English Translation

Ik Onkar Satnam Karta Purkh Nirbhou Nirvair Akal Moorat Ajooni Saibhung Gurprasad.

( Je Man Chit Aas Rakheh Har Ooper )

"By The Grace of the one Lord-Sublime, Truth personified the creator (Prime-male) fearless, with enmity to none, deathless, free from the cycle of rebirths, self-effulgent, & attainable through the Guru's guidance."

Oh, my mind! If you were to depend on the support of the one Lord-sublime (having the hopes linked to one Lord only) only, you will get all your desires (many of your hopes) of your heart fulfilled. The True Master knows all the inner feelings and thoughts of the beings, nurtured by them. He never discards any acts of service rendered by the individual but bestows the fruits of their labor on various individuals through His Grace. Oh, my mind! You should always rest your hopes on the Lord only, who is pervading everywhere. (1)

Oh, my mind! Let us always take the support of the True Master of the whole world and depend on His support only with full faith in Him. If you depend on someone else's support (some other powers), your hopes will be dashed to the ground, making this life a total loss. (a complete failure), (Pause-1)

The persons, who are engrossed in the love of the Maya' (worldly falsehood) and depend on the support of the family members, in fact, waste this human life, being dependent on such useless human approval. But these relations cannot be of any help as nothing is in their control (hands) and whatever they do will be fruitless. Oh, my mind! Let us take the support of one beloved Lord only who will bless us with salvation and enable all others to cross this ocean (of life) successfully. (2)

O, Man! If you were to pin your hopes on some other (relative) power except the Lord, (on Maya or gods and goddesses) you must bear in your mind that their support will be of no avail to you. In fact, all this support of Maya (or other friends) amounts to dual-mindedness and is all false and temporary, which will vanish in a moment. (so you should discard all other hopes and support). Oh, my mind! Let us always take the support (depend on) of the beloved Lord only, who always values and accepts all our efforts (as noble deeds), giving us full reward. (3)

Oh, my True Master! Only Your support will be useful, as the individual is engaged in all those hopes and desires which You direct him to follow as per Your Will. Oh my Lord! The Guru has made me realize the fact that nothing is in the hands of this human being. O Nanak! The Lord alone knows all my hopes and desires. By having a glimpse of the Lord (His vision) I have been fully satiated without any further desires (of other gods), as the Lord is my only support. (4 - 1)

Poetic Translation

There is but One God.
Truth Incarnate,
The Master Creator,
Unafraid,
Disdains none.
The Image Eternal.
Beyond Incarnation,
Self-existent, True.
Realized through the grace of the Guru.

Should you have faith in the Lord with your mind and heart,
You will gain all your cherished desires.
The Lord knows all that goes on in the mind,
No one's effort of a sesame worth goes unnoticed by the Kind.
Man! you should expect your desires to be fulfilled by one,
The Master who in everyone you find. (1)

My self! it would help if you have faith in Jagdish Gosain.
He who reposes faith in anyone else
He is destined to be dejected and pine. (1) Refrain

Maya, its attachment, and the tribe that you see around,
Don't you waste your life in their assurances of any kind?
What can the poor do?
There is nothing in their power,
Their efforts with any force can never shine.
Man! you should repose faith in the Beloved Lord
Who ferries you and your people at a time. (2)

Should you repose faith in old friends,
Don't you think they would provide aid at any time?
Reposing faith in others is a reflection of duality,
In an instant, it vanishes without any reason, without any rhyme.
Man! you should have faith in the Beloved Lord,
So that your efforts bear fruit in time. (3)

All our hopes and desires lie in You, my Master!
The dream you inspire my mind does chime.
That there is nothing in anyone's control, my Master!
It has been revealed to me by my Guru Divine.
Of the desire of Nanak, the humble, you are aware,
I'll be duly satisfied with a glimpse of Your sight sublime. (4) 1

