Guru Hargobind was at Amritsar when he got the news from Kiratpur that his eldest son Baba Gurditta had been blessed with a second son on January 30, 1630 A.D. He took the original copy of the Adi Granth with him and left for Kiratpur. However, he left the Adi Granth at Kartarpur Jalandhar. On reaching Kiratpur, Guru Hargobind took his infant grandson onto his lap. He also remarked: "This infant has come to reduce the suffering of mankind." He named him Har Rai.
Though Guru Har Rai kept a cavalry of 2200 Sikhs ready to defend the faith and was himself a great hunter, his heart was so tender that he would capture, but never kill a. bird. Once, lost in his thoughts, he was passing through a garden and a flower fell from the stem struck by the flaps of his loose coat. He was so much filled with remorse that he pledged that thereafter he would always keep the loose folds assembled in his arm, and to this, he stuck throughout his life.
