English Translation

Vadhans Mahala - 3

( Man Mereya Tu Sada Sach Smaal Jiyo )
Oh, my mind! Remember the True Lord always (by reciting True Name) so that you may attain self-realization (you may abide within your inner self) and enjoy the bliss of life, having no fear of the Yama (god of death) who dares not to come anywhere near you. If the man were imbued with the love of the Lord then the god of death, Yama, with his (net) clutches of death, will not dare to approach you. (to cause your death). Then you will become purified, imbued with the love of the Lord, immersed in His worship, and enamored by the Lord, thus saving yourself from the cycle of births and deaths. The self-willed (faithless) persons are always lost in the wilderness due to their dual-mindedness and whims and are enamored by the (Yama) god of death, who is the cause of death. (of all). O Nanak! Let my mind listen to (one) this advice that we should always recite the Lord's True Name. (1)

Oh, my mind! The treasure of the Lord lies within your heart, then why are you trying to seek the Prime-soul outside? (in the jungles)? Instead, you should purify yourself by following the Guru's guidance (like a Guru-minded person) through the Grace of the Lord and enjoy the bliss and joy of life and accept with pleasure the Lord's Will (as it pleases Him) thus enjoying all the comforts of life. Oh, my mind! Try to adopt the attitude of the Guru-minded persons and get thrilled with the perception of the Lord's vision, as, within your inner self, the Lord's True Name exists like a friend extending (with) a helping hand always. However, the self-willed (faithless) persons are lost in dual-mindedness like a blind ignorant man without the support of a True Name. No one could ever escape worldly bondage without the support of the Lord's True Name and the whole world is bound in the chain) bondage of the god of death (Yama) leading a fruitless life.

O Nanak! Let us stop wandering in the jungles (outside) in search of the Lord as the treasure of 'True Naam' lies within our hearts, so we should face inwards (searching our soul) and enjoy the eternal bliss, without wandering around (aimlessly). (2)

Oh, my mind! The Guru-minded persons are seen dealing in the merchandise of True Name in this invaluable human life (having attained this life). They are engaged in the service of the True Guru, as they have inculcated the love of the Guru's Word in their hearts. Such Guru-minded persons are imbued with the love of the Guru's Word and they are in love with the Lord's True Name as such they have attained the wealth of the Lord's True Name, worth the nine worldly treasures of the Lord's worship. The self-willed persons, however, are engrossed in the greed of worldly falsehood, suffer through many afflictions and waste this precious life engrossed in dual-mindedness, and get dishonored. The Guru-minded persons. however, get acclaimed and honored by ridding themselves of their egoism by imbibing the love of the Lord through the Guru's guidance, and merging with the True Lord.

O Nanak! The Guru-minded persons have been blessed by the True Guru with this realization that human life is most precious and gained by us with great difficulties. (3)

Oh, my mind! The persons, who serve their True Guru with devotion, are really fortunate, and such persons, who keep their minds subdued and controlled, are truly detached from the world, leading a fruitful life. O, Lord! The persons, who are immersed in the Lord with a detached mind and attain self-realization, are enabled by the Guru's guidance to gain true wisdom, thus enjoying eternal bliss. They then give discourses on the True Name (effortlessly) in a state of equipoise. The self-willed persons, engrossed in the love of worldly falsehood (Maya) get attached to worldly pleasures more and more, thus they are sleeping in the slumber of ignorance.

O Nanak ! The Guru-minded persons, who serve the True Guru in peace and equanimity (equipoise), are considered as most fortunate and perfect, enjoying the bliss of life in unison with the Lord. (4-3)

Hindi Translation

वडहंस महला ३ ॥ ( Man Mereya Tu Sada Sach Smaal Jiyo )

हे मेरे मन ! तू सर्वदा ही सच्चे परमेश्वर को अपने अन्तर्मन में बसाकर रख। अपने हृदय-घर में इस तरह तू सुखपूर्वक निवास करेगा एवं यमदूत तुझे स्पर्श नहीं कर सकेगा। सच्चे शब्द में सुरति लगाने से मृत्यु रूपी जाल एवं यमदूत प्राणी को तंग नहीं कर सकते। सत्य-नाम में लीन हुआ मन हमेशा निर्मल है और जन्म-मरण के चक्र से मुक्त हो जाता है। मनमुख दुनिया द्वैतभाव एवं भ्रम में फँसकर नाश हो रही है और इसे यमदूत ने मोह लिया है। नानक का कथन है कि हे मेरे मन ! ध्यानपूर्वक सुन, तू सर्वदा सच्चे परमेश्वर की आराधना कर॥ १॥

