1. English Translation

Sorath Mahala Pehla Choutuke ( Maie Baap Ko Beta Nika, Sasurai Chatur Jawai )

Someone, who was the dutiful and beautiful son of his parents, a clever and wise son-in-law of his in-laws, or a darling brother of his brothers, finally faces death (one day) as per the Lord's Will. He was taken away soon to the cremation ground leaving all the amassed wealth, which he had considered his own, now belonging to someone else in a moment (after death). This faithless person had neither recited True Name, nor visited holy places of pilgrimage for taking bath, nor had given alms to the poor, without having performed any virtuous deeds, now lies in dust and the once beautiful body mingles with dust. (1)

My mind has realized the value and efficacy of the Lord's True Name and I have started reciting it, which would be helpful here and hereafter (in this world and the next). I have offered myself as a sacrifice to the Guru, having fallen at His lotus feet, who has blessed me with the right guidance and teachings (to recite True Name). (Pause)

The self-willed persons, due to their love for worldly falsehood, have engrossed their minds in worldly pleasures and are always involved in wrangles against the holy saints as such the faithless person is always interested in finding ways and means to earn more money (during the day and night) all the time. He never engages himself in the recitation of True Name and finally dies engrossed in the poison of vicious and sinful actions. Such a person is always involved in the love of crude and impolite language, thus wasting his time in fruitless talk, without appreciating and understanding the Gurus' Word (Message). Such a faithless person gets dishonored due to his sinful actions, without enjoying the bliss of the Lord's love or True Name, and never engages himself in singing the praises of the Lord either. (2)

He has never partaken the nectar of True Name and light of knowledge in the company of holy saints, thus his speech is crude and unpleasant. He considers his body, mind, and wealth as his own, and not a blessing of the Lord, as such he is not aware of the Lord's Abode or Presence. O, Brother! When he treads the darkened path of Yama, due to lack of knowledge, he does not see anything clearly including the Lord's Presence (or door), and is brought in chains at the gates of the Yama and is not offered a good seat either in the Lord's court, as he reaps the reward of his actions. (3)

If such a self-willed (faithless) person is blessed with the Grace of the Lord, then only I may see with my own eyes His beauty or wisdom, as nothing else could be stated. Then such a person listens to the Guru's message with his ears and sings the praises of the Lord thus teaching the love of the nectar of True Name in his heart. O Nanak! The Lord, who is formless, fearless, with hostility to none, is perceived as present in all beings, but our doubts and whimsical beliefs cannot be eliminated without the Guru's guidance. Through the Grace of the Guru, we get the boon of reciting True Name, thus getting the chance of partaking in the nectar of True Name by ridding ourselves of dual-mindedness. (4-3)

ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਦੇ ਮਾਪਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਸੀ, ਕਦੇ ਸਹੁਰੇ ਦਾ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਜਵਾਈ ਸੀ, ਕਦੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਧੀ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪਿਉ ਸੀ, ਅਤੇ ਭਰਾ ਦਾ ਬੜਾ (ਸਨੇਹੀ) ਭਰਾ ਸੀ, ਜਦੋਂ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਹੋਇਆ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਘਰ ਬਾਰ (ਸਭ ਕੁਝ) ਛੱਡ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਇਕ ਪਲਕ ਵਿਚ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਓਪਰਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ। ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਹੀ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੇ ਨਾਹ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ ਨਾਹ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਆਚਰਨ ਬਣਾਇਆ। ਇਸ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਖੇਹ-ਖ਼ੁਆਰੀ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ।੧।

ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਪਤੀਜਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਅਸਲ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸੱਚੀ ਮਤਿ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਅਸਲ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ) ।੧।

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਜਗਤ ਨਾਲ ਝੂਠੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਝਗੜਾ ਖੜਾ ਕਰੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਉਹ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਰਾਹ ਹੀ ਤੱਕਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ) ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਖਾ ਖਾ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੰਦੇ ਗੀਤਾਂ (ਗਾਵਣ ਸੁਣਨ) ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੰਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਹਿਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਾਲੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦੀ। ਨਾਹ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀਜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨਾਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਖਿੱਚ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਮਨਮੁਖ ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੨।

ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਾਣਦਾ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਕਦੇ ਰਤਾ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ। ਮਨਮੁਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਤਨ ਨੂੰ ਧਨ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਮਝੀ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਦੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਬਰ-ਸੂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ। ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ (ਜੀਵਨ ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ) ਅੱਖਾਂ ਮੀਟ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਤੁਰਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਘਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਦਰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ। ਆਖ਼ਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਨਫ਼ਾ ਖੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਮਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਬੂਹੇ ਤੇ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ (ਚੋਟਾਂ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਲਈ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਦਾ।੩।

(ਪਰ ਅਸਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੀਹ ਵੱਸ?) ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ। (ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ) ਕੰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਸੁਣ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਮੈਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਤੇ ਅਟੱਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ।

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਹੈ ਨਿਰ-ਆਕਾਰ ਹੈ ਨਿਰਵੈਰ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਪੂਰਨ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਆਦਰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ (ਤੇ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕੀਦਾ) ।੪।੩।

सोरठि मः १ चौतुके ॥ माता-पिता को अपना बेटा एवं ससुर को अपना चतुर दामाद बहुत प्रिय है। बाल कन्या को अपना पिता बहुत प्यारा है तथा भाई को अपना भाई अच्छा लगता है। लेकिन परमात्मा का हुक्म होने पर (मृत्यु का निमंत्रण आने पर) प्राणी ने घर-बाहर हरेक को त्याग दिया और एक क्षण में ही सब कुछ पराया हो गया है। मनमुख मनुष्य ने भगवान के नाम का सिमरन नहीं किया, न ही दान-पुण्य किया है, न ही स्नान को महत्व दिया है, जिसके फलस्वरूप उसका शरीर धूल में ही फिरता रहता है अर्थात् नष्ट ही होता रहता है॥ १ ॥

मेरा मन भगवान के नाम को सहायक बनाकर सुखी हो गया है। मैं उस गुरु के चरण छूकर उन पर कुर्बान जाता हूँ, जिसने मुझे सच्ची सूझ-सुमति दी है॥ रहाउ ॥

मनमुख मनुष्य दुनिया के झूठे प्रेम से बंधा हुआ है और भक्तजनों के साथ वाद-विवाद में क्रियाशील रहता है। माया में मग्न हुआ वह दिन-रात्रि केवल माया का मार्ग ही देखता रहता है तथा भगवान का नाम नहीं लेता और माया रूपी विष खाकर प्राण त्याग देता है। वह अभद्र बातों में ही मस्त रहता है और हितकारी शब्द की ओर ध्यान नहीं लगाता। न ही वह भगवान के रंग में रंगा है, न ही वह नाम के रस से बिंधा गया है। इस तरह मनमुख अपनी इज्जत गंवा देता है। ॥ २ ॥

साधुओं की सभा में वह सहजावस्था को नहीं चखता और उसकी जिव्हा में कण-मात्र भी मधुरता नहीं। वह मन, तन एवं धन को अपना मानकर जानता है लेकिन भगवान के दरबार का उसे कोई ज्ञान नहीं। हे भाई! ऐसा मनुष्य अपनी आँखें बन्द करके अज्ञानता के अन्धेरे में चल देता है और उसे अपना घर द्वार दिखाई नहीं देता। मृत्यु के द्वार पर उस बंधे हुए मनुष्य को कोई ठिकाना नहीं मिलता और वह अपने किए हुए कर्मो का फल भोगता है।३॥

यद्यपि भगवान अपनी कृपा-दृष्टि करे तो ही मैं अपनी आँखों से उसके दर्शन कर सकता हूँ, जिसका कथन एवं वर्णन नहीं किया जा सकता। अपने कानों से मैं भगवान की महिमा सुन-सुनकर शब्द द्वारा उसकी स्तुति करता हूँ और उसका अमृत नाम मैंने अपने हृदय में बसाया है। निर्भीक, निराकार, निर्वेर प्रभु की पूर्ण ज्योति सारे जगत में समाई हुई है। हे नानक ! गुरु के बिना मन का भ्रम दूर नहीं होता और सत्य-नाम से ही प्रशंसा प्राप्त होती है।॥४॥३॥
