Mukhwak: Jekar Sutak Maniye Sabh Te Sutak Hoye; from pious bani of Aasa Di Vaar by Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, documented on Ang 472 - 473of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji under Raga Asa.

English Translation

Slok Mahalla Pehla ( Jekar Sutak Maniye Sabte Sootak Hoye )

At the time of the birth of a child in any house, if it renders the place impure; then the whole world, where some work or action is taking place should be considered as impure, affected by sootak. (as per Hindu belief) Even the cow dung cake (used for fire burning) and the wood used for burning, have some small organisms which should render them impure, (Affected by sootak due to life inside) all this would constitute sootak. Whatever grains of food we see or use in the world are having some living being within it as nothing is without life. To start with, Water itself has life, as it renders everything green and lively; (full of life) even the kitchen is always affected by these impurities of sootak. How to save oneself from the queer effects of sootak (falsehood)? O Nanak! It is only through knowledge, and acquisition of otherworldly material wealth will be of no use, that we could live comfortably by making use of washing this impurity with True Name (1)

Mahalla Pehla: The impurity (sootak) of mind is greed and avarice, impurity of the tongue is the falsehood practiced by it; seeing and enjoying the beauty of another's woman is the impurity (sootak) of eyes; usurping another's wealth or property is the impurity of hand; so far impurity of ears is concerned it is the slander used or accepted as truth. O Nanak! A nice person resembling the swan being so pure now behaves like a crane with the intention to kill and thus proceeds to hell with the god of death. (2)

Mahalla Pehla: All this talk of sootak or impurity is a mirage or falsehood, being engaged in dual-mindedness. The Lord's Will orders birth or death so man is born or dies in accordance with the Lord's Will or dictates. Whatever food or other eatables Lord has provided us or the wealth given by Him to us is all pure and we could partake in it as we like.Ó Nanak! The persons, who have realized Lord's Will in our births and deaths, are not affected by falsehood or impurities or sootak does not bother them.

Pauri: In the age of Satyug, which is acclaimed all over the place as praiseworthy, we should sing the praises of the Lord. Once the Guru enabled us to meet and join the Lord- spouse we could realize the beauty and grandeur of the Lord. Once the Lord's Will directed us towards remembering the Lord within the mind, we inculcated the Lord's love within the heart. Even all the vices and vicious thoughts were by the Lord's Will, when it pleases Him He protects us with His support. We get all the nine treasures of the world when it pleases the Lord, and He showers His blessings on us through His Grace. (18)

श्लोक महला १॥
यदि सूतक रूपी वहम को सत्य मान लिया जाए तो सूतक सब में होता है।
गोबर एवं लकड़ी में भी कीड़ा होता है।
जितने भी अनाज के दाने इस्तेमाल किए जाते हैं, कोई भी दाना जीव के बिना नहीं।
सर्वप्रथम जल ही जीवन है, जिससे सब कुछ हरा-भरा (ताजा) होता है।
सूतक किस तरह दूर रखा जा सकता है ? यह सूतक हमारी पाकशाला (रसोई) में भी रहता है।
हे नानक ! भ्रमों के कारण पड़ा सूतक इस तरह कभी दूर नहीं होता, इसे ज्ञान द्वारा ही शुद्ध करके दूर किया जा सकता है॥ १॥

महला १॥
मन का सूतक लोभ है अर्थात् लोभ रूपी सूतक मन को चिपकता है और जीभ का सूतक झूठ है अर्थात् झुठ रूपी सूतक जीभ से लगता है।
ऑखों का सूतक पराई नारी, पराया-धन एवं रूप-यौवन को देखना है।
कानों का सूतक कानों से पराई निन्दा सुनना है।
हे नानक ! इन सूतकों के कारण मनुष्य की आत्मा जकड़ी हुई यमपुरी जाती है॥ २॥

महला १॥
यह जीवन-मृत्यु वाला सूतक सिर्फ भ्र्म ही है, जो द्वैतभाव के कारण सबको लगा हुआ है।
जन्म एवं मरण प्रभु का हुक्म है और उसकी रज़ा द्वारा ही मनुष्य जन्म लेता और प्राण त्यागता है।
खाना-पीना पवित्र है, क्योंकि प्रभु ने सभी जीवों को भोजन दिया है।
हे नानक ! जो गुरुमुख बनकर इस भेद को समझ लेता है, उसे सूतक नहीं लगता॥ ३॥

पौड़ी।
जिस सतगुरु में महान् गुण मौजूद हैं, उसे बड़ा मानकर उसी की स्तुति करनी चाहिए।
भगवान की कृपा से सतगुरु मिल जाए तो वह सतगुरु की बड़ाई को देखता है।
जब उसे अच्छा लगता है तो वह मनुष्य के मन में बसा देता है।
ईश्वर का हुक्म हो तो सतगुरु मनुष्य के मस्तक पर हाथ रखकर तमाम बुराइयाँ निकाल कर फेंक देता है।
जब प्रभु प्रसन्न हो जाए तो नवनिधियाँ प्राप्त हो जाती हैं॥ १८ ॥

ਜੇ ਸੂਤਕ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਨ ਲਈਏ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੇ ਮੰਨ ਲਈਏ ਕਿ ਸੂਤਕ ਦਾ ਭਰਮ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਭੀ ਚੇਤਾ ਰੱਖੋ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਸੂਤਕ ਸਭ ਥਾਈਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ; ਗੋਹੇ ਤੇ ਲਕੜੀ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਭੀ ਕੀੜੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੰਮਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ) ; ਅੰਨ ਦੇ ਜਿਤਨੇ ਭੀ ਦਾਣੇ ਹਨ, ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਦਾਣਾ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਪਾਣੀ ਆਪ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਹਰਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿੰਦ ਵਾਲਾ) ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸੂਤਕ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? (ਭਾਵ, ਸੂਤਕ ਦਾ ਭਰਮ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਮੰਨਣਾ ਬੜਾ ਹੀ ਕਠਨ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਹੀ) ਰਸੋਈ ਵਿਚ ਸੂਤਕ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਭਰਮਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਂ) ਸੂਤਕ (ਮਨ ਤੋਂ) ਨਹੀਂ ਉਤਰਦਾ, ਇਸ ਨੂੰ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਗਿਆਨ ਹੀ ਧੋ ਕੇ ਲਾਹ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।1।