Hindi Translation

ओंकार एक है, उसका नाम सत्य है, वही संसार का रचयिता है, सर्वशक्तिमान है, उसे किसी से कोई भय नहीं है, वह वैर भावना से रहित है, वह कालातीत ब्रह्म-मूर्ति सदा शाश्वत है, वह जन्म-मरण से रहित है, वह स्वयं ही प्रकाशमान हुआ है, जिसे गुरु-कृपा से पाया जा सकता है। राग गोंड चउपदे महला ४ घर १ ॥

हे जीव ! यदि मन में भगवान् पर आशा रखोगे तो अनेकों ही मनोवांछित फलों की प्राप्ति हो जाएगी। जो तेरे दिल में है, परमात्मा सबकुछ जानता है। प्रभु इतना दयालु है कि वह किसी की मेहनत को तिल भर भी व्यर्थ नहीं होने देता। हे मेरे मन ! उस ईश्वर पर आशा रखो, जो सबमें समा रहा है॥ १॥

हे मेरे मन ! ईश्वर की ही आशा करो, जो व्यक्ति प्रभु के अलावा किसी अन्य पर आशा करता है, उसकी वह आशा निषफल है और वह सारी व्यर्थ हो जाती है॥ १॥ रहाउ ।

यह जो सारा परिवार नजर आता है, यह माया का मोह है, इस परिवार की आशा में लगकर अपना जन्म मत गंवाना। परिवार के इन सदस्यों के वश में कुछ भी नहीं है, ये बेचारे कुछ नहीं कर सकते। इनके करने से कुछ नहीं होता और इनका कुछ वश नहीं चलता। हे मेरे मन ! अपने प्यारे प्रभु की आशा करो, जो तुझे भवसागर से पार कर देगा और तेरे पूरे परिवार को भी यम से छुड़ा देगा॥ २॥

यदि तू अपने किसी पराए मित्र की आशा करता है तो यह मत समझ लेना कि यह तेरे कहीं काम आएगी। पराए मित्र की आशा तो द्वैतभाव है, जो झूठी होने के कारण क्षण में नाश हो जाती है। हे मेरे मन ! अपने सच्चे प्रियतम प्रभु की आशा करो, जो तेरी सारी मेहनत को साकार कर देता है॥ ३॥

हे मेरे स्वामी ! यह आशा एवं अभिलाषा सब तेरी ही हैं, तू जैसी आशा करवाता है, वैसी ही कोई आशा करता है। मेरे सतगुरु ने मुझे यही सूझ दी है कि किसी भी जीव के हाथ में कुछ भी नहीं है। हे हरि ! नानक की आशा तू ही जानता है और तेरे दर्शन करके मैं तृप्त हो जाता हूँ॥ ४॥ १॥

ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਸਾਈਂ ਦੀ (ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਦੀ) ਆਸ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰ। ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੇਹੜੀ ਭੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਕਰੀਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਸ ਸਫਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਉਹ ਆਸ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।

[ Je Man Chit Aas Rakhe Har Uper ] ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਉਤੇ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਰੱਖੇਂ, ਤਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਮਨ-ਮੰਗੇ ਫਲ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਏਂਗਾ, (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਉਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ (ਅਸਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਮੇਹਨਤ ਰਤਾ ਭਰ ਭੀ ਅਜਾਈਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣ ਦੇਂਦਾ। ਸੋ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਉਸ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਦਾ ਆਸ ਰੱਖ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ।੧।

ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਜੋ ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਦਿੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ (ਦਾ ਮੂਲ) ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ ਕਿਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਨਾਹ ਗਵਾ ਲਈਂ। ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸੰਬੰਧੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਵਿਚ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ। ਇਹ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ ਕੀਹ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ? ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਲਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਸਫਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ। ਸੋ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਆਸ ਰੱਖ, ਉਹੀ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰੇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ (ਹਰੇਕ ਬਿਪਤਾ ਤੋਂ) ਛੁਡਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।੨।
