and cries of a person, who weeps in the love of the Lord, are considered by the Lord as real and true, whereas the cries and wails of otherworldly people are for selfish ends and worldly possessions (and unreal). The whole world weeps at the loss (death) of those dear ones, who fulfill their needs and meet their requirements, not for the person), as such all this wailing and crying is useless. The world, forgetful of the Lord, cries for the loss of) worldly falsehood. The individual wastes this life and the human body without realizing the distinction between good and bad actions. (virtues and sins). Whosoever is born in this world, has to surely die one day, so where is the need for being proud with egoism?
O Nanak! If the human being weeps and wails at the separation from the Lord, with His love and devotion at heart, then it is worthwhile, else it is all fruitless and without any purpose. (4-1)

राग वडहंस महला १ घरु ५ अलाहणीआ ईश्वर एक है, जिसे सतगुरु की कृपा से पाया जा सकता है। वह जगत का रचयिता सच्चा पातशाह, प्रभु धन्य है, जिसने सारी दुनिया को धन्धे में लगाया है। जब अन्तिम समय पूरा हो जाता है और जीवन प्याला भर जाता है तो यह प्यारी आत्मा पकड़ कर आगे यमलोक में धकेल दी जाती है। जब ईश्वर का हुक्म आ जाता है तो प्यारी आत्मा यमलोक में धकेल दी जाती है और सभी सगे-संबंधी, भाई-बहन फूट-फूट कर रोने लग जाते हैं। हे मेरी माता ! जब जीव की जिन्दगी के दिन समाप्त हो जाते हैं तो शरीर एवं आत्मा जुदा हो जाते हैं। जीव पूर्व-जन्म में जैसे कर्म करता है, वैसे ही कर्म-फल की प्राप्ति होती है और उस ही उसका भाग्य लिखा होता है। वह जगत का रचयिता सच्चा पातशाह, परमेश्वर धन्य है, जिसने जीवों को (कर्मो के अनुसार) धन्धे में लगाया हुआ है॥ १॥
हे मेरे भाइयो ! उस मालिक को याद करो चूंकि सभी ने दुनिया से चले जाना है। इहलोक का झूठा धंधा केवल चार दिनों का ही है, फिर जीव निश्चित ही आगे परलोक को चल देता है। जीव ने निश्चितं ही संसार को छोड़कर चले जाना है और वह यहाँ पर एक अतिथि के समान है, फिर क्यों अहंकार कर रहे हो ? जिसकी उपासना करने से उसके दरबार में सुख प्राप्त होता है, उस प्रभु के नाम का भजन करना चाहिए। आगे परलोक में परमात्मा के अलावा किसी का हुक्म नहीं चलता और प्रत्येक व्यक्ति अपने कर्मों का फल भोगता है। हे मेरे भाइयो ! परमात्मा को याद करो, चूंकि सभी ने संसार को छोड़कर चले जाना है॥ २॥
उस सर्वशक्तिमान प्रभु को जो मंजूर है, वही घटित होता है। जगत के जीवों का उद्यम तो एक बहाना ही है। सच्चा सृजनहार जल, धरती, आकाश-पाताल में सर्वव्यापी है। वह सच्चा सृजनहार परमात्मा अदृष्ट एवं अनन्त है, उसका अन्त पाया नहीं जा सकता। जो लोग एकाग्रचित होकर परमात्मा का ध्यान करते हैं, उनका इस दुनिया में जन्म लेना सफल है। वह स्वयं ही सृष्टि का निर्माण करता है और स्वयं ही इसका नाश कर देता है और अपने हुक्म द्वारा स्वयं ही संवारता है। उस सर्वशक्तिमान परमात्मा को जो कुछ मंजूर है, वही घटित होता है और यह संसार उद्यम करने का एक सुनहरी अवसर है॥ ३॥
गुरु नानक का कथन है कि हे बाबा ! वही सच्चा रोता समझा जाता है, यदि वह प्रभु के प्रेम में रोता है। हे बाबा ! सांसारिक पदार्थों की खातिर जीव विलाप करता है, इसलिए सभी विलाप व्यर्थ हैं। यह सारा विलाप करना निरर्थक है। संसार प्रभु की ओर से विमुख होकर धन-दौलत के लिए रोता है। भले एवं बुरे की जीव को कुछ भी सूझ नहीं और इस शरीर को वह व्यर्थ ही गंवा देता है। इस दुनिया में जो भी आता है, वह इसे छोड़कर चला जाता है। इसलिए अभिमान करना तो झूठा ही है। गुरु नानक का कथन है कि हे बाबा ! जो प्रभु प्रेम में विलाप करता है, वही मनुष्य सच्चा वैराग्यवान एवं सही रूप में रोता समझा जाता है॥४॥१॥

ਅਲਾਹਣੀਆ: ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਮਰਨ ਤੇ ਗਾਏ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੀਤ। ਜਦੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਜ਼ਨਾਨੀਆਂ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਰੋਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਮਿਰਾਸਣ ਉਸ ਮਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਕਵਿਤਾ ਜਿਹੀ ਵਾਂਗ ਕੋਈ ਤੁਕ ਸੁਰ ਵਿਚ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਉਹੀ ਤੁਕ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਜ਼ਨਾਨੀਆਂ ਰਲ ਕੇ ਸੁਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਥੋੜਾ ਪਿੱਟਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਪਿੱਟਣਾ ਭੀ ਤਾਲ-ਸਿਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮਿਰਾਸਣ ਦੇ ਉਸ ਗੀਤ ਨੂੰ 'ਅਲਾਹਣੀਆਂ' ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਇਸ ਰੋਣ ਪਿੱਟਣ ਵਲੋਂ ਵਰਜ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਨ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਿਸ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਨੇ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਆਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਲਾ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ ਵਡਿਆਉਣ-ਜੋਗ ਹੈ। (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹੀ) ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। (ਜੀਵ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਪਾਂਇਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ) ਜਦੋਂ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸਮਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਦੀ ਪਿਆਲੀ ਭਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ (ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ) ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਾਥੀ ਨੂੰ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਲਾ ਲਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਉਮਰ ਦਾ ਸਮਾ ਮੁੱਕਣ ਤੇ) ਜਦੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਲਿਖਿਆ (ਹੁਕਮ) ਅਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਾਥੀ ਜੀਵਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਲਾ ਲਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੱਜਣ ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਰੋਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ! ਜਦੋਂ ਉਮਰ ਦੇ ਦਿਨ ਪੂਰੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਾਂ ਸਰੀਰ ਤੇ ਜੀਵਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ (ਸਦਾ ਲਈ) ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਉਸ ਅੰਤ ਸਮੇ ਤੋਂ) ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਜੋ ਜੋ ਕਰਮ ਜੀਵ ਨੇ ਕਮਾਇਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ) ਜਿਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਲੇਖ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ) ਲਿਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਫਲ ਜੀਵ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਆਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਲਾ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ ਵਡਿਆਉਣ-ਜੋਗ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।੧।
