The Unaccomplished (The Ungraceful Bride)
Unaccomplished with blames beyond count, how can I be His dame?
They are each better than the other, who would know my name?
Those who have had bliss with the Spouse, sister friend!
The shade of mango tree they attain.
Their virtues I possess not,
Whom should I blame?
What merits of Yours should I count?
With what Name should I realize?
In measurement to even one of your virtues,
A hundred times unto You I am sacrifice.
Attracted by gold and silver with pearls and rubies matched,
Bestowed by You I happen to be attached.
Bolstered with stones in the houses of clay,
I got involved and with my spouse won't stay.
The crows cry in the sky,
And herons have come in a row.
As I go to my in-laws
What face would I show?
I slept and slept and the day broke,
My path I have evidently lost.
Separated from the spouse
In misery myself, I have cast.
You are virtuous, I am all evil,
Nanak has this to pray on his part.
The happily-wedded have all the nights,
A night for the cursed may be set apart. (1)

4. Kuchaji Translation in English

"By the Grace of the Lord-Sublime, Truth personified & attainable through the Guru's guidance."

How could I approach my Lord-spouse for enjoying His company when I possess no qualities (Kuchaji), having all the faults (flaws) and shortcomings in me, which cannot be accounted for, just like the wedded woman forsaking her spouse? In fact, the Lord has many more beautiful beloved ones (devotees) surrounding Him to placate Him. Who would know my name even? (as I may be completely unknown there)?

The (women) friends, who have enjoyed the conjugal bliss of the Lord- spouse are like sitting under the shady tree of the Lord's worship and enjoy the spiritual bliss in the company of the holy saints. O, Lord! Whom should I curse and blame for my faults as I possess no virtues?

O, True Master! How could I remember You and with what Name shall I recall Your bounties? I would always offer myself as a sacrifice to the Lord as I can never approach His Greatness, as His benedictions are beyond our count. Lord! I have got so much attached and attracted to gold, silver, jewels and rubies and otherworldly possessions which You have bestowed on me for my comforts, that I totally forgot You. Even I have got completely lost in the love of buildings of stones and Earth, thus completely forgetting the Lord and His True Name.

Now the time has gone by, my hair has turned grey, and I am nearing the end of my life and (the individual is) about to be devoured by death. O, Man! With what face are you going to face the Lord, with no virtues or good deeds to support you, in the Lord's presence?

The human being, having lost the right path completely, has forgotten about the worship of the Lord and is going to face death without any creditable achievement. O, Lord! Having forgotten You, the man suffers, being entirely robbed of all virtues. O Nanak! My only supplication to the Lord is that I possess no qualities while the Lord is a personification of virtues only. May the Lord bestow this separated person (like the deserted wife (woman) from the spouse), having no experience of the Lord's love, when all the wedded women were enjoying conjugal bliss in the company of their spouses, at least some time in His company to enjoy His bliss! My whole life has been a sheer waste! May the Lord give me the boon of His company for a short while even (a moment) so as to gain the bliss of life, through His Grace! (1)

मंञु कुचजी अमावणि डोसड़े हउ किउ सहु रावणि जाउ जीउ ॥ इक दू इकि चड़ंदीआ कउणु जाणै मेरा नाउ जीउ ॥
जिन्ही सखी सहु राविआ से अ्मबी छावड़ीएहि जीउ ॥ से गुण मंञु न आवनी हउ कै जी दोस धरेउ जीउ ॥
किआ गुण तेरे विथरा हउ किआ किआ घिना तेरा नाउ जीउ ॥ इकतु टोलि न अ्मबड़ा हउ सद कुरबाणै तेरै जाउ जीउ ॥
सुइना रुपा रंगुला मोती तै माणिकु जीउ ॥ से वसतू सहि दितीआ मै तिन्ह सिउ लाइआ चितु जीउ ॥

7. Hukamnama Meaning in Hindi

(हे सहेली!) मैंने सही जीवन की विधि नहीं सीखी, मेरे अंदर इतने ऐब हैं कि अंदर समा ही नहीं सकते (इस हालत में) मैं प्रभु-पति को प्रसन्न करने के लिए कैसे जा सकती हूँ? (उसके दर पर तो) एक से बढ़ कर एक हैं, मेरा तो वहाँ कोई नाम भी नहीं जानता।

जिस सहेलियों ने प्रभु-पति को प्रसन्न कर लिया है, वह मानो (चौमासे में) आमों की (ठंडी) छाया में बैठी हुई हैं। मेरे अंदर तो वह गुण ही नहीं हैं (जिस पर प्रभु-पति रीझता है) मैं (अपने इस दुर्भाग्य का) दोष और किस पर दे सकती हूँ?

