Bandi Chhor Divas marks the historic day when Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji was liberated from Gwalior Jail, along with 52 other imprisoned kings. In contrast, Diwali is celebrated in honor of Lord King Rama's joyous return to Ayodhya after his 14-year exile.

Bandi Chhod Divas History in English and Punjabi.
In popular Sikh Traditions, It is said that when Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji was imprisoned in Gwalior Fort, he refused his freedom unless the other prisoners were freed along with him. This was done using the wit of Gurudev and to mark the event, there is a Gurudwara called Bandi Chhor in Gwalior Fort. This occasion is still celebrated as Bandi Chhor Divas on every Diwali at the Golden Temple.
ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਸਿੱਖ ਪਰੰਪਰਾਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ, ਇਹ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਗਵਾਲੀਅਰ ਦੇ ਕਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੈਦ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਤੋਂ ਇਨਕਾਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਦੋਂ ਤੱਕ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਬਾਕੀ 52 ਕੈਦੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਰਿਹਾਅ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ। ਇਹ ਕਾਰਜ ਗੁਰੂਦੇਵ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਿਵੇਕ ਅਤੇ ਬੁੱਧੀ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਨਾਲ ਨੇਪਰੇ ਚਾਹੜਿਆ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਘਟਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹਿਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ, ਗਵਾਲੀਅਰ ਦੇ ਕਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੰਦੀ ਛੋੜ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਨੂੰ ਅੱਜ ਵੀ ਹਰਿਮੰਦਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਅਤੇ ਪੂਰੀ ਖਲਕਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਰ ਦੀਵਾਲੀ 'ਤੇ ਬੰਦੀ ਛੋੜ ਦਿਵਸ ਵਜੋਂ ਮਨਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬੰਦੀ ਛੋੜ ਦਿਵਸ ਦੀਵਾਲੀ ਦੇ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਤਿਉਹਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਲ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਨਤੀਜੇ ਵਜੋਂ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਹਿੰਦੂਆਂ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਜਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਮਾਨਤਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
