Deewali Di Raat Lyrics Meaning

Departing Ways

1. People light up earthenware oil lamps on the night of Diwāli.
2. Big and small stars shine in the sky at night but are not to be seen during the day.
3. Flowers bloom in the orchards and look fascinating Very soon these are selectively plucked leaving the plants bare of their beauty.
4. Groups of pilgrims are seen going to holy places. Soon after reaching there and in no time they all disperse. All these places are left bereft of usual gaiety. 5. Mirages of habitats are seen surfacing and vanishing. Similarly, this world is of short-lived pleasure and happiness.
6. Gurmukhs are blessed with spiritual comfort, peace, and bliss through constant engrossment in Gurshabad (6)

In Essence

Gurmukhs consider the pleasure of this world as a short-term vacation just as the beauty of Diwali night fades away as soon as the oil lamps go off, or the flowers from the orchards are plucked. The star-studded night has beauty till the daybreak. Thus Gurmukhs remain detached from the world knowing that their stay here is of short duration. During this time, they remain engrossed in the meditation of Gurü's word. Gurbāni says:
ਗਉੜੀ ਪੰਚਪਦਾ ॥ ਪੇਵਕੜੈ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰਿ ਹੈ ਸਾਹੁਰੜੈ ਜਾਣਾ ॥ ਅੰਧਾ ਲੋਕੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਏਆਣਾ ॥੧॥(SGGS, p. 333)
O naive maid, your stay in your parental place is only for four days. Very soon, you will have to go to your in-law's place. Don't be ignorant or blind to this fact.

ਦੀਵਾਲੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਤਿ ਦੀਵੇ ਬਾਲੀਅਨਿ ॥
ਤਾਰੇ ਜਾਤਿ ਸਨਾਤਿ ਅੰਬਰਿ ਭਾਲੀਅਨਿ ॥
ਫੁਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਾਗਾਤਿ ਚੁਣਿ ਚੁਣਿ ਚਾਲੀਅਨਿ ॥
ਤੀਰਥਿ ਜਾਤੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਨੈਣ ਨਿਹਾਲੀਅਨਿ ॥
ਹਰਿਚੰਦਉਰੀ ਝਾਤਿ ਵਸਾਇ ਉਚਾਲੀਅਨਿ ॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲ ਦਾਤਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮ੍ਹਾਲੀਅਨਿ ॥੬॥

ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਦੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਜੁਗਤ

੧. ਦੀਵਾਲੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ) ਦੀਵੇ ਬਾਲੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਚਿਰ ਮਗਰੋਂ ਬੁਝ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ) ।
੨. (ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਰਾਤ ਵੇਲੇ) ਵੱਡੇ ਛੋਟੇ ਤਾਰੇ ਅਸਮਾਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਕਲ ਕੇ ਚਮਕਾਂ ਮਾਰਦੇ ਤੇ ਲਿਸ਼ਕਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਦਿਨ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹੀ ਖਤਮ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ)।
੩. ਬਾਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ-ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਫੁੱਲ ਖਿੜਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਪਰ ਕੁਝ ਚਿਰ ਹੀ ਪੂਰੇ ਖਿੜਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਮਾਲੀ) ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚੁਣ-ਚੁਣ ਕੇ ਤੋੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
੪. ਯਾਤਰੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਟੋਲੇ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਪੁਰ ਯਾਤਰਾ ਕਰਨ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਦੇਖਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਮੁੜ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਖਾਲੀ ਕਰ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ)।
੫. ਹਰਿਚੰਦਉਰੀ ਵਾਂਗ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਅਜਿਹੀਆਂ ਨਗਰੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਝਾਤੀ (ਦਿਖਾਵੇ ਮਾਤਰ) ਦਿਸਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਖਤਮ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਵਸਦੀ ਤੇ ਉਜੜ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
੬. (ਪਰ ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚ) ਜੋ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸੁਖ ਫਲ, ਜੋ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੇ ਭਜਨ) ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਵਰੋਸਾਏ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਹੀ ਸੰਭਾਲਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੬॥

दीवाली की रात में दीपक जलाये जाते हैं; छोटे-मोटे तारागण आकाश में दिखाई देते हैं; बागों में फूल भी होते हैं जिन्हें चुन-चुनकर तोड़ लिया जाता है; तीर्थों पर जाते हुए यात्रियों को भी आँखों से देखा जाता है और काल्पनिक नगरों को भ्रम में ही बसते और लुप्त होते भी देखा जाता है । ये सब क्षणिक हैं परन्तु गुरुमुखों का सुखफल रूपी प्राप्त दान शब्द के माध्यम से सँभाला जाता है और रखा जाता है ।। ६ ।।
