Slok Mahala 3
( Kaaman Tou Sigar Kar Ja Pehlan Kant Manaai )
O, human being! Let us first win over the love of the Lord~spouse, the True Guru, and then try to inculcate all other virtues (or beauty aids) like the wedded woman pleasing her spouse first of all, before embellishing herself with the art of beautification.
In fact, if your Lord-spouse does not enjoy your company through His conjugal love then all your efforts at beautification would be of no avail and go to waste. (like the wedded woman not getting any response of her spouse) If the Lord-spouse has accepted the love of the individual then only all his efforts at beautification (gaining virtues) would be worthwhile (just as the wedded woman winning the love and acceptance of her spouse before embellishing herself with ornaments).
When the Lord-spouse accepts the love of the person (devotee), who has embellished himself with His worship or virtues and responds with His love towards the individual, then only all efforts of the person at beautification are worthwhile and fruitful.
O, Nanak! The person, who has surrendered his body and mind (soul) to the Lord-spouse completely and embellishes himself with the (wonder-awe) fear and regard of the Lord and enjoys the bliss of His conjugal love (of her spouse) and partakes the knowledge of Lord's secrets, then only all his efforts at placating the Lord-spouse are fruitful and worthwhile. Then only such a person could enjoy the bliss of life in the company of the Lord-spouse. (1)
Mahala 3
Just as a woman beautifies herself by using the collyrium for the eyes, using flowers for hair-dressing, and eating betel nuts, in trying to placate her spouse in an effort to win his love, whereas the spouse does not respond with love (does not appear on the scene) then all these efforts at beautification would be painful.
(Similarly a person, in trying to please the Lord, does a lot of formal rituals but fails to win the love or response (acceptance) of the Lord, then all these efforts lead to pain and anguish). (2)
Mahala 3
If two persons were sitting together, they cannot be termed as husband and wife in fact when both the souls mingle with each other, then only they could be called true lovers and O, beloved ones even though they possess two different human forms but have one soul only. (3)
Pouri
Without inculcating fear and regard for the Lord- spouse, one cannot perform true worship, and without the worship (prayers) one cannot develop a love for the Lord. First of all, one inculcates fear (regard) for the Lord through the Gurus' guidance, then this fear develops into the love of the Lord with devotion, then with the body and mind imbued with the love of the Lord one casts away one's egoism and worldly desires.
Then the person unites with the Lord, the killer of egoism and dual-mindedness, and gets purified of heart. The True Lord, who is pervading the whole universe, spreads His love and fear (wonder-awe) throughout the world. (9)

श्लोक महला ॥३॥ जीव रूपी कामिनी को तो ही श्रृंगार करना चाहिए, यदि वह पहले अपने पति-प्रभु को प्रसन्न कर ले। क्योंकि पति-प्रभु शायद हृदय रूपी सेज पर न आए तो किया हुआ पूरा श्रृंगार व्यर्थ ही चला जाता है। जब जीव रूपी कामिनी के पति का मन प्रसन्न हुआ तो ही उसे श्रृंगार अच्छा लगा है।
उसका किया हुआ श्रृंगार तो ही मंजूर है, यदि प्रभु उसे प्रेम करे। वह अपने प्रभु के भय को अपना श्रृंगार, हरि रस को पान एवं प्रेम को अपना भोजन बना लेती है। हे नानक ! पति-प्रभु तो ही उससे रमण करता है, जब वह अपना तन, मन इत्यादि सबकुछ प्रभु को सौंप देती है| १॥
महला ३॥ जीव स्त्री ने आँखों में काजल, केशों में फूल, होंठों पर तंबोल रस का श्रृंगार किया है। परन्तु प्रभु उसकी हृदय-सेज पर नहीं आया और उसका किया हुआ श्रृंगार व्यर्थ ही विकार बन गया है॥ २॥
महला ३॥ दरअसल उन्हें पति-पत्नी नहीं कहा जाता जो परस्पर मिलकर बैठते है। पति-पत्नी उन्हें ही कहा जाता है, जिनके शरीर तो दो हैं पर उनमें ज्योति एक है। (अर्थात् दो शरीर एवं एक आत्मा है) ॥ 3 ॥
पउड़ी। श्रद्धा-भय बिना उसकी भक्ति नहीं होती और न ही नाम से प्यार लगता है। सतगुरु को मिलकर ही श्रद्धा रूपी भय उत्पन्न होता है और उस श्रद्धा से भक्ति का सुन्दर रंग चढ़ता है। अहंत्व एवं तृष्णा को समाप्त करके उसका मन-तन प्रभु के रंग में लीन हो गया है। जिसका मन-तन निर्मल एवं अत्यंत सुन्दर हो गया है, उसे ही ईश्वर मिला है। वह परम-सत्य समूचे संसार में प्रवृत्त है और भय एवं प्रेम सब उसका ही दिया हुआ है॥ ६॥

ਹੇ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ! ਤਦੋਂ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਬਣਾ ਜਦੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਖਸਮ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਕਰ ਲਏਂ, (ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ) ਮਤਾਂ ਖਸਮ ਸੇਜ ਤੇ ਆਵੇ ਹੀ ਨਾਹ ਤੇ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਐਵੇਂ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੀ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਏ। ਹੇ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ! ਜੇ ਖਸਮ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਮੰਨ ਜਾਏ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਬਣਿਆ ਸਮਝ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਾ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਕਬੂਲ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਖਸਮ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰੇ।
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ (ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿਣ) ਨੂੰ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਨ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਬਣਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਨੂੰ ਭੋਜਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਆਧਾਰ) ਬਣਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਨ ਮਨ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਪੂਰਨ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਦੀ ਹੈ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।੧।
ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੇ ਸੁਰਮਾ, ਫੁੱਲ ਤੇ ਪਾਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ, (ਪਰ ਜੇ) ਖਸਮ ਸੇਜ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਆਇਆ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਸਗੋਂ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਣ ਇਹ ਦੁਖਦਾਈ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ) ।੨।
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਭਉ ਊਪਜੈ ਭੈ ਭਾਇ ਰੰਗੁ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਤਾ ਰੰਗ ਸਿਉ ਹਉਮੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਮਾਰਿ ॥ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਅਤਿ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥ ਭਉ ਭਾਉ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥੯॥
