1. English Translation

(Bin Satgur Seve Jeea Ke Bandhna... )

Slok Mahalla 4th

All the worldly chores, which a person performs except the service of the True Guru, bind the individual in worldly falsehood (Maya). Man undergoes torture through the cycle of births and deaths as without serving the True Guru, he cannot find any solace or rest anywhere. All talk, without referring to the service of the True Guru is also, without any interest or taste and is tasteless but the true service could be performed only when the True 'Name gets· inculcated in the heart. O, Nanak l Man is driven to the dungeon of hell without rendering service to the True Guru and faces the torture of Yama (god of death) finally being led to hell, with a blackened face. (1)

Mahalla - 3rd

The Guru-minded persons, who develop love and devotion for the Lord, are engaged in the service of the Guru. O, Nanak! Such Guru-minded persons, with the recitation of True Name like a success of their lives and in addition help others as well, including all family members to swim across this ocean.

Pouri: The Lord Himself is the school, Himself the teacher, and He Himself brings students to study in the school. The Lord is the father, the mother· and He Himself teaches the children, making them understand all the lessons, giving them wisdom. O, Lord! On one side, You are gaining knowledge to understand and appreciate everything while on the other side, You alone are responsible for making the children ignorant and devoid of any knowledge. O, True Master! You are honoring some of the 'persons, who are liked by You and approved by You, calling them in Your presence. Such Guru-minded persons who are honored by You proceed to Your presence, in Lord's court, with honor and flying colors. (11)

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਿਤਨੇ ਕੰਮ ਜੀਵ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਲਈ ਬੰਧਨ ਬਣਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਹ ਕਰਮ ਹੋਰ ਵਧੀਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਆਸਰਾ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ (ਤੇ ਇਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਮਰਦੇ ਤੇ ਜੰਮਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਕਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਫਿੱਕੇ ਬੋਲ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੱਸਦਾ; (ਇਸ ਦਾ ਨਤੀਜਾ ਇਹ ਨਿਕਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਜਮਪੁਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ (ਤੁਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ) ਜੱਗ ਤੋਂ ਮੁਕਾਲਖ ਖੱਟ ਕੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।੧।

ਕਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਸਵਾਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਕੁਲ ਭੀ ਤਾਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।੨।

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪਾਠਸ਼ਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਉਸਤਾਦ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮੁੰਡੇ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਨੂੰ ਲਿਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਾਂ ਪਿਉ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਾਲਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ; ਇਕ ਥਾਂ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਇਕ ਥਾਂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਾਲਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੰਞਾਣੇ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਹਰੀ! ਜਦੋਂ ਆਪ ਤੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਚੰਗੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਇਕਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਹਿਲ ਵਿਚ ਧੁਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਬੁਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ। ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪ ਆਦਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਉਹ ਸੱਚੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।੧੧।

सलोक मः ४ ॥ बिन सतगुर सेवे जीअ के बंधना जेते करम कमाहि ॥ बिन सतिगुर सेवे ठवर न पावही मर जमहि आवहि जाहि ॥ बिन सतिगुर सेवे फिका बोलणा नाम न वसै मन आए ॥ नानक बिन सतगुर सेवे जम पुर बधे मारीअहि मुहि कालै उठ जाहि ॥१॥
मः ३ ॥ इक सतगुर की सेवा करहि चाकरी हर नामे लगै प्यार ॥ नानक जनम सवारन आपणा कुल का करन उधार ॥२॥
पौड़ी ॥ आपे चाटसाल आप है पाधा आपे चाटड़े पड़ण कौ आणे ॥ आपे पिता माता है आपे आपे बालक करे स्याणे ॥ इक थै पड़ बुझै सभ आपे इक थै आपे करे इआणे ॥ इकना अंदर महल बुलाए जा आप तेरै मन सचे भाणे ॥

श्लोक महला ४।

सतगुरु की सेवा-चाकरी के बिना मानव जीव जितने भी कर्म करता है, वे उसके लिए बन्धन रूप हैं।

गुरु की चाकरी के बिना मनुष्य को कहीं भी सुखद स्थान प्राप्त नहीं होता, जिसके कारन वह मरता और जन्मता रहता है।

गुरु के सेवा के बिना मनुष्य रसहीन फीका बोलता है।

जिसके कारन परमात्मा का नाम आकर उसके मन में निवास नहीं करता।

हे नानक ! सतिगुरु की सेवा-चाकरी के बिना मनुष्य काला मुँह करवाकर अर्थात् बेइज्जत होकर जगत से चल देता है और यमपुरी में बँधकर दण्ड भोगता रहता है| १॥

महला ३

कुछ लोग सतिगुरु की सेवा-चाकरी करते हैं।

परमेश्वर के नाम से प्रेम लगाते हैं।

हे नानक ! वे अपने अमूल्य जीवन को सांवर लेते हैं और अपनी समस्त वंशावलि का भी उद्धार पर लेते हैं। २॥

पौड़ी

परमात्मा स्वयं ही विद्या का मन्दिर है, स्वयं ही विद्या देने वाला शिक्षक है।

स्वयं ही पड़ने हेतु विद्यार्थियों को लाता है। वह आप ही पिता है और आप ही माता है।

वह स्वयं ही बालकों को विद्वान बना देता है।

एक तरफ वह आप ही सब कुछ पढ़ता और बोध करता है किन्तु दूसरी तरफ वह आप ही जीवों को नासमझ बना देता है।

हे सच्चे परमात्मा ! कुछ जीव जो आप तेरे मन को अच्छे लगते हैं, उन्हें अपने दरबार में आतंत्रित कर लेते हो।

जिन लोगों को तुम गुरुमुख की बड़ाई प्रदान करते हो, वे तेरे सच्चे दरबार में विख्यात हो जाते हैं। ११ ॥
