ਕੀ ਮੈਂ ਜਵਾਹਰਾਤਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੜਿਤ, ਲਾਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਣੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਹਲ, ਜਿਹੜੇ ਕਸਤੂਰੀ, ਕੇਸਰ ਅਤੇ ਚੌਆ ਤੇ ਸੰਦਲ ਦੀ ਲੱਕੜੀ ਦੇ ਬੁਰਾਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਲਿੱਪੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਣ ਅਤੇ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੀਬਰ ਉਮੰਗਾਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੇਰ ਦੇਣ, ਲੈ ਲਵਾਂ? ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿਤੇ ਐਸਾ ਨਾਂ ਹੋਵੇ ਕਿ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪੈ ਜਾਵਾਂ ॥ ਤੈਨੂੰ, ਹੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ! ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਵਾਂ, ਅਤੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਮੇਰੇ ਦਿਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ਼ ਨਾਂ ਕਰੇ ॥

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਸੁੱਕ ਸੜ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਤੋਂ ਪਤਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਤਸੱਲੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ ਕਿ (ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ) ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਜਗ੍ਹਾ ਨਹੀਂ ॥ ਠਹਿਰਾਉ ॥ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਫ਼ਰਸ਼ ਰਤਨਾ ਤੇ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਫੁੱਲ ਜੜਤ ਹੋਵੇ ॥ ਪਲੰਘ ਪੰਨਿਆਂ, ਸਬਜ਼ਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੜਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ, ਅਤੇ ਮਾਣਿਕ ਨਾਲ ਸਜਤ ਚਿਹਰੇ ਵਾਲੀ ਦਿਲ ਚੁਰਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੂਰਾ-ਪਰੀ ਪਿਆਰ ਤੇ ਦਿਲ ਖਿੱਚਵੇ ਇਸ਼ਾਰਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਲੰਘ ਉਤੇ ਸੱਦੇ ॥ ਕਿਤੇ ਐਸਾ ਨਾਂ ਹੋਵੇ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੱਕ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਰਾਹੋ ਘੁਸ ਜਾਵਾਂ, ਤੈਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਰ ਜਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਰਾਧਨ ਨਾਂ ਕਰਾਂ ॥

ਕਰਾਮਾਤੀ ਬੰਦਾ ਬਣ ਜੇਕਰ ਮੈਂ ਕਰਾਮਾਤਾ ਕਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਧਨ ਸੰਪਦਾ ਨੂੰ ਹੁਕਮ ਦੇਹ ਸੱਦ ਲਵਾਂ, ਅਤੇ ਜੇਕਰ ਮੈਂ ਮਰਜ਼ੀ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਅਲੋਪ ਤੇ ਪਰਤੱਖ ਹੋ ਜਾਵਾਂ, ਜਿਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜਨਤਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਦਰ ਤੇ ਮਾਣ ਕਰੇ ॥ ਕਿਤੇ ਐਸਾ ਨਾਂ ਹੋਵੇ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੱਕ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਰਾਹੋ ਘੁਸ ਜਾਵਾਂ, ਤੈਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਰ ਜਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਰਾਧਨ ਨਾਂ ਕਰਾਂ ॥

ਜੇਕਰ ਮੈਂ ਮਹਾਰਾਜਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਵਾਂ, ਭਾਰੀ ਸੈਨਾ ਜਮ੍ਹਾ ਕਰ ਲਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਰਾਜ ਸਿੰਘਾਸਨ ਉਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਪੈਰ ਟਿਕਾ ਲਵਾਂ ਤੇ ਤਖਤ ਦੇ ਉਤੇ ਬਹਿ ਕੇ ਜੇਕਰ ਮੈਂ ਫੁਰਮਾਨ ਜਾਰੀ ਕਰਾਂ, ਅਤੇ ਮਾਮਲਾ ਉਗਰਾਹਾਂ, ਹੈ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁਝ ਹਵਾ ਦੇ ਬੁੱਲੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਕਿਤੇ ਐਸਾ ਨਾਂ ਹੋਵੇ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੱਕ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਰਾਹੋ ਘੁਸ ਜਾਵਾਂ, ਤੈਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਰ ਜਾਵਾ ਅਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਰਾਧਨ ਨਾਂ ਕਰਾਂ ॥

