ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ

English Translation

Bilawal Mahala - 5 ( Prabh Janam Maran Nivaar )
O, Lord! May You relieve me of all the afflictions and sufferings of the cycle of births and deaths as I have taken shelter at Your lotus feet, having tired me out with other efforts! O, Lord! Now I have sought Your support by joining the company of the holy saints. O, True Master! I have been enamored with Your True Name's sweet and loving nectar in my heart). Now I would solicit You to merge me with Yourself through Your Grace. O Nanak! May the Lord bestow His Grace on me so that I could recite Your True Name all the time! (1)

O True Master of the helpless (and poor) people! O Lordbenefactor! I am only seeking the dust of the lotus feet of Your holy saints. (Pause-1)

O, Lord! This world is like a well of vices and sinful actions, as such, I have sought refuge at Your lotus feet completely worn out (with my efforts). O, True Master! I am engrossed and laboring in the utter darkness of ignorance, and my only prayer to You is to protect me now by giving Your helping hand in this darkness and bless me with Your True Name. O, Lord! Without Your True Name, I do not find any other support. O Nanak! I would sacrifice myself to the Lord. (2)

ਲੋਭਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਾਧੀ ਦੇਹ

This body of ours is engrossed in the vices of greed and worldly attachment and this body is finally reduced to dust without the support of the Lord's worship. The Yama (god of death) is very frightening and (the assistants of Dharam Raj) Chitra & Gupt are watching all our actions and keeping account). O Nanak! Chitra & Gupt (the assistants) relate the account as witnesses of our actions day and night. O, True Master! We have now sought Your support. (3)

O Lord, Killer of the demon Mur and Destroyer of the fear complex! May You bestow Your Grace on this sinner and bless me with Your Protection! O, True Master! My failings and defects are beyond any count. Where do we go with our complaints except to You, as no one else cares for us? O, True Master! I always recite True Name with Your support only. O Nanak! May the Lord protect us by giving us His helping hand! (4)

O, True Master! You are the fountainhead of all the worldly treasures and are sustaining all the beings. My heart is always pining for getting a glimpse of Your Vision. O, Lord! May You fulfill all our hopes and desires! O Nanak! I cannot live (feel alive) for a moment even without the support of the Lord. But it is only a few fortunate ones, pre-destined by the Lord's Will, who have attained You. (5)

O, True Master! There is none else as dear to me as Yourself just as Chakor (bird) has developed the love for the moon, or the fish has got the love for the water, or the black wasp has no separate and distinct existence except with the lotus-flower, having developed love for it. Similarly, the Chakor (bird) always hopes for a glimpse of the sun. O Nanak! We are always longing (having the thirst) for the lotus feet of the Lord. (6)

ਜਿਉ ਤਰੁਨਿ ਭਰਤ ਪਰਾਨ

Just as the wife has developed extreme love (loves her spouse more than her life) for her spouse or a greedy person develops a passion for wealth. Similarly, milk has inculcated a passion for water or a hungry person craves food and a mother develops unending love for her child (son). O Nanak! I always recite the Lord's True Name, having developed a similar extreme passion for the Lord. (7)

The wasp has developed so much love for the lamp that it destroys itself in its love or a thief longs for claiming someone else's possessions and wealth without any hesitation. Similarly, the male elephant, seeing a paper female elephant, gets caught in a pit due to his sexual desires and suffers from his bondage or a householder remains engrossed in the love of vicious and sinful actions. Just as a gambler does not leave his habit of gambling (and is always dying for a gambler's game) O Nanak! I have developed a similar craze and love for the Lord in my heart. (8)

ਕੁਰੰਕ ਨਾਦੈ ਨੇਹੁ

Just as a deer has developed a love for the hunter's drum (and gets caught in his craze) or the Papiya (toad) longs with love for a raindrop. Similarly, the devotees (slaves) have developed a love for the company of the holy saints. O Lord-Gobind! The saints are always immersed in Your worship, having developed extreme love for You. O Nanak! We are always singing the praises (by reciting the True Name) of the Lord with our tongues. True Master! May You bless me with the boon of perceiving Your glimpse with my eyes. (9)

The person, who sings or listens to the praises of the Lord or writes about the Lord's Greatness (for others), attains all the four treasures of duty, wealth, pleasures, and salvation, thus he helps all his family members (clan) towards attaining salvation and crosses this ocean of life successfully. Then the person gains the support of the lotus feet of the Lord as a ship of safety, who sings the praises of the Lord in the company of the holy saints. O Nanak! The True Master, the destroyer of the demon of egoism, permanently protects the honor of His holy saints. I have thus taken (refuge in) the support of the company of) holy saints of the Lord. (To unite with Him). (10-2)

Prabh Janam Maran Nivaar Hindi Translation

बिलावल महला ५ ॥ ( Prabh Janam Maran Nivaar ) हे प्रभु ! मेरा जन्म-मरण मिटा दो, मैं हार कर तेरे द्वार पर आ गया हूँ। मैं साधु के चरण पकड़ कर उसके साथ ही रहता हूँ और मन को हरि-रंग ही मीठा लगता है।
नानक विनती करता है कि हे प्रभु ! दया करके मुझे अपने साथ मिला लो, मैं तो नाम का ही ध्यान करता रहता हूँ॥ १॥ हे मेरे स्वामी ! तू दीनानाथ एवं बड़ा दयालु है और मैं संतों की चरण-धूलि की ही कामना करता हूँ॥ १॥ रहाउ॥

