ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਲ (ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ) ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਉੱਤੇ ਚੱਲਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਹਉਮੈ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪੀਣ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਸੁੱਕਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨ ਮੁੜ ਹਰਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

हे मेरी प्यारी आत्मा! परमात्मा का नाम आत्मिक जीवन देने वाला अमृत है, यह अमृत गुरु की मति (शिक्षा) पर चलने से ही प्राप्त होता है। हे मेरी जिंदुड़ीए! अहंकार और माया का मोह विष के समान है; हरि-नाम रूपी अमृत पीने से यह सारा विष उतर जाता है।

परमात्मा का नाम ध्याने से (विकारों के कारण) सूखा हुआ मन फिर से हरा-भरा और कोमल हो जाता है। हे दास नानक! जिसे बड़े भाग्य से परमात्मा की प्राप्ति होती है, वह सदैव प्रभु के नाम में ही लीन रहता है।

The Lord's Name is Amrit, my dear,
It is obtained by the guidance of the Guru.
Ego and Maya are vicious, my dear,
Their poison is annulled by the holy brew.
My shrivelled mind has blossomed, my dear,
By meditating on the Name True.
By great good fortune I realised the Lord,
Nanak, the slave is identified with the Name of the Guru. (1]

O my soul! When we recited the True Name of the Lord, this dried and withered heart blossomed forth with freshness and we became full of virtues and goodness. O Nanak! The persons, who are blessed with fortune and are pre-destined, attain the Lord's love and remain immersed in Lord's True Name all the time. (1)
