ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੩ ॥ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵ ਨ ਕੀਨੀਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਲਗੋ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ ਸਬਦੈ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਆਇਓ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਧੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਈ ਕਿਤੁ ਆਇਆ ਸੈਸਾਰਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲੰਘੇ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
ਮਃ ੩ ॥ ਇਕੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜਾਗਤਾ ਹੋਰੁ ਜਗੁ ਸੂਤਾ ਮੋਹਿ ਪਿਆਸਿ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਜਾਗੰਨਿ ਸੇ ਜੋ ਰਤੇ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਗੁਣਤਾਸਿ ॥ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਧ ਨ ਚੇਤਨੀ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਿ ਹੋਹਿ ਬਿਨਾਸਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਿਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਜਿਨ ਕੰਉ ਧੁਰਿ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆਸਿ ॥੨॥
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਛਤੀਹ ਪਰਕਾਰ ਜਿਤੁ ਖਾਇਐ ਹਮ ਕਉ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਭਈ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਪੈਨਣੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਨੰਗੇ ਨ ਹੋਵਹ ਹੋਰ ਪੈਨਣ ਕੀ ਹਮਾਰੀ ਸਰਧ ਗਈ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਵਣਜੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਕੀ ਹਮ ਕੰਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਕਾਰਕੁਨੀ ਦੀਈ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਕਾ ਹਮ ਲੇਖਾ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸਭ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਅਗਲੀ ਕਾਣਿ ਗਈ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਜਿਨ ਕੰਉ ਧੁਰਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਲਿਖਤੁ ਪਈ ॥੧੭॥
1. English Translation
Slok Mahalla 3rd (Gurmukh Sev Na Kiniya )
The persons, who have not served the Guru by following the Guru's guidance (teachings), and have not developed the love of the True Name or the self-willed persons, who have not partaken the nectar of True Name, are always passed through the cycle of births and deaths.
Why has this blind faithless (self~ willed) person been born in this world since he has never recited the Lord's True Name? O, Nanak! The Guru-minded persons, blessed with the Lord's Grace, have been able to cross this ocean of life successfully. (1)
Mahalla 3rd
The whole world is lying in the slumber of (love of) desires and attachments except the True Guru who is fully awake whereas all others are engrossed in the worldly falsehood and sleeping in ignorance.
However, the Guru minded persons, who have served the True Guru, are fully awake, being imbued with the love of the treasure of True Name, whereas the blind faithless (self-willed) persons who never remember the Lord (by reciting True Name) always perish going through the cycle of births and deaths. O, Nanak! In fact, only the fortunate Guru-minded persons, who are destined by the Lord's Will, recite the True Name of the Lord. (2)
Pouri
O, Brother! The Lord's True Name is like the most delicious food (of all thirty-six types), by partaking it we get fully satiated and satisfied. The Lord's True Name alone is like our dress, by wearing such a dress we do not feel naked and we have lost all the charm of wearing rich clothes.
(Being immersed in True Name we have no desire for rich clothes, as this cover is most beautiful for the mind). We deal only in the merchandise of True Name of the Lord in our business of life and the Lord has bestowed us with this knowledge only so that we can only deal in this business of reciting True Name.
