ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ (ਮਾਇਆ) ਨੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਤ੍ਰੈ-ਗੁਣੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਚਾਰ-ਕੂਟ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਜੱਗ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ, ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ, ਤਪ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਥਾਂ ਭੰਨ ਕੇ ਰੱਖ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ, ਇਸ ਜੀਵ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ ਦੀ ਕੀਹ ਪਾਂਇਆਂ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਟਾਕਰਾ ਕਰ ਸਕੇ)? ॥੧॥ ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਪੱਲਾ ਫੜਿਆ, ਤਦੋਂ ਉਹ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪੰਜੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਬਚ ਗਿਆ ॥ ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਣੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤੇ, ਤਦੋਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਰੋਗ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮੁੱਕ ਗਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਆ ਕੇ ਭਰਮਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਨਾਹ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਸੁਣੀਦੀ ਹੈ, ਨਾਹ ਉਹ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਬੋਲਦੀ ਹੈ, ਨਾਹ ਉਹ ਅੱਖੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦੀ ਹੈ ॥ ਕੋਈ ਅਜੇਹੀ ਨਸ਼ੀਲੀ ਚੀਜ਼ ਖਵਾ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਪਈ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੨॥ ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਾਂ, ਪਿਉ, ਪੁੱਤਰ, ਮਿੱਤਰ, ਭਰਾ-ਉਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੇ ਹਰੇਕ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਤਕਰਾ ਪਾ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ ॥ ਕਿਸੇ ਪਾਸ (ਮਾਇਆ) ਬਹੁਤੀ ਹੈ, ਕਿਸੇ ਪਾਸ ਥੋੜੀ ਹੈ (ਬੱਸ, ਇਸੇ ਗੱਲੇ) ਸਾਰੇ (ਆਪੋ ਵਿਚ) ਲੜ ਲੜ ਕੇ ਪਏ ਖਪਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥ ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ) ਇਹ ਤਮਾਸ਼ਾ (ਅੱਖੀਂ) ਵਿਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ॥ (ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਇਸ) ਲੁਕੀ ਹੋਈ ਅੱਗ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਸੜ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ (ਆਪਣਾ) ਜ਼ੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦੀ ॥੪॥ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬੜਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ; ਉਸ ਦੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਲੇ) ਸਾਰੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਕੱਟੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ (ਜਿਸ ਨੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਲੱਭ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਹ ਧਨ ਖੱਟ-ਕਮਾ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਲੈ ਆਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ॥੫॥੧੧॥ (Translation by Prof. Sahib Singh Ji. )

O Brother! What is the value of this poor and helpless man before the three-pronged worldly falsehood (Maya) comprising lust for power, greed or jealousy and partial peace, which has controlled the whole world consisting of fourteen countries? The human being feels helpless before the worldly falsehood, which has made impure all the holy places or rituals like bathing at holy places through its impure touch. (1)

O Brother! We could rid ourselves of this worldly bondage by taking the support of the True Lord. By singing the praises of the Lord in the company of holy saints and the Guru's Grace, we could cast away all our sins and afflictions. (Pause - 1)

This worldly falsehood (Maya) has enamoured and ensnared the whole world with its charm and appeal to such an extent that no one could ever imagine its charm or express its beauty (which no one has even seen, how it is alluring the whole lot with its charm). It has the effect of the deceitful herb, which lends its charm and sweetness to one and all and leads all astray. (2)

This worldly falsehood has enamoured the whole world including mother, father, son, friend, brother or near and dear ones (beloved relations) with its charm by producing dual- mindedness and differences amongst all these people. Infact, the whole world is engaged in quarrels amongst itself due to the presence of this wealth in varying quantities or to usurp more of this Maya (wealth) from one another. (3)

I would offer myself as a sacrifice to the True Guru who has made me realise its face value by showing clearly the role of Maya in its deceitful form. O Nanak! The whole world is burning in the hidden fire of this worldly falsehood except the holy saints, who have not been ensnared by its charm. (4)

We have enjoyed the eternal bliss through the company and benevolence of the holy saints, by casting away the worldly bondage of the ages. O Nanak! We have attained the wealth of True Name of the Lord through the Guru's guidance, which has resulted in the enlightenment of the mind and attainment of self realisation. (5-11)

धनासरी महला ५ ॥ जिन कीने वस अपुनै त्रै गुण भवण चतुर संसारा ॥ जग इसनान ताप थान खंडे क्या इहु जंत विचारा ॥१॥ प्रभ की ओट गही तौ छूटो ॥ साध प्रसाद हरि हरि हरि गाए बिखै ब्याध तब हूटो ॥१॥ रहाओ ॥ नह सुणीऐ नह मुख ते बकीऐ नह मोहै उह डीठी ॥ ऐसी ठगौरी पाय भुलावै मन सभ कै लागै मीठी ॥२॥ माय बाप पूत हित भ्राता उन घर घर मेलिओ दूआ ॥ किस ही वाध घाट किस ही पहि सगले लर लर मूआ ॥३॥ हौं बलिहारी सतिगुर अपुने जिन इहु चलत दिखाया ॥ गूझी भाहि जलै संसारा भगत न ब्यापै माया ॥४॥ संत प्रसाद महा सुख पाया सगले बंधन काटे ॥ हरि हरि नामु नानक धन पाया अपुनै घर लै आया खाटे ॥५॥११॥

जिन्होंने इस संसार में तीन गुणों (सत, रज, तम) के अधीन सभी प्राणियों को अपने वश में किया है, और जो इस संसार के चतुर (चालाक) लोग हैं, वे भी इस भ्रम में फंसे हुए हैं। लोग पवित्र स्थानों पर स्नान करते हैं, तपस्या करते हैं और धामों की यात्रा करते हैं, परंतु यह जीव तो बेबस और साधारण है, इससे क्या लाभ होगा? जब मैंने प्रभु की शरण ली, तब जाकर मैं इस संसारिक बंधनों से मुक्त हुआ। संतों की कृपा से जब मैंने हरि का नाम गाया, तो मुझसे सारे विकार, व्याधियाँ, दुख और कष्ट दूर हो गए। १॥ रहाओ॥

न तो उसे सुनाई देती है, न वह उसे बोलता है और न ही वह उसे देखता है, फिर भी वह माया के जाल में फंसा रहता है। यह माया की ठगी ऐसा नशा है, जिससे मन बहक जाता है और हर किसी को मीठी लगती है। २॥ माँ-बाप, पुत्र, भाई, और रिश्तेदारों के मोह में यह जीव उलझा रहता है और हर घर में इस माया के बंधनों से बंधा रहता है। यहाँ हर कोई किसी न किसी से उलझा रहता है और इसी झगड़े में सब मर जाते हैं। ३॥ मैं अपने सतगुरु पर बलिहारी जाता हूँ, जिन्होंने मुझे इस संसार की यह चाल समझाई है। यह संसार छिपी हुई अग्नि में जल रहा है, लेकिन प्रभु-भक्ति में लीन भक्तों को माया प्रभावित नहीं करती। ४॥ संतों की कृपा से मुझे महान सुख मिला है, और माया की गुलामी के सभी बंधन काट दिए गए हैं। नानक कहते हैं, मैंने हरि का नाम रूपी धन पाया है और इसे अपने घर ले आया हूँ। ५॥११॥
