2. English Translation

Ros na keejai amrit peejai rehan nahee sansaare.
Raaje rai rank nahee rahnaa aae jaae jug chaare.
Rehan kahan te rahai na koee kis pehi karao binantee.
Ek shabad raam naam nirodhar guru devai pat matee. ॥11॥

O Brother! Let us not be enraged with anyone, and partake (drink) the nectar of True Name, as the stay in this world is temporary and short-lived. During all the four ages (Yugas like Sat Yug) people are passing through the cycle of births and deaths as no one, including kings, rich and the poor have to leave this world (as nobody is permanently staying here). Whom should I approach with my prayers (request) as people do not follow the principles they preach (as practice is different from precept)? But the Guru's Word (teachings) about the Lord's True Name is truly helpful in leading a true life provided the Guru blesses us with right thinking (wisdom) to lead an honourable life. (11)

Laaj marantee mar gaee ghooghat khol chalee.
Saas divaanee baavaree sir te sank tlee.
Prem bulaaee ralee siu man meh shabad anand.
Laal ratee laalee bhaee gurmukh bhaee nichind. ॥12॥

Let us get rid of the (people's appreciation) worldly acceptance of our life style as nothing will be gained by such considerations, (we die in feeling ashamed of our behaviour and follow the path of Lord's True Name (without any veil to cover the face). The misgivings and doubts due to ignorance (like the illiterate mother-in-law) which had made us mad, have been got rid of, thus removing our dual-mindedness. Now the same person, by inculcating the love of the Guru's message in the heart, is enjoying the bliss of the Guru's Word by developing the love of the Lord. Now I have become carefree with the Guru's guidance and have got immersed in the Lord by imbibing His love in the heart. (12)

Laaha naam ratan jap saar.
Lab lobh buraa ahankaar.
Laaree chaaree laae tabaar.
Manmukh andhaa mugadh gavaar.
Laaha kaaran aaeaa jag.
Hoe majoor gaeaa thagae thag.
Laaha naam poonjee vesaah.
Nanak sachee pat sachaa paatisaah. ॥13॥

The recitation of the jewel of the True Name brings us lot of benefits (in developing unison with the Lord, whereas the vices of greed, and egoism brings us lot of discredit and defamation. The foolish faithless person has become blind with the vicious thoughts like slander, praise or back-biting of others. Infact, this man was (brought) born in this world for gaining some profit (fruitful results) from this life, but this human being has been deceived and cheated, being a slave of the woman. due to his sexual desires, alongwith the loss of his religious beliefs. O Nanak! The person, who has gained the profit of True Name with the capital investment of faith and trust in the Lord, has become the King of Kings (true king) winning the honour and acclaim of all around (the world). (13)

Aae vigootaa jag jam panth.
Aee na metan ko samrath.
Aath sail neech ghar hoe.
Aath dekh nivai jis doi.
Aath hoe taa mugadh siana.
Bhagat bihuanaa jag bauraanaa.
Sabh meh vartai eko soe.
Jis no kirpaa kare tis pargat hoe. ॥14॥

This man, forgetting the path of the Lord's worship in this world, has suffered at the hands of Yama, being engrossed in Maya (worldly falsehood). But when the death approaches him, there is none to avert this fate of man. This wealth, owned by a poor and mean person even brings lot of comforts and joy to him. Infact, both the Hindus and Muslims pay obeisance to a person seeing his wealth and riches. Even a fool is considered wise by others, if he owns wealth. But without the support of the Lord's worship, the world appears to be foolish. The Lord is pervading equally in all the beings, but enlightens and is perceived by the person blessed with the Lord's Grace. (14)

Jug jug thaap sadaa nirvair.
Janam maran nahee dhandhaa dhair.
Jo deesai so aape aap.
Aap upaae aape ghat thaap.
Aap agochar dhandhai loee.
Jog jugat jagjeevan soee.
Kar aachaar sach sukh hoee.
Naam vihoona mukat kiv hoee. ॥15॥

The Lord, who has created and established the four ages (Yugas like Sat Yug), has enmity towards none and is not (covered) controlled by the cycle of births and deaths and does not wander around. Whatever is perceivable in the world is a personifications of the Lord alone and having created this Universe, the Lord is providing His light within all the beings. (provides sustenance to all). The Lord has Himself engrossed the whole world in (various) worldly bondage, though unaffected by any senses Himself. The Lord Himself provides life and the art of living to the world while the person performing virtuous deeds, enjoys peace and bliss in life. How could a person, bereft (devoid) of True Name attain salvation in this world? (15)