हर बिन जीओ जल बल जाओ ॥ मै आपणा गुरु पूछ देखिआ अवर नाही थाओ ॥१॥ रहाओ ॥

मोती त मंदर ऊसरहि रतनी त होहि जड़ाओ ॥ कसतूर कुंगू अगर चंदन लीप आवै चाओ ॥ मत देख भूला वीसरै तेरा चित न आवै नाओ ॥१॥

धरती त हीरे लाल जड़ती पलघ लाल जड़ाओ ॥ मोहणी मुख मणी सोहै करे रंग पसाओ ॥ मत देख भूला वीसरै तेरा चित न आवै नाओ ॥२॥

5. Hindi Translation

अगर मोतियों से महल बनाए जाएं और उन्हें रत्नों से सजाया जाए, कस्तूरी, कुमकुम, अगर और चंदन से महल की दीवारों को सुगंधित किया जाए, तो भी, यदि इस चकाचौंध को देखकर मनुष्य भ्रमित हो जाए और तेरा (भगवान का) नाम भूल जाए, तो यह सब व्यर्थ है।

हरि के बिना जीवन जलकर नष्ट हो जाता है। मैंने अपने गुरु से पूछा और देखा कि तेरे सिवा कहीं और कोई ठिकाना नहीं है। रहाउ।

धरती पर हीरे और लाल जड़े हों, और पलंग रत्नों से सजा हो, मोहक मुख पर मणि सुशोभित हो और रंग-बिरंगी सजावट की जाए, तो भी, अगर इस सौंदर्य को देखकर मनुष्य भूल जाए और भगवान का नाम याद न करे, तो यह सब व्यर्थ है।

सिद्ध बनूं, और सिद्धियों को प्राप्त करूं, और कहूं कि सारी संपत्ति मेरे पास आ गई, गुप्त और प्रकट रूप में बैठूं और लोग मेरा सम्मान करें, तो भी, अगर इस प्रतिष्ठा को देखकर मैं भूल जाऊं और तेरा नाम याद न करूं, तो यह सब व्यर्थ है।

मैं सुल्तान बनूं, सेना इकट्ठी करूं और सिंहासन पर बैठूं, हुक्म चलाऊं और सब कुछ मेरे अधीन हो जाए, तो भी यह केवल हवा ही है। अगर मैं यह सब देखकर भूल जाऊं और तेरा नाम याद न करूं, तो यह सब बेकार है।

In the absence of the Master my heart is aflame.
I've confirmed with my Guru; there are no quarters for the dame.

Should there be a mansion like a gem, studded with pearls,
Adorned with musk, saffron, agar in a sandalwood frame,
Don't you get lost and forget the Lord's Name. (1)

Should the ground around be studded with gems and bedstead with pearls
And to play her charm a beauty with jewel like face came.
Don't you get lost and forget the Lord's Name. (2)

Should you be an occult working miracles, acquiring powers supernatural,
Appearing and disappearing, playing the magic game.
Don't you get lost and forget the Lord's Name. (3)

Should you be a sultan with forces, sitting on a throne
With absolute power, says Nanak, it's all a play of fickle fame.

Even if your house were built of precious stones, in the most elegant manner, studded with gems and pearls; and the fragrance of most pleasing nature is enjoyed by you.

Beware, O Man! Lest you forget the True Lord, being enchanted and enamoured by these things and caring not for the True Name of the Lord. (1)

I have been convinced by my Guru's guidance that there is no other solace except that of the Lord, and without remembering the Lord this life will be a sheer waste, resulting in my body and soul being burnt and destroyed. (Pause-1)
If the floors of your house were studded with blood-red stones and a beauty full of passion and lust seated on it, were to entertain you bewitchingly. Beware, O Man! Lest you forget the True Name of the Lord, being enchanted with these things. (2)

Even if you were to acquire the status of a sage with occult powers, of acquiring wealth and being seen or Unseen at Will, thus being adored by your fellow-beings in awe. Beware, O Man! Lest you forget the True Name of the Lord, being engrossed in such things. (3)

O Nanak! Even if you were to become an Emperor, seated on the Imperial throne, commanding large armies and your orders were being acknowledged the World over, consider all this as a passing phase, like the blowing wind. Beware, O Man! Lest you forget the True Name of the Lord being enamoured with all these worldly luxuries. (4-1)
