Gayi Bahor Bandi Chhor Nirankar Dukhdari; Bani Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, Documented in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji at Ang 624-625 under Raga Sorath.

2. English Translation

Sorath Mahala - 5 ( Gayi Bahor Bandi Chhor ) O Lord! The Destroyer of all our sufferings & the savior from all our worldly bondage! The years of our life, which have gone by without remembering You, were a sheer waste! Pray help me to make them successful again.

O, Lord! I was really very greedy and always engrossed in worldly attachments and was never interested in doing any good deed as I never knew the code of discipline based on my moral duties. I was known in the world as a devotee of the Lord. Though it was based on a false notion that I was a holy saint as I practiced True Name with false pretensions. O, True Master! Now You alone could. protect my honor, having known my false practice of Name. (1)

O, Lord! You are the pride of the prideless or the honor of the most humble persons! O, True Master! I offer myself as a sacrifice to Your Nature, as You convert most unintelligent persons into competent and (intelligent) wise individuals. (Pause)

Just as a child, due to his undeveloped brain, does engage himself in certain sins or vicious (acts), without thinking, and, his father gets annoyed with him and gives him a piece of his mind, but then caresses him also as a son. Similarly. The Lord also pardons all our sins and shortcomings and directs us onto the right path, just as the father instructs and leads his child: on to the right path. (2)

Virtuous Deeds

Whom should we approach with our failings and inner feelings, as the Lord already knows our feelings and thoughts, being omniscient? My True Master is not pleased with our tall talk or jargon, as He is pleased only with the person engaged in virtuous deeds.

O, Lord! Whom else should we approach, as You are the only protector of our honor? O, True Master! I have tried all other avenues and found that there is none else except You who could help me, as You are my only support. May the Lord protect us with His helping Hand and through His Grace! (3)

O, Nanak! I will be happy and satisfied only when the Lord-benefactor would listen and accept my prayers. All my worries and doubts will be eliminated when the Lord would help me to join the company (unite with) of the Guru.

It is only when the Guru would offer me the panacea of the Lord's True Name that my suffering and malady would be cured and I would be enabled to enjoy eternal bliss. May the Lord - bless us with the panacea of all ills, the True Name, through His Grace! ( 4-12-62)

सोरठि महला ५ ॥ निराकार परमात्मा खोई हुई वस्तु को दिलाने वाला, कैद से स्वतंत्र करने वाला एवं दुःखों का नाशक है। मैं तो लोभ एवं माया का पुजारी हूँ जो कोई शुभकर्म एवं धर्म नहीं जानता। हे ईश्वर ! मेरा नाम गोविन्द का भक्त पड़ गया है, अतः अपने नाम की लाज रखो ॥ १॥

हे ईश्वर ! तू सम्मान-हीन व्यक्तियों का सम्मान है। मेरा गोविन्द नाचीज़ व्यक्तियों को भी गुणवान बना देता है। मैं तेरी कुदरत पर कुर्बान जाता हूँ॥ रहाउ॥

जैसे बालक स्नेह एवं स्वभाववश लाखों ही अपराध करता है और चाहे उसका पिता उसे अनेक तरीकों से उपदेश देता एवं झिड़कता है परन्तु अन्तः वह उसे अपने गले से लगा लेता है। इस तरह परमपिता परमेश्वर भी जीवों के पिछले अवगुणों को क्षमा कर देता है और भविष्य हेतु सन्मार्ग प्रदान कर देता है॥ २॥

अन्तर्यामी प्रभु समस्त विधियाँ जानता है तो फिर किस के समक्ष अपनी वेदना सुनाई जा सकती है? निरा बातें एवं खुशामद करने से गोविन्द प्रसन्न नहीं होता, यदि उसे उपयुक्त लगे तो ही वह मनुष्य की लाज बचाता है। हे स्वामी ! मैंने अन्य सभी आश्रय देख लिए हैं, मुझे एक तेरा ही आश्रय रह गया है॥ ३॥

ठाकुर प्रभु दयालु एवं कृपालु होकर स्वयं ही विनती सुनता है। जब पूर्ण सतगुरु उसके संग मिला देता है, तब मन की सारी चिंता मिट जाती है।

हे नानक ! गुरु ने हरि-नाम की औषधि भेरे मुँह में डाल दी है और अब मैं सुखी रहता हूँ॥४॥ १२॥ ६२॥

ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ! ਤੂੰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਣ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਮਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ। ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਤੋਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੇਰਾ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਕਾਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਆਦਰ-ਜੋਗ ਬਣਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।ਰਹਾਉ।

ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ) ਗਵਾਚੀ ਹੋਈ (ਰਾਸਿ-ਪੂੰਜੀ) ਨੂੰ ਵਾਪਸ ਦਿਵਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਕੈਦ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਛੁਡਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਸਰੂਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ, ਤੂੰ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਢਾਰਸ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ। 

ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਕੋਈ ਚੰਗਾ ਕਰਮ ਕੋਈ ਚੰਗਾ ਧਰਮ ਕਰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ, ਮੈਂ ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਗ੍ਰਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਪਰ ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ 'ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਦਾ ਭਗਤ' ਪੈ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਸੋ, ਹੁਣ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਆਪ ਲਾਜ ਰੱਖ।੧।

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਬੱਚਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਲਗਨ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਸੁਭਾਵ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਗ਼ਲਤੀਆਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪਿਉ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਕਈ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਝਿੜਕਦਾ ਭੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਫਿਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਗਲ ਨਾਲ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਿਤਾ ਭੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਗੁਨਾਹ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਅਗਾਂਹ ਵਾਸਤੇ (ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ) ਠੀਕ ਰਸਤੇ ਉਤੇ ਪਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੧।

ਗੁਰੂ ਕਿਰਪਾ

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ) ਹਰੇਕ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਹਾਲਤ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸ ਪਾਸ (ਆਪਣੀ ਬਿਰਥਾ) ਆਖ ਕੇ ਸੁਣਾਈ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ? ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ। (ਕਰਣੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਉਹ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਰੱਖ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਵੇਖ ਲਏ ਹਨ, ਮੈਂ ਇਕ ਤੇਰਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।੩।

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਇਆਵਾਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ) ਬੇਨਤੀ ਸੁਣ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। 

ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮੇਲ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ, ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਦੀ ਹਰੇਕ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ-ਗੁਰੂ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਦਵਾਈ ਪਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਿਤੀਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।੪।੧੨।੬੨।
