The Lord, who is bewitching, beautiful and pervading in all beings is worthy of our love and is the support of our life. The praises of the beautiful Lord-benefactor are very (beautiful) interesting and charming but no one could describe them. Infact, this beautiful Lord-benefactor bestows His unison to such persons who serve the Lord with all humility, just as the wedded woman serving her spouse with humbleness. My eyes are anxiously waiting to have a glimpse of the Lord while the whole life is spent without gaining even peace of mind. We have used the collyrium of knowledge for our eyes of intelligence, food of True Name and many other means of beautification for uniting with the Lord, but without success. O Nanak! I would beseech the holy saints to enable me unite with the Lord whereas they have already got unison with Him through meditation of True Name. (1)

So long I do not get united with the Lord, I have to accept responsibility for complaints against my shortcomings; and whatever efforts we make for uniting with the Lord, there is nothing much which I could do. The man's mind is perishable though it tries all sorts of tricks through cleverness; even wealth is perishable; and the mind cannot rest in peace without meeting the Lord. Without achieving unity with the Lord, it is useless to engage oneself in dainty foods or beautify oneself; so how could we survive in this world without uniting with the Lord ? There is a strong urge within us to hope for meeting the Lord day and night but one cannot live for a moment without the Lord' the True Master. O Nanak! I am serving the saints, so that I may meet the (dear) loving True Lord through their Grace. (2)

Though we try our best to prepare our hearts for a unification with the Lord but without success, as there are numerous faults within me; so how could the Lord call me into His presence? I would, however, beseech the Lord that I may gain unity with the Lord, the fountainhead of blessings which is possible only through His Grace. O saintly friends! Remove this wall of ignorance and doubts and enjoy the sleep due to peace of mind, in a state of equipoise, as the unison with the Lord, even for a moment, brings us the control of nine treasures of the world. Once the Lord abides within the body, I would know the Lord's secrets and get acceptance in His presence, and then sing praises of the Lord in the company of holy saints, on the arrival of the Lord-Spouse with joy and satisfaction. O Nanak! I have sought refuge at the lotus-feet of holy saints, so that they may enable me to unite with the Lord. (3)

O Brother! I have attained the Ever-green Lord with the Guru's Grace in all respects, and all my worldly desires are fulfilled, my mind has attained peace and joy and the fire of separation from the Lord has been extinguished. Now the days are pleasant and nights are equally comfortable after having met the Lord; I have attained the bliss of the nectar of True Name, resulting in perfect joy. Now the Lord, Gobind and creator has appeared within my body and I am fully satiated, having perceived a glimpse of His vision. How many qualities of the Lord could I sing with my tongue, as He is beyond our comprehension ? Once we sang the praises of the Lord, in the company of friends, and saints, we could cast away all the vices like greed, attachment and egoism. O Nanak ! I would serve the holy saints, whose light of knowledge has enabled me to unite with the Lord; thus we sing praises of the holy saints who have developed an opportunity for uniting with the Lord. यह शबद गुरु ग्रंथ साहिब जी में राग बिहागड़ा में गुरु अर्जन देव जी द्वारा रचित है। इसमें ईश्वर के प्रति असीम प्रेम और उससे मिलने की प्रबल इच्छा का वर्णन किया गया है। इस शबद में गुरुदेव कहते हैं:

पहला पद: हे मेरे प्यारे और मन को मोह लेने वाले प्रभु, तुम मेरे हृदय में सुशोभित हो, तुम ही मेरे प्राणों का आधार हो। तुम सुंदर, शोभायमान, और अनंत कृपा वाले हो। तुम्हारे बिना मेरी आँखों में प्यास है, तुम्हारे दर्शन के बिना मेरी रातें व्यर्थ जाती हैं। गुरु जी कहते हैं कि ज्ञान और नाम की समझ ही मेरे सारे श्रृंगार हैं, और संतों की संगति में मुझे मेरा प्रिय मिल जाता है।

दूसरा पद: गुरुदेव कहते हैं कि लाख कोशिशें करने के बाद भी जब तक प्रभु का मिलन नहीं होता, तब तक सब व्यर्थ लगता है। प्रिय के बिना मन की शांति नहीं मिलती, भोजन और श्रृंगार भी अर्थहीन लगते हैं। दिन-रात की तड़प के बावजूद मिलन नहीं होता। गुरुदेव नानक कहते हैं कि संतों की कृपा से ही मेरे प्रभु से मिलन संभव है।

तीसरा पद: गुरु जी कहते हैं कि सेज एक होते हुए भी मुझे अपने प्रिय के दर्शन नहीं मिलते, मेरे अनेक अवगुण हैं, फिर भी मैं प्रभु से मिलन की इच्छा रखता हूँ। प्रभु की कृपा से ही मेरे सारे भ्रम और भय मिट सकते हैं। प्रभु के दर्शन से ही सभी धन-वैभव की प्राप्ति होती है। गुरु नानक कहते हैं कि संतों की शरण में ही मुझे प्रभु के दर्शन प्राप्त होंगे।

चौथा पद: गुरुदेव कहते हैं कि संतों की कृपा से ही मैंने हरि को प्राप्त किया। मन की इच्छाएँ पूरी हो गईं, और शांति प्राप्त हुई। वह दिन और रात सफल हो गए जब मैंने हरि के गुण गाए। भ्रम, लोभ, और मोह समाप्त हो गए, और सखियों के साथ आनंद और मंगल मनाया। नानक कहते हैं कि संतों की संगति में ही मुझे हरि से मिलन का योग प्राप्त हुआ।

