According to Historian Jadunath Sarkar, Guru Arjan, the fifth Sikh Guru, supported Khusro, who was one of the contenders for the Mughal throne and even provided him with money. After Khusro was defeated, Jahangir punished the Guru by levying a fine of two lakh rupees for his betrayal. Guru Arjan did not pay the amount, was imprisoned and subjected to torture which was standard practice for those who did not pay their revenues during that period.
The Sikh history after Guru Arjan Dev Ji’s martyrdom is replete with threats, atrocities, punishments, arrests, tortures, deaths and murders. The sacrifice of Guru Arjan Dev Ji made the Sikh community understand that one has to accept the will of God with grace.
This made Sikhs face any future tortures with joy while keeping their faith intact at any price. This strength and resilience were from Guru Arjan Dev ji who gave up his life to make the Sikhs prefer death with dignity rather than a life of dishonour, thus making them the saint-soldiers (Sant-Sipahi).
The martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Ji has left a deep imprint on the Sikh mind. To enhance the spirit of fearlessness among the Sikhs, the sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind Sahib wore two swords, Miri-Piri to represent spiritual and temporal authority.
He started teaching the Sikhs the use of weapons, built the Akal Takht (The Seat of the Timeless) and encouraged valour through Shabads (Vars). Such actions resulted in a drastic change in Sikhism and led to the formation of the Sant-Sipahi movement. Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji also raised an army and emerged victorious in all the four wars that he waged.