हे प्रभु पति! (तू बेअंत गुणों का मालिक है) मैं तेरे कौन-कौन से गुण विस्तार से कहूँ? और मैं तेरा कौन-कौन सा नाम लूँ? (तेरे अनेक गुणों को देख-देख के तेरा अनेक ही नाम जीव ले रहे हैं)। तेरे बख्शे हुए किसी एक सुंदर पदार्थ के द्वारा भी (तेरी दातों के लेखे तक) नहीं पहुँच सकती (बस!) मैं तुझ पर से कुर्बान ही कुर्बान जाती हूँ।

(हे सहेली! देख मेरे दुर्भाग्य) सोना, चाँदी, मोती और हीरा आदि सुंदर व कीमती पदार्थ- ये चीजें प्रभु-पति ने मुझे दीं, (और) मैं (उसको भुला के, उसकी दी हुई) इन चीजों से प्यार डाल बैठी। मिट्टी-पत्थर आदि के बनाए हुए सुंदर घर -यही मैंने अपने राशि-पूंजी बना लिए। मैं इन सुंदर पदार्थों में ही (फंस के) गलती खा गई, (इन पदार्थों के देने वाले) उस पति-प्रभु के पास ना बैठी।

माया के मोह में फंस के जिस जीव-स्त्री के शुभ गुण उससे दूर-परे चले जाएं, और उसके अंदर निरे पाखण्ड ही इकट्ठे हो जाएं, वह जब इस हाल में परलोक जाए तो जा के परलोक में (प्रभु की हजूरी में) क्या मुँह दिखाएगी?

हे प्रभु! माया के मोह की नींद में गाफिल पड़े रहने से मुझे बुढ़ापा आ गया है, जीवन के सही रास्ते से मैं विछुड़ी हुई हूँ, मैंने निरे दुख ही दुख सहेड़े हुए हैं।

हे प्रभु! तू बेअंत गुणों वाला है, मेरे अंदर सारे अवगुण ही अवगुण हैं, फिर भी नानक की विनती (तेरे ही दर पर) है कि भाग्यशाली जीव-सि्त्रयाँ तो सदा ही तेरे नाम-रंग में रंगी हुई हैं, मुझ अभागन को भी कोई एक रात बख्श (मेरे पर भी कभी मेहर की निगाह कर)।1।

(ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀਏ!) [ Kuchaji ] ਮੈਂ ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਚੱਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ, ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਤਨੇ ਐਬ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਮਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੇ (ਇਸ ਹਾਲਤ ਵਿਚ) ਮੈਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹਾਂ ? (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਤਾਂ) ਇਕ ਦੂਜੀ ਤੋਂ ਵਧੀਆ ਤੋਂ ਵਧੀਆ ਹਨ, ਮੇਰਾ ਤਾਂ ਉਥੇ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਮ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ।

ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਹੇਲੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਹ, ਮਾਨੋ, (ਚੁਮਾਸੇ ਵਿਚ) ਅੰਬਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ (ਠੰਢੀਆਂ) ਛਾਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਹਨ। ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਗੁਣ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ (ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਰੀਝਦਾ ਹੈ) ਮੈਂ (ਆਪਣੀ ਇਸ ਅਭਾਗਤਾ ਦਾ) ਦੋਸ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੇ ਸਕਦੀ ਹਾਂ ? ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ! (ਤੂੰ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈਂ) ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੇਹੜੇ ਕੇਹੜੇ ਗੁਣ ਵਿਸਥਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਦੱਸਾਂ ? ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੇਹੜਾ ਕੇਹੜਾ ਨਾਮ ਲਵਾਂ? (ਤੇਰੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ ਜੀਵ ਲੈ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ)।

ਤੇਰੇ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੇ ਹੋਏ ਕਿਸੇ ਇੱਕ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਭੀ (ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਲੇਖੇ ਤਕ) ਨਹੀਂ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਸਕਦੀ (ਬਸ!) ਮੈਂ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਹੀ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹਾਂ। (ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀਏ! ਵੇਖ ਮੇਰੀ ਅਭਾਗਤਾ!) ਸੋਨਾ, ਚਾਂਦੀ, ਮੋਤੀ ਤੇ ਹੀਰਾ ਆਦਿਕ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਪਦਾਰਥ- ਇਹ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ, ਮੈਂ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ) ਇਹਨਾਂ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾ ਲਿਆ।

ਮਿੱਟੀ ਪੱਥਰ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੇ ਬਣਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਘਰ-ਇਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਾਸ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਬਣਾ ਲਏ। ਮੈਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਫਸ ਕੇ) ਗ਼ਲਤੀ ਖਾ ਗਈ, (ਇਹ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ) ਉਸ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ ਮੈਂ ਨਾਹ ਬੈਠੀ। ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਗੁਣ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਪਰੇ ਚਲੇ ਜਾਣ, ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਨਿਰੇ ਪਖੰਡ ਹੀ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਣ, ਉਹ ਜਦੋਂ ਇਸ ਹਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਜਾਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ) ਕੀਹ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਖਾਵੇਗੀ ?

ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਦ ਵਿਚ ਗ਼ਾਫ਼ਿਲ ਪਏ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬੁਢੇਪਾ ਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤੇ ਤੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਖੁੰਝੀ ਹੋਈ ਹਾਂ। ਹੇ ਪਤੀ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵਿਛੁੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਨਿਰੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹੇੜੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ। ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਔਗੁਣ ਹੀ ਔਗੁਣ ਹਨ, ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ (ਤੇਰੇ ਹੀ ਦਰ ਤੇ) ਹੈ, ਕਿ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਤਾਂ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ* *ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਹਨ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਅਭਾਗਣ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਕੋਈ ਇਕ ਰਾਤ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ (ਮੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਭੀ ਕਦੇ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਕਰ) ॥੧॥