यह संसार माया रूपी विष का कुआं है, जिसमें अज्ञान एवं मोह का घोर अंधेरा है। हे प्रभु जी ! मेरी बाँह पकड़ कर मुझे बचा लो और अपना नाम दे दीजिए। तेरे अतिरिक्त मेरा कोई ठिकाना नहीं। नानक तुझ पर बारंबार कुर्बान जाता है॥ २॥

लोभ मोहे बाधी देह

लोभ मोह ने मेरे शरीर को बांध लिया है और प्रभु-भजन बिना यह मिट्टी हो जाता है। यमदूत बहुत भयानक हैं और चित्रगुप्त मेरे किए कर्मों को जानता है और वह साक्षी बनकर दिन-रात मेरे किए कर्मों को यमराज की कचहरी में सुनाता है। हे नानक ! मैं हरि की शरण में आ गया हूँ॥ ३॥

हे भयभंजन मुरारि ! दया करके मुझ पतित का उद्धार कर दो। मेरे दोष गिने नहीं जा सकते, तेरे बिना यह पाप अन्य कहाँ समा सकते हैं। नानक की प्रार्थना है कि हे नाथ ! मैंने तेरा सहारा लेने के बारे में सोचा है, अतः अपना हाथ देकर मेरी रक्षा करो।॥ ४॥

हे गुणनिधि प्रभु ! तू सारे जगत् का प्रतिपालक है। मेरे मन में तेरा ही प्रेम बना हुआ है और तेरे दर्शन की तीव्र लालसा है। हे गोविंद ! मेरी अभिलाषा पूरी करो, तेरे बिना मुझसे एक क्षण भर भी रहा नहीं जाता। हे नानक ! भाग्यशाली को ही उसकी प्राप्ति होती है।॥ ५॥

हे प्रभु ! तेरे बिना मेरा अन्य कोई नहीं है, मेरे मन में तेरे लिए ऐसा प्रेम बना हुआ है, जैसे चाँद के साथ चकोर का है, जैसे मछली को जल से है, जैसे भेंवरे का कमल के साथ कोई अन्तर नहीं है और जैसे चकवी को सूर्योदय की उम्मीद लगी रहती है, वैसे ही नानक को तेरे चरणों की प्यास लगी रहती है।॥ ६॥!

ज्यों तरुन भरत परान

जैसे नवयुवती का पति उसके प्राण है, जैसे लालची आदमी को धन लेकर बड़ी खुशी होती है, जैसे दूध का जल से संयोग होता है, जैसे भूखे व्यक्ति को भोजन प्रिय होता है, जैसे माता का अपने पुत्र से स्नेह होता है, हे नानक ! वैसे ही नित्य भगवान् का सिमरन करना चाहिए॥ ७ ॥

जैसे पतंगा दीए पर गिरता है, जैसे चोर निस्संकोच होकर चोरी करता है, जैसे हाथी का कामवासना से संबंध है, जैसे विकारों का धंधा विकारी आदमी को वश में किए रखता है, जैसे जुआरी की जुआ खेलने की बुरी आदत नहीं जाती वैसे ही तू अपना मन परमात्मा के साथ लगाकर रख॥ ८ ॥

जैसे हिरण का नाद से प्यार होता है, जैसे पपीहा वर्षा की अभिलाषा करता है, वैसे ही भक्तजनों का जीवन सत्संग से बना होता है और वे प्रेमपूर्वक गोविंद का भजन करते रहते हैं। वे अपनी जीभ से प्रभु नाम का ही बखान करते हैं। हे नानक ! वे तो भगवान् के दर्शनों का ही दान मॉगते हैं।९ ॥

जो व्यक्ति भगवान् का गुणगान करता, सुनता, लिखता एवं दूसरों को भी यह गुण देता है, उसे सभी फल प्राप्त हो जाते हैं। वह अपने समूचे वंश का उद्धार कर देता है और स्वयं भी संसार-सागर से पार हो जाता है। हरि के चरण उसका जहाज है और संतों के साथ मिलकर परमेश्वर का यश गाता रहता है। ईश्वर उसकी लाज रखता है, इसलिए नानक भी हरि के द्वार पर उसकी शरण में आ गया है॥ १० ॥ २ ॥

ਹੇ ਗ਼ਰੀਬਾਂ ਦੇ ਖਸਮ! ( Prabh Janam Maran Nivaar ) ਹੇ ਦਇਆ ਦੇ ਸੋਮੇ! ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥ! ਹੇ ਦਇਆਲ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਕਰ (ਅਤੇ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ-) ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੇਰਾ) ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ (ਦਾ ਗੇੜ) ਮੁਕਾ ਦੇਹ, ਮੈਂ (ਹੋਰ ਪਾਸਿਆਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਆਸ ਲਾਹ ਕੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਆ ਡਿੱਗਾ ਹਾਂ। (ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ) ਤੇਰੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ ਫੜ ਕੇ (ਤੇਰੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦਾ) ਪੱਲਾ ਫੜ ਕੇ, ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ, ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਤੇਰਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਰਹੇ। ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਲੜ ਨਾਲ ਲਾ ਲੈ।੧।

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰ, ਤੇ, ਆਖ-) ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ (ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ) ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਆਸਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼। ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਦਾ ਖੂਹ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਦਾ ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਮੋਹ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। (ਮੇਰੀ) ਬਾਂਹ ਫੜ ਕੇ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਬਚਾ ਲੈ।੨।...
