2. English Translation

Suhi Mahala - 1 ( Kaun Traji Kavan Tula Tera Kavan Saraf.. )

O Lord ! (You are too great and too deep for our probe !) Which weighing balance and what weights and measures should I take to evaluate Your Greatness and Vastness and whom (which jewelers) should I call for assessing Your Greatness as You are beyond our comprehension?

O, Lord! From which Guru should I take instructions and from whom should I get Your greatness evaluated? ( O Lord! Your Greatness is beyond our comprehension) (1)

O, beloved Master! You are limitless and so vast that it is beyond me to evaluate Your Greatness. You are pervading all over the place including all lands, oceans, Earth, Sky (ethereal space), and the surrounding space, being present within all small and large beings. (Pause - 1)

O, Lord! If I were to have a weighing balance of pure mind, with the weights of pure heart, then I could engage myself in Your service through the guidance of such a Guru (teacher). Thus I may be enabled to perceive and evaluate the Prime-soul within my soul (my inner self) and control my mind, gaining stability and peace of mind. (2)

The Lord Himself is like the weighing machine of True love, Himself is the evaluator (who is weighing) with the weights of meditation and the balance in the form of wisdom, and Himself is meditating (on the Lord). The Lord Himself supervises our actions and realizes the reward of those actions and Himself is the trader (Sikh) who has come for doing business in life. (3)

O, Lord! My mind is so restless that it is wandering all over the place, and moves across all over the world) in a moment. In fact, this mind is blind and very mean, which broods over all sorts of topics. (Thoughts) O Nanak! I am completely upset and undecided in the company of such a mind. How could I get away from the control of such a foolish mind, so as to imbibe the love of the Lord within myself? (My only prayer to the Lord is "May the Lord enable me to recite True Name, keeping this mind under check (control)!)" (4-2-9)

सूही महला १ ॥ हे ईश्वर ! वह कौन-सा तराजू है, कौन-सा तुला है, जिसमें मैं तेरे गुणों का भार तोलूं ? तेरी महिमा की परख करने के लिए मैं किस सर्राफ को बुलाऊँ ? कौन-से गुरु के पास दीक्षा लूं, और किससे मैं मूल्यांकन कराऊँ ? ॥ १॥

हे मेरे प्यारे प्रभु ! मैं तेरा रहस्य नहीं जानता। तू जल, पृथ्वी एवं आकाश में भरपूर है और तू स्वयं ही सबमें समाया हुआ है।॥ १॥ रहाउ॥

हे परमात्मा ! मेरा मन ही तराजू है और मेरा चित ही तुला है। मैं तेरी उपासना करूँ, यही सर्राफ है। अपने मालिक को मैं अपने हृदय में ही तोलता हूँ तथा इस विधि द्वारा मैं अपना चित उसमें लगाकर रखता हूँ ॥ २॥

परमात्मा स्वयं ही कांटा, स्वयं ही तौल, स्वयं ही तराजू है और वह स्वयं ही तोलने वाला है। वह स्वयं ही देखता है, स्वयं ही समझता है और स्वयं ही व्यापारी है॥ ३॥

मेरा यह मन अन्धा है, नीच जाति का एवं परदेशी है। यह एक क्षण में ही कहाँ से लौटकर आ जाता है और तिल मात्र समय के उपरांत फिर कहीं जाता है अर्थात् हर वक्त भटकता ही रहता है। हे ईश्वर ! नानक इस मन की संगति में रहता है, इसलिए वह मूर्ख तुझे कैसे पाए॥ ४॥ २॥ ६॥

ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣ ਸਕਦਾ (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦੀ ਕਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਕਿਤਨੀਆਂ ਕੁ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਾਂ ਹਨ) । ਤੂੰ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸਭ ਥਾਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸਮਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈਂ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।

ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਕੋਈ ਐਸੀ ਤੱਕੜੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੋਈ ਐਸਾ ਵੱਟਾ ਨਹੀਂ (ਜੋ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਦਾਜ਼ਾ ਲਾ ਸਕਣ) , ਕੋਈ ਐਸਾ ਸਰਾਫ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੈਂ (ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਦਾਜ਼ਾ ਲਾਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਸੱਦ ਸਕਾਂ। ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਐਸਾ ਉਸਤਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਜਿਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਪਵਾ ਸਕਾਂ ਜਾਂ ਮੁੱਲ ਪਾਣ ਦੀ ਜਾਚ ਸਿੱਖ ਸਕਾਂ।੧।

ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਤੱਕੜੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਏ, ਜੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਚਿੱਤ ਤੋਲਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਵੱਟਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਏ, ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰ ਸਕਾਂ, ਤੇਰਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ ਸਕਾਂ (ਜੇ ਇਹ ਸੇਵਾ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਸਰਾਫ਼ ਬਣ ਜਾਏ (ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੈਂ ਅੰਤ ਤਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਾਂਗਾ, ਪਰ) ਇਹਨਾਂ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ ਕੇ ਰੱਖ ਸਕਾਂਗਾ। (ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਬੈਠਾ ਜਾਚ ਸਕਾਂਗਾ।੨।

(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹਰੇਕ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਭੀ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜਾਚ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ) ਆਪ ਹੀ ਤੱਕੜੀ ਹੈ, ਤੱਕੜੀ ਦਾ ਵੱਟਾ ਹੈ, ਤੱਕੜੀ ਦੀ ਬੋਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਤੋਲਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਦਿਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ-ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ (ਨਾਮ) ਵਣਜ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।੩।

ਅੰਞਾਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਉਸ ਮਨ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ ਜੋ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ ਜੋ (ਜਨਮਾਂ ਜਨਮਾਂਤਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨਾਲ) ਨੀਵੀਂ ਜਾਤਿ ਦਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਰਤਾ ਮਾਤ੍ਰ ਭੀ ਕਿਤੇ ਇਕ ਥਾਂ ਟਿਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।੪।੨।੯।