यह शबद हमें यह सिखाता है कि ईश्वर से मिलने की तीव्र इच्छा, सच्चा प्रेम, और संतों की संगति से ही हमें प्रभु का मिलन संभव हो सकता है।

ਰਾਗ ਬਿਹਾਗੜਾ ਪੰਜਵੀਂ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ ॥ ਚਿੱਤ ਨੂੰ ਚੁਰਾਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ, ਆਤਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਗਹਿਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਰਮ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਸੁਹਣੀ ਹੈ ਕੀਰਤੀ ਮਿਹਰਬਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਦੀ ਜੋ ਪਰ੍ਹੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇਡੇ ਹੈ ॥ ਤੂੰ ਹੇ ਮਿਹਰਬਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਮਿੱਠੜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ਰ! ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਰਤੇ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਸਕੀਨ ਨੂੰ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਦੇ ॥ ਮੇਰੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਦੇਖਣ ਨੂੰ ਲੋਚਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ॥ ਰਾਤ ਬੀਤਦੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਨੀਦਰਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਦੀ ॥ ਮੈਂ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ-ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਸੁਰਮਾ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਭਜਨ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ ॥ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਹਾਰ-ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰ ਲੱਗ ਗਏ ਹਨ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿ ਉਹ ਸਾਧੂ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਤੇ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਸਦੇ ਭਰਤੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇਣ ॥

ਜਦ ਤਾਈਂ ਮੇਰਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਮਾਲਕ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਲ੍ਹਾਮੇ ਸਹਾਰਨੇ ਪੈਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਮੈਂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਦੇ ਉਪਰਾਲੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਪਰ ਮੇਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਉਪਰਾਲਾ ਭੀ ਕਾਰਗਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ॥ ਚੰਚਲ ਹੈ ਮਨੂਆ ਅਤੇ ਅਸਥਿਰ ਹੈ ਧਨ ਦੌਲਤ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਤ੍ਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਭੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਧੀਰਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ ॥ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹਨ, ਖਾਣ, ਪੀਣ ਤੇ ਹਾਰ-ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਸਤੂਆਂ ॥ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਰਤੇ, ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜੀਉ ਸਕਦੀ ਹਾਂ? ਰਾਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਦਿਹੂੰ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਤਰਸਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਤਿਹਾਈ ਹਾਂ ॥ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਮੈਂ ਇੱਕ ਮੁਹਤ ਭਰ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਚ ਸਕਦੀ ॥ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹੇ ਸਾਧੂ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਜੀ! ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਬਾਂਦੀ ਹਾਂ ॥ ਕੇਵਲ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦੀ ਹਾਂ ॥

ਆਪਣੇ ਪਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਰੀ ਇਕ ਸਾਂਝੀ ਛੇਜਾ (ਸੇਜਾ) ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਨਸੀਬ ਨਹੀਂ ॥ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਣਗਿਣਤ ਬੁਰਿਆਈਆਂ ਹਨ ਮੇਰਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਭਰਤਾ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੱਦ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? ਨੇਕੀ ਵਿਹੂਣ, ਆਬਰੂ-ਰਹਿਤ ਅਤੇ ਯਤੀਮ ਪਤਨੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਦੇ ਖਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਦੇ ॥ ਇਕ ਛਿਨ ਭਰ ਲਈ ਭੀ ਨੌਂ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਿਆ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੰਦੇਹ ਦੀ ਕੰਧ ਢੈ ਗਈ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਆਰਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਸੌਦੀ ਹਾਂ ॥ ਜੇਕਰ ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਮੇਰੇ ਘਰ (ਮਨ-ਮੰਦਰ) ਵਿੱਚ ਆ ਜਾਵੇ ਤੇ ਉਥੇ ਟਿਕੇ ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰਾਂਗੀ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਸਾਧੂ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਨਾਹ ਲਈ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਵਿਖਾਲ ॥

ਸਾਧੂਆਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੈਂ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ॥ ਮੇਰੀ ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ ਪੂਰੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੂਆ ਠੰਢਾ ਠਾਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਬੁੱਝ ਗਈ ਹੈ ॥ ਫਲਦਾਇਕ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਦਿਹਾੜਾ, ਸ਼ੋਭਨੀਕ ਉਹ ਰਾਤ ਅਤੇ ਘਣੇਰੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਖੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ, ਮਲ੍ਹਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਰੰਗ-ਰਲੀਆਂ, ਜਦ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪ੍ਰਮੇਸ਼ਰ ਆ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਕਿਹੜੀ ਜੀਭਾ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਡਿਆਈਆਂ ਵਰਨਣ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੀ ਹਾਂ? ਮੇਰਾ ਸੰਦੇਹ, ਲਾਲਚ, ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਐਬ ਮਿੱਟ ਗਏ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਸਹੇਲੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਉਂਦੀ ਹਾਂ ॥ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੈਂ ਸਾਧੂ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ॥