We have amassed the wealth of True Name and there is nothing else in our account and there is no need to beseech the Yama now. But there are few Guru-minded persons who have recited the True Name, who are predestined by the Lord's Will due to their good actions (earlier), and have enjoyed the bliss of life by attaining the True Name, due to their good fortune. (17)

ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਨਾ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤੀ, ਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੀ ਲੱਗਾ, ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਰਸ ਭੀ ਨਾ ਆਇਆ, (ਤਾਹੀਏਂ) ਘੜੀ ਮੁੜੀ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ; ਜੇ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਣ ਦਾ ਕੀਹ ਲਾਭ (ਉਸ ਨੇ ਖੱਟਿਆ) ? ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਤੇ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ (ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਾਗਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਉਤਰਦੇ ਹਨ।੧।
ਇਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਸੁਚੇਤ ਹੈ, ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਿਚ ਸੁੱਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ; ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, (ਉਹ) ਜਾਗਦੇ ਹਨ। ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ, ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਤਬਾਹ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ; ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਧੁਰ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ (ਕੀਤੇ ਭਲੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਲੇਖ) ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ।੨।
ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਾਡਾ ਛੱਤੀ (੩੬) ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਕਈ ਸੁਆਦਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ) ਭੋਜਨ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਖਾ ਕੇ ਅਸੀ ਰੱਜ ਗਏ ਹਾਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਾਇਕ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਾਂ) ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਸਾਡੀ ਪੁਸ਼ਾਕ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਹਿਨ ਕੇ ਕਦੇ ਬੇ-ਪੜਦਾ ਨਾਹ ਹੋਵਾਂਗੇ, ਤੇ ਹੋਰ (ਸੁੰਦਰ) ਪੁਸ਼ਾਕਾਂ ਪਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਸਾਡੀ ਚਾਹ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਾਡਾ ਵਣਜ, ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਸਾਡਾ ਵਪਾਰ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਮੁਖ਼ਤਿਆਰੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ; ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਅਸਾਂ ਲੇਖਾ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੈ, (ਜਿਸ ਲੇਖੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਜਮ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ਾਮਦ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਨੇ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ (ਉਹੀ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਧੁਰੋਂ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਉੱਕਰੇ ਹੋਏ) ਲੇਖ ਦੀ ਪਰਾਪਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।੧੭।

श्लोक महला ३॥ जिस व्यक्ति ने गुरु के सान्निध्य में रहकर सेवा नहीं की, हरि के नाम से भी प्रेम नहीं लगाया और गुरु-शब्द का स्वाद भी नहीं प्राप्त किया, ऐसा अज्ञानी व्यक्ति बार-बार दुनिया में मरता एवं जन्मता रहता है। अन्धा मनमुख पुरुष यदि भगवान को कभी याद ही नहीं करता तो उसका इस दुनिया में आने का क्या अभिप्राय है ? हे नानक ! भगवान जिस पर अपनी करुणा-दृष्टि करता है, वह गुरु के सान्निध्य में रहकर भवसागर से पार हो जाता है॥१॥
महला ३॥ एक सतगुरु ही जाग्रत रहता है, परन्तु बाकी सारी दुनिया मोह एवं तृष्णा में निद्रा-मग्न है। जो लोग गुणों के भण्डार सत्य-नाम में मग्न हैं और सतगुरु की सेवा करते हैं, वे मोह-तृष्णा की ओर से जाग्रत रहते हैं। अन्धे मनमुख व्यक्ति भगवान को याद नहीं करते, जिसके कारण जन्म-मरण के चक्र में ही उनका विनाश हो जाता है। हे नानक ! जिनकी तकदीर में विधाता ने प्रारम्भ से ही लिखा हुआ है, उन्होंने ही गुरु के माध्यम से नाम का ध्यान किया है॥ २॥
पौड़ी ॥ हरि का नाम हमारा छत्तीस प्रकार का स्वादिष्ट भोजन है, जिसको खाने से हमें बड़ी तृप्ति हुई है। हरि का नाम हमारा पहनावा है, जिसे पहनने से हम दुबारा नग्न नहीं होंगे तथा अन्य कुछ पहनने की हमारी चाहत दूर हो गई है। हरि का नाम ही हमारा वाणिज्य है, हरि का नाम ही व्यापार है और हरि के नाम का ही कारोबार सतिगुरु ने हमें दिया है। हरि-नाम का ही हमने लेखा लिख दिया है और यम की अगली सारी मुहताजी खत्म हो गई है। जिनकी तकदीर में विधाता ने शुरु से ही नाम लब्धि का ऐसा लेख लिखा है, ऐसे किसी विरले गुरुमुख ने ही हरि-नाम का ध्यान किया है॥१७॥