रोसु न कीजै अम्रितु पीजै रहणु नहि संसारै ॥ राजे राइ रंक नहि रहणा आइ जाइ जुग चारे ॥ रहण कहण ते रहै न कोइ किसु पहि करउ बिनंती ॥ एकु सबदु राम नाम निरोधरु गुरु देवै पत मती ॥११॥ लाज मरंती मरि गई घूघटु खोलि चली ॥ सासु दिवानी बावरी सिर ते संक टली ॥ प्रेमि बुलाई रली सिउ मन महि सबदु आनंदु ॥ लालि रती लाली भई गुरमुखि भई निचिंदु ॥१२॥ लाहा नामु रतनु जपि सारु ॥ लबु लोभु बुरा अहंकारु ॥ लाड़ी चाड़ी लाइ तबारु ॥ मनमुखु अंधा मुगधु गवारु ॥ लाहे कारणि आइआ जगि ॥ होइ मजूरु गइआ ठगाइ ठगि ॥ लाहा नामु पूंजी वेसाहु ॥ नानक सची पति सचा पातिसाहु ॥१३॥ आइ विगूता जगु जम पंथु ॥ आई न मेटण को समरथु ॥ आथि सैल नीच घरि होइ ॥ आथि देखि निवै जिसु दोइ ॥ आथि होइ ता मुगधु सिआना ॥ भगति बिहूना जगु बउराना ॥ सभ महि वर्तै एको सोइ ॥ जिसु नो किरपा करे तिसु परगटु होइ ॥१४॥ जुगि जुगि थापि सदा निरवैरु ॥ जनमि मरणि नहि धंधा धैरु ॥ जो दीसै सो आपे आपि ॥ आपि उपाइ आपे घटि थापि ॥ आपि अगोचरु धंधै लोई ॥ जोग जुगति जगजीवनि सोई ॥ करि आचारु सचु सुखु होई ॥ नाम विहूणा मुकि किव होई ॥१५॥

Meaning in Hindi

क्रोध मत करो, अमृत रस (नाम) पियो, यह संसार में कोई भी सदा रहने वाला नहीं। राजा हो, अमीर हो, या गरीब — कोई भी युगों-युगों तक स्थायी नहीं रहता। रहने के बारे में कहने से कोई नहीं रुकता, मैं किससे विनती करूँ? एक ही शबद — "राम नाम" — जो अचल है, वह गुरु ही देता है, और वही मान-सम्मान और बुद्धि प्रदान करता है। ॥11॥

(झूठी) लाज में मरने वाली अब मर चुकी, और अब घूँघट खोलकर चली (प्रेम के मार्ग पर)। सास (सासु माँ) पागल और बावली हो गई, सिर से संकट दूर हो गया। प्रेम से बुलाकर वह मिलन-सुख में जुड़ गई, मन में शबद का आनंद छा गया। लाल रंग (प्रेम) में रंगी हुई वह पूरी तरह लाल हो गई, गुरु के मार्ग पर चलकर वह निश्चिंत हो गई। ॥12॥

नाम रूपी रत्न ही सबसे बड़ा लाभ है, इसे जपना ही सार्थकता है। लोभ, लालच, और अहंकार — ये सब बुराइयाँ हैं। दुनियावी रिश्ते-नाते, परिवार का मोह — ये बंधन हैं। मनमुख (स्वार्थी) अंधा, मूर्ख और गंवार है। लाभ लेने के लिए ही यह मनुष्य जगत में आया है, पर मजदूर की तरह आकर ठगों से ठगा जाकर चला जाता है। लाभ तो नाम रूपी पूँजी पर ही है, नानक कहते हैं — यही सच्चा मान है, यही सच्चा बादशाह है। ॥13॥

यह संसार जन्म-मरण के मार्ग में फँसा हुआ है, और इसे कोई मिटाने की शक्ति नहीं रखता। आठों समुद्र और पहाड़ों में भी अगर नीच घर में पैदा हो, तो भी आठ (दिशाओं) को देखकर वही दो हाथ जोड़कर झुकता है। अगर आठ (संपत्तियाँ, सिद्धियाँ) मिल भी जाएँ, तो भी मूर्ख ही समझदार बनता है। भक्ति के बिना यह संसार पागल हो गया है। सबमें वही एक प्रभु व्याप्त है, और जिस पर वह कृपा करता है, उसी को वह स्पष्ट प्रकट होता है। ॥14॥

युग-युग से वह सदा ही स्थापित है और किसी से वैर नहीं करता। उसके लिए जन्म और मरण का कोई व्यापार नहीं। जो कुछ भी दिखाई देता है, वही प्रभु स्वयं है। वह स्वयं रचता है और स्वयं ही सबको स्थापित करता है। वह अगोचर है और दुनियावी कामों से परे है, योग की सही विधि और जीवनदाता वही है। सच्चे आचरण से ही सच्चा सुख मिलता है, नाम के बिना मुक्ति कैसे हो सकती है? ॥15॥

ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਗੁੱਸੇ ਨਾਂ ਹੋ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸੁਧਾਰਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਨ ਕਰ ॥ ਇਸ ਜੱਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਚਿਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਠਹਿਰਾਨਾ ॥ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹਾਂ, ਸ਼ਹਿਨਸ਼ਾਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਕੰਗਾਲਾਂ ਨੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿਣਾ ॥ ਚੌਹਾਂ ਯੁੱਗਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਹ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਹਰ ਕੋਈ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਏਥੇ ਰਹਾਂਗਾ ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ॥ ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਕੀਹਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਕਰਾਂ, ਜਦ ਕੋਈ ਥਿਰ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ॥ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਮਾਲਕ ਦਾ ਕੇਵਲ ਨਾਮ ਸਦੀਵ ਹੀ ਗੁਣਕਾਰੀ ਹੈ ॥ ਕੇਵਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਆਬਰੂ ਤੇ ਯਥਾਰਥ ਸਮਝ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥

ਮੇਰਾ ਸ਼ਰਮੀਲਾਪਣ ਤੇ ਝਿਜਕ ਮਰ ਤੇ ਮਿੱਟ ਗਈ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਹੁਣ ਮੂੰਹ ਤੋਂ ਪੱਲਾ ਚੁਕ ਕੇ ਤੁਰਦੀ ਹਾਂ ॥ ਮੇਰੀ ਝੱਲੀ ਸੱਸ (ਮਾਇਆ) ਕਮਲੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਹੁਣ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੀਸ ਤੋਂ ਲਹਿ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ॥ ਲਾਡਲੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸੱਦ ਘੱਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਰਿਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੈ ॥ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਿਲਜਾਨੀ (ਪਿਆਰੇ) ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੀਜ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਟਹਿਲਣ ਥੀ ਗਈ ਹਾਂ, ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੈਂ ਬੇਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹਾਂ ॥

ਤੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਹੀਰੇ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਪਰਮ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਨਫਾ ਕਮਾ ॥ ਮੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਲਾਲਚ, ਤਮ੍ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਤਕੱਬਰ ॥ ਨਿੰਦਾ, ਉਸਤਤ ਅਤੇ ਚੁਗਲੀ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਅਧਰਮੀ, ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ, ਮੂਰਖ ਅਤੇ ਬੇਸਮਝ ਥੀ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ॥ ਨਫ਼ਾ ਕਮਾਉਣ ਲਈ, ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਉਹ ਕੁੱਲੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਛਲਨੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਲ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥ ਜੇ ਸਿਦਕ ਦੀ ਰਾਸ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਮੁਨਾਫਾ ਕਮਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ, ਉਹ ਸੱਚੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਆਬਰੂ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਚਾ ਸ਼ਹਿਨਸ਼ਾਹ ਹੈ ॥

ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਇਖਤਿਆਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਤਬਾਹ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ ॥ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਅਸਰ ਜ਼ਾਇਲ ਕਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਬਲਵਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ ॥ ਜੇਕਰ ਧਨ ਦੌਲਤ ਕਿਸੇ ਕਮੀਣ ਮੂਰਖ ਦੇ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਵਿੱਚ ਭੀ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਧਨ-ਦੌਲਤ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਦੋਨੋਂ ਅਮੀਰ ਤੇ ਗਰੀਬ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਲਾਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਜੇਕਰ ਧਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਦ ਇਕ ਬੁੱਧੂ ਭੀ ਅਕਲਮੰਦ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਮਈ ਸੇਵਾ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਰਾਸਰ ਕਮਲਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਉਹ ਇੱਕ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹੀ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ ॥ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਜ਼ਾਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਹੈ ॥

ਦੁਸ਼ਮਨੀ-ਰਹਿਤ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਯੁੱਗਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਦੀਵੀ ਸਥਿਰ ਹੈ ॥ ਉਹ ਬਖੇੜਿਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਲਝਦਾ, ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਤੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਕੁੱਛ ਨਜ਼ਰੀ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਖ਼ੁਦ-ਬਖ਼ੁਦ ਹੀ ਹੈ ॥ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਹੀ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਅਸਥਾਪਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਸੋਚ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਰ੍ਹੇ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਵਿਹਾਰਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਲਝੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ॥ ਉਹ ਜਗਤ ਦੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਜਾਨ, ਖ਼ੁਦ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਮਾਰਗ ਵਿਖਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਉਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਸੱਚਾ ਆਰਾਮ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਦੀ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ?
