कल कलवाली काम मद, मनुआ पीवनहार; प्रस्तुत मुख-वाक्य साहिब श्री गुरु नानक साहिब जी की रसना से उच्चरित श्री गुरु ग्रंथ साहिब के पन्ना 553 पर राग बिहागड़ा में दर्ज है।

English Translation

Slok Mardana - 1 ( Kal Kalwali Kaam Mad Manua Pivanhar )

O, Brother! In this age of Kal Yug, our evil deeds constitute the mud, the interest in sexual desires is the wine and the distracted mind is the individual taking wine. Anger could be compared to the mug or glass, and the wine is contained in the vessel of worldly attachments, while egoism is like the individual who offers wine.
Then such a person is engrossed in the company of falsehood and greed; where one suffers disrespect due to excessive drinking.

As opposed to it, even good actions could form the mud (Earth), speaking Truth is like adding solid sugar (Gur), and then the wine would consist of caring for the Lord's True Name.
Then for a Guru-minded drunkard, virtuous deeds are like the ghee to be added, and then feeling shy of one's actions is like meat-eating.
O Nanak! The Guru-minded persons partake of this kind of wine and meat, which could dispel all vices and sins. (1)

Mardana - 1

This body is like Earth, egoism is the wine, and the chasing of worldly acquisitions is the company of drunkards.
The Cup consists of worldly desires, the vessel is full of falsehood and the Yama encourages one to drink wine.

O Nanak! This type of wine generates vicious thoughts, whereas the real type of wine should be like this:
The enlightenment due to the Lord's knowledge constitutes the solid sugar, the praises of the Lord forms the small eats, and meat-eating would consist of developing wonder-awe of the Lord.
O Nanak! A man should partake of the food of the Lord's True Name forming the mainstay in life. (2)

This body is the Earth, the egoism is the wine, speaking a sweet language would amount to the nectar of True Name, flowing in a stream and the cup is full of the True Name in the form of uniting with the company of holy saints, and getting imbued with the love of the Lord, and drinking this wine would cut down all vicious thoughts. (3)

Pouri

The Lord Himself is the god, man, and the Shiva, Vishnu, or Mahesh gods and then take discourses on the Lord's limitless greatness in the form of a Guru-minded person. In fact, the Lord Himself is the Yogi, and Himself the householder enjoying all the worldly pleasures and then roams around the jungles as a recluse. The Lord is everything, He discusses the Lord with Himself, then gives directions to people on conducting themselves, and then He Himself is the person with a beautiful and charming personality, possessing intelligence, He Himself watches the fun of His worldly drama and knows everything about everyone, being omniscient. (12)

ਕਲਜੁਗੀ ਸੁਭਾਉ (ਮਾਨੋ) (ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਕੱਢਣ ਵਾਲੀ) ਮੱਟੀ ਹੈ; ਕਾਮ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੀਣ ਵਾਲਾ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ) ਮਨ ਹੈ, ਮੋਹ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੀ ਹੋਈ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਦੀ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਕਟੋਰੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਪਿਲਾਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਕੂੜੇ ਲੱਬ ਦੀ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਮਜਲਸ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਬਹਿ ਕੇ) ਮਨ (ਕਾਮ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਨੂੰ) ਪੀ ਪੀ ਕੇ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਚੰਗੀ ਕਰਣੀ ਨੂੰ (ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਕੱਢਣ ਵਾਲੀ) ਲਾਹਣ, ਸੱਚ ਬੋਲਣ ਨੂੰ ਗੁੜ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਬਣਾ। ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਡੇ, ਸੀਤਲ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਨੂੰ ਘਿਉ ਤੇ ਸ਼ਰਮ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਸ-(ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ) ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ ਬਣਾ; ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਹ ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋਇਆਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਖਾਧਿਆਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।੧।

श्लोक मरदाना १॥

यह कलियुग कामवासना की शराब से भरा हुआ शराबखाना है, जिसे मन पीता रहता है। क्रोध के बर्तन में मोह को भर करके बैठे हैं जिसे अहंकार रूपी पिलावा इसे परोस रहा है।
झूठे लोभ की महफिल में कामवासना की शराब पी-पीकर जीव अपना जीवन बर्बाद कर रहा है।
इसलिए हे जीव ! शुम कर्मों को अपना बर्तन बना और सच नामे गुड़ डाल कर, इससे तू सत्यनाम की श्रेष्ठ शराब बना। गुणों को अपनी रोटी, शीलता को अपना घी तथा लज्जा को खाने हेतु अपना मांसाहार बना। हे नानक ! ऐसा भोजन गुरुमुख बनने से ही प्राप्त होता है, जिसे खाने से सभी पाप-विकार मिट जाते हैं॥ १॥

मरदाना १ ॥

मनुष्य का तन एक घड़ा है, अहंत्व मदिरा है और तृष्णा की एक महफिल है।
मन के मनोरथों - वासनाओ को कटोरी झूठ से भरपूर है और यमदूत कटोरी पिलाने वाला है।
हे नानक ! इस मदिरा को पीने से जीव अत्याधिक पाप-विकार कमा लेता है।
ब्रह्म-ज्ञान को अपना गुड़, प्रभु-भजन को अपनी रोटी तथा प्रभु-भय को खाने के लिए अपना मांसाहार बना।

हे नानक ! यह भोजन ही सत्य है, जिससे सत्यनाम ही मनुष्य के जीवन का आधार बनता है॥ २ ॥
यदि यह शरीर घड़ा हो, आत्म-ज्ञान की मदिरा हो तो नामामृत उसकी धारा बन जाती है।
यदि सत्संगति से मिलाप हो, प्रभु में सुरति की कटोरी जो नामामृत से भरी हुई है, उसे पी-पीकर पाप-विकार मिट जाते हैं । 3।

पउड़ी।

परमात्मा स्वयं ही देवता, मानव, गण तथा गंधर्व है और स्वयं ही षड्दर्शन की बड़ी है।
वह स्वयं ही शिवशंकर महेश है और स्वयं ही गुरमुख बनकर अकथनीय कहानी वर्णन करता है
वह स्वयं योगी स्वयं ही भोगी तथा स्वयं ही सन्यासी बनकर वनो में भ्रमण करता है।
परमात्मा अपने साथ ही ज्ञान-गोष्ठी करता है, स्वय ही उपदेश देता रहता है और स्वयं ही सुघड़ सुन्दर स्वरूप एवं विद्वान है। वह स्वयं ही अपनी जगत लीला रचकर स्वयं ही देखता रहता है और स्वयं ही सभी जीवों का ज्ञाता है। १२।