हे मेरे मन ! तेरे भीतर परमात्मा के नाम का भण्डार है, इसलिए तू अनमोल वस्तु को बाहर मत खोज। जो कुछ प्रभु को अच्छा लगता है, उसे सहर्ष ग्रहण कर और गुरुमुख बनकर उसकी कृपा-दृष्टि से कृतार्थ हो जा। हे मेरे मन ! गुरुमुख बन और कृपादृष्टि से निहाल हो जा, क्योंकि तेरा सहायक हरि-नाम तेरे अन्तर्मन में ही है। मनमुख व्यक्ति मोह-माया में अन्धे एवं ज्ञानविहीन हैं और द्वैतभाव ने इन्हें नष्ट कर दिया है। परमात्मा के नाम के बिना किसी की भी मुक्ति नहीं होती; यमदूतों ने सारी दुनिया को जकड़ा हुआ है। नानक का कथन है कि तेरे भीतर परमात्मा के नाम का भण्डार है, इसलिए तू इस अनमोल वस्तु को बाहर मत खोज ॥ २॥

हे मेरे मन ! अमूल्य मनुष्य जन्म के पदार्थ को प्राप्त करके कुछ लोग सत्यनाम के व्यापार में क्रियाशील हैं। वे अपने सतिगुरु की सेवा करते हैं और उनके अन्तर में अपार शब्द विद्यमान है। उनके भीतर अपार शब्द है; हरि-परमेश्वर का नाम उन्हें प्यारा लगता है और नाम के फलस्वरूप वे नवनिधियाँ प्राप्त कर लेते हैं। मनमुख प्राणी तो माया के मोह में ही लीन हैं, उससे वे दु:खी होते हैं और दुविधा में फँसकर अपनी प्रतिष्ठा गंवा लेते हैं। जो अपने अहंकार को मार कर सच्चे शब्द में लीन होते हैं; वे अधिकतर सत्य में ही लीन रहते हैं। हे नानक ! यह मानव जन्म बड़ा दुर्लभ है और सतिगुरु ही इस भेद को समझाता है॥ ३॥

हे मेरे मन ! वे लोग बड़े खुशकिस्मत हैं, जो अपने सतिगुरु की श्रद्धापूर्वक सेवा करते हैं। जो अपने मन को वश में कर लेता है, वही पुरुष वास्तव में बैरागी है। जो सच्चे परमेश्वर के साथ सुरति लगाते हैं, वही विरक्त हैं और वे अपने आत्मस्वरूप को पहचान लेते हैं। उनकी बुद्धि बड़ी अटल एवं अत्यंत गहरी है और गुरुमुख बनकर वे सहजता से परमात्मा के नाम की स्तुति करते हैं। कुछ लोग सुन्दर नारियों से प्रेम करते हैं एवं माया का मोह उन्हें मीठा लगता है, ऐसे बदकिस्मत मनमुख अज्ञानता की निद्रा में सोये रहते हैं। हे नानक ! जो सहज-स्वभाव ही अपने गुरु की सेवा करते हैं, वे पूर्ण भाग्यशाली हैं।॥ ४॥ ३॥

Punjabi Translation

ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ( Man Mereya Tu Sada Sach Smaal Jiyo )  ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖ, (ਇਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਾਲ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹੇਂਗਾ, ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕੇਗੀ।

ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ, ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੌਤ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ) ਉਸ ਵਲ ਤੱਕ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਪਰ, ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਾ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ-ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਮੇਰੀ ਗੱਲ) ਸੁਣ, ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖ।੧।

ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ) ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਇਸ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਹਰ (ਜੰਗਲ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਨਾਹ ਢੂੰਢਦਾ ਫਿਰ। ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ ਬਣਾ, ਤੇ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖ। ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖ, ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ-ਮਿੱਤਰ (ਲੱਭ ਪਏਗਾ) । ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ, ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਖ਼ੁਆਰੀ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ-) ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਨੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ) ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ (ਇਸ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ। (ਹੇ ਮਨ!) ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ-ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਇਸ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਹਰ (ਜੰਗਲ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਨਾਹ ਢੂੰਢਦਾ ਫਿਰ।੨।

ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਕਈ (ਵਡ-ਭਾਗੀ ਐਸੇ) ਹਨ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਇਹ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਵਪਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ, ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਸਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ (ਮਾਨੋ, ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ) ਨੌ ਹੀ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਲੱਭ ਲਏ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਪਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਦੁੱਖ ਵਿਚ (ਗ੍ਰਸੇ ਹੋਏ) ਵਿਆਕੁਲ ਹੋਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਲਈ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਬੜੀ ਔਖਿਆਈ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ) ਬਹੁਤ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।੩।

ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬੜੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੇਹੜੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਤ-ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਭੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ) ਨਿਰਮੋਹ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਲੋਂ ਵਿਰਕਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੁੜੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ (ਸਦਾ) ਪੜਤਾਲਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ) ਅਡੋਲ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਗੂੜ੍ਹੀ ਰੰਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

(ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਮਨ!) ਕਈ ਐਸੇ ਬਦ-ਨਸੀਬ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ (ਕਾਮ-ਵੱਸ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨਾਲ (ਹੀ) ਹਿਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ (ਗ਼ਫ਼ਲਤ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਦ ਵਿਚ) ਸੁੱਤੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ-) ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।੪।੩।
