Katak Barah Maha: English Translation

Katik Karam Kamavane — the Katak passage from Barah Maha.

During the month of Kartik, man enjoys the fruit of his actions, as one reaps whatever one sows; so it is not wise to blame others for our miseries. Due to the separation from the Lord, all the ills have befallen us and being forgetful of the Lord, we get separated from Him for many ages. Whatever pleasures one desires from Maya (Worldly veil of falsehood); have suddenly become bitter and painful in no time. There is none who could act as a go-between (intermediary) me and the Lord to end this misery, so whom should I approach for all my ills every day? In fact, whatever is destined for us, we get in life and nothing happens with our efforts alone; as all our meetings (union) and separations are pre-destined. Due to good fortune, when I happen to meet my Lord, I forget all my worries and miseries of separation.

O Nanak ! My prayer to the Lord, who is called my saviour is that I may be saved from the pangs of this bondage of worldly attachments. If one meets the company of holy saints during Kartik, one gets relieved from all other thoughts and feels the permanent bliss. (9)

ਕੱਤਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੂੰ ਚੰਗੇ ਅਮਲ ਕਰ ॥ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਉਤੇ ਇਲਜਾਮ ਲਾਉਣਾ ਮੁਨਾਸਬ ਨਹੀਂ ॥ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਿਮ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾਉਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਬੀਮਾਰੀਆਂ ਚਿਮੜ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ॥ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਨਾਂ ਰਖਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਉਸ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮਾਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਲਈ ਵਿਛੜ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਇਕ ਮੁਹਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਧਨ ਦੌਲਤ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਰੰਗ ਰਸ ਤਲਖ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲਈ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਵਿਚੋਲਗੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ॥

ਉਹ ਨਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਕੀਹਦੇ ਮੂਹਰੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਵਿਰਲਾਪ ਕਰਨਗੇ? ਆਦਮੀ ਦੇ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ, ਐਨ ਆਰੰਭ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਕਿਸਮਤ ਲਿਖੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ ॥ ਭਾਰੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਤਦ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਦੇ ਦੁਖੜੇ ਸਮੂਹ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਤੂੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੀ ਰਖਿਆ ਕਰ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀਆਂ ਬੇੜੀਆਂ ਕੱਟਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਮਾਲਕ! ਕੱਤਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਸਮੂਹ ਫਿਕਰ ਅੰਦੇਸੇ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥

कतिक करम कमावणे दोस न काहू जोग ॥
परमेसर ते भुलिआं विआपनि सभे रोग ॥

कतिक (कार्तिक) मास में किए गए कर्मों का दोष किसी और पर नहीं लगाया जा सकता। जिन लोगों ने प्रभु के नाम को विस्मृत कर दिया है उन्हें भांति भांति के दुख क्लेश रूपी रोग आ घेरते हैं।

वेमुख होए राम ते लगन जनम विजोग ॥
खिन महि कौड़े होए गए जितड़े माया भोग ॥

प्रभु से विमुख हो कर जन्म-जन्मांतरों का वियोग सहना पड़ता है। क्षण भर में वे सभी माया रूपी भोग विलास कड़वे लगने लगते हैं जो कभी मीठे लगते थे।

विच न कोई कर सकै किस थै रोवहि रोज ॥
कीता किछू न होवई लिखिआ धुर संजोग ॥

फिर जहां भी जाकर रोए, अपना दुख सुनाए, उसकी कोई भी मदद करने में सक्षम नहीं होता। उन कर्मों में बदलाव कौन लावे जो पहले से तेरे प्रारब्ध में लिखे गए हैं, इन कर्मों का भोग इस जन्म में करना ही पड़ेगा।

वडभागी मेरा प्रभु मिलै तां उतरहि सभ बिओग ॥
नानक कौ प्रभ राख लेहि मेरे साहिब बंदी मोच ॥
कतिक होवै साधसंग बिनसहि सभे सोच ॥९॥

गुरु कृपा से जब भाग्योदय होता है तो उस निरंकार का सरोकार हो जाता है, तब यह सारे वियोग खत्म हो जाते हैं। नानक जी कहते हैं, हे प्रभु मुझे अपनी शरण में रख लें, क्योंकि तू ही बंधनों से मुक्ति देने वाला है। यदि कार्तिक महीने में साध संगति (संतों की संगति) मिल जाए, तो सारे चिंता और दुःख मिट जाते हैं।
