Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji - Brief Intro
Guru Hargobind was the first Sikh Gurus to have entered a military career. He gave a new turn to the Sikh way of life. He turned saints into soldiers and yet remained a man of God. Gurudev believed that in the times they were living in, religion could not be separated from politics. He infused courage and strength into his people and made them men of steel. His resorting to arms was justified since he always fought for truth, justice, and defence. Guru Hargobind also paid a lot of attention to the spiritual enlightenment of his disciples.
Guruji also concentrated on social development and reforms of the people. He detested miracle-making since he found it wrong to interfere with the ways and rules of God. He was a just warrior who always fought against injustice and showed the righteous path to distressed humanity. Guru Hargobind was an amazing combination of a man of action and meditation. He was truly a soldier-saint. To read the full biography click here.

Badshah-e-Miri Piri
The concept of Miri-Piri laid by Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji can be understood as follows;
'Pir' means sainthood and 'Miri' denotes sovereignty. The sequence has been placed as such that sainthood is mentioned first and then temporal making it clear that the prerequisite to bear arms is knowledge and spirituality.
This concept has also been utilized by Guru Gobind Singh Ji multiple times under a similar context but as a different name where Miri= Tegh and Piri= Degh. The Degh and Tegh are Persian words, meaning kettle and the sword respectively. Death means cooking pot which symbolizes the free kitchen (Langar) and sainthood. Whereas, Tegh means sword which symbolizes dignity, power, and sovereignty.

These are lines of famous poems from the Bhai Mir Abdullah and Bhai Natha - who were the famous Dhadhis employed by Guru Hargobind. These lines translate to the following:
Sri Guru Hargobind Ji adorned two swords introducing the concept of saint-soldier.
One Sword of Glory (Piri-Spirituality), one of Sovereignty (Miri), and both to protect the believers.
His arms possess the strength of defeating millions of forts and His intellectual ability shatters the strongest doors of knowledge possessed by the greatest known scholars.
He had the most faithful soldiers like Neel and Nal, and Guru Ji stripped the tyrants of their powers.
