By the Grace of the Lord-sublime, Truth personified & attainable through the Guru's guidance.

Path Padheo Ar Bed Bichareo Nival Bhuangam Saadhhe ||
Panch Janaa Siu Sang N Shhuttkeo Adhhik Ahanbudhh Baadhhe ||1||
Piaare In Bidhh Milan N Jaaee Mai Kee_ey Karam Anekaa ||
Haar Pareo Suaamee Kai Duaarai Deejai Budhh Bibekaa || Rahaau ||

O, Brother! Having studied all the Vedas and Shastras along with meditation, or having performed all the Yogic exercises (by inhaling water inside and then blowing it out for purification) or straightening the snake~like tilted artery (for stopping breath) we could not get rid of our vicious thoughts or sinful actions like sexual desires.

Instead, we get engrossed in the worldly bondage of egoistic tendencies, and pride.
O, beloved Lord! We cannot get united with the Lord by practicing such rituals or formal religious practices.
I have performed various acts of this nature including certain rituals but to no useful purpose. (1)

O, Lord! May I be bestowed with the right type of thinking!
I have sought the support of the Lord finally, having failed to gain· peace of mind by practicing all the ten types of rituals. (Pause)
Then I practiced meditation in complete silence, making my body a utensil.
I practiced penance without sparing any effort, even roaming around the jungles naked and wandering all over the world including all the holy places of pilgrimage, but could not get rid of my worries and dua-mindedness. (2)

Man Kee Mail N Outrai Eh Bidhh Je Lakh Jatan Karaae ||3||

I settled down at holy places having high hopes, with the ritual of placing a brass saw on my head (to indicate sacrifice) but could not purify my mind (of vicious thoughts) in spite of many other formal observances (practices) of this nature. (3)

Ann Baster Bhoom Bahu Arpe Neh Mileeai Har Duaaraa ||4||

Then I gave away gold, wife, horses, and elephants in alms (to Brahmins) like a great benefactor, including distributing grains, clothes, and land in alms; but could not attain the Lord, as these acts are of no avail. (4)

Pooja Archaa Bandan Ddanddaut Khatt Karmaa Rat Rehtaa ||
Hau Hau Karat Bandhhan Meh Pareaa Neh Mileeai Eh Jugtaa ||5||

Then I worshipped various (stone) statues (idols) including gods and goddesses; by lying prostrate before the idols I did a lot of worship and developed a love of the six types of virtues. But all these efforts at uniting myself with the Lord were not successful as I was still caught in the bondage of egoism and l-am-ness. (5)

Jog Sidhh Aasan Chauraaseeh Ey Bhee Kar Kar Raheaa ||
Vaddee Aarjaa Fir Fir Janmai Har Siu Sang N Gaheaa ||6||

I have carried out the various Yogic exercises (eighty-four in number) for performing Yoga (in order to control the mind) which helped me to lengthen my span of life but could not help me out of the cycle of births and deaths; and notwithstanding all these efforts, I could not get united with the Lord. (6)

Raaj Leelaa Raajan Kee Rachnaa Kareaa Hukam Afaaraa ||
Sej Sohnee Chandan Choaa Narak Ghor Kaa Duaaraa ||7||

The hunting programs of the Kings or Rajas in going out on hunting (pleasures), expeditions, or building of gardens or palatial buildings with everyone carrying out their commands while ruling over a country as an independent King, could not lead them to peace.
They enjoyed the comforts of beautiful beds with the sprinkled fragrance of various scents along with many other modes of comforts, but all this led them to the doors of hell and all these actions were of no avail and were useless.
In fact, only the True Name of the Lord could bring peace and bliss of life, in the company of the holy saints. (7)

Har Keerat Saadhhsangat Hai Sir Karman Kai Karmaa ||
Kahu Naanak Tis Bhaeo Paraapat Jis Purab Likhe Kaa Lehnaa ||8||

The greatest service to the Lord would be to sing the praises of the Lord in the company of holy saints.
O, Nanak! Such virtuous deeds are performed by a person who is destined to gain the fruit of his earlier good deeds, and we could unite with him through the Guru's guidance. (8)

O, Lord! Your (slave) devotee is imbued with the love of the Lord and is always immersed in True Name.
Hey, Lord-benefactor, destroyer of the sufferings of the helpless (people)! The persons, who are blessed with Your Grace, are always engaged· in singing Your praises with love and devotion. (Pause-2)-1-3.

सोरठि महला ५ घरु २ असटपदीआ, ईश्वर एक है, जिसे सतगुरु की कृपा से पाया जा सकता है। मनुष्य ने अपने जीवन में विभिन्न पाठों का अध्ययन और वेदों का चिन्तन किया।
उसने योगासन श्वास-नियन्त्रण एवं कुण्डलिनी की साधना भी की किन्तु फिर भी उसका पाँचों विकारों-काम, क्रोध, लोभ, मोह एवं अहंकार से साथ नहीं छूटा अपितु वह अधिक अहंकार में ही बंध गया ॥ १॥ हे प्यारे ! मैंने भी ऐसे अनेक कर्म किए हैं। लेकिन इन विधियों द्वारा भगवान से मिलन नहीं होता, मैं हार-थक प्रभु के द्वार पर आ गया हूँ और उससे यही प्रार्थना करता हूँ कि हे जगत के स्वामी ! दया करके मुझे विवेक-बुद्धि दीजिए॥ रहाउ॥

मनुष्य मौन धारण करता है, अपने हाथों का ही पतल के रूप में प्रयोग करता है, वह वनों में नग्न भटकता है। तीथों के तटों सहित समस्त धरती में भ्रमण करता है परन्तु फिर भी उसकी दुविधा समाप्त नहीं होती॥ २॥

वह अपनी मनोकामना हेतु तीर्थ-स्थान पर जाकर भी बसता है, अपने सिर को आरे के नीचे भी रखवाता है। चाहे वह इस विधि के लाखों ही उपाय कर ले लेकिन फिर भी उसके मन की मैल दूर नहीं होती।॥ ३॥

मनुष्य दानी बनकर अनेक प्रकार के दान करता है, जैसे सोना, कन्या (दान), बहुमूल्य हाथी, घोड़े दान करता है। वह अन्न, वस्त्र एवं बहुत भूमि अर्पित करता है किन्तु फिर भी उसे इस तरह भगवान का द्वार नहीं मिलता ॥ ४॥

वह पूजा-अर्चना, दण्डवत प्रणाम, षट्-कर्म करने में भी लीन रहता है परन्तु फिर भी बड़ा अहंकार करता हुआ बन्धनों में ही पड़ता है। इन युक्तियों से भी उसे भगवान नहीं मिलता ॥ ५॥

योगियों एवं सिद्धों के चौरासी आसन मनुष्य यह भी कर करके हार ही जाता है। वह चाहे लम्बी उम्र ही प्राप्त कर ले परन्तु फिर भी निरंकार से मिलन न होने के कारण बार-बार जन्म लेता हुआ भटकता ही रहता है॥ ६॥

मनुष्य राजा बनकर शासन करता है और बड़ा ऐश्वर्य बनाता है, वह प्रजा पर हुक्म चलाता है। शरीर पर चंदन और इत्र लगाकर सुन्दर सेज पर सुख भोगता है परन्तु ये सभी सुख उसे घोर नरक की ओर ही धकेलते हैं।७॥

सभी कर्मो में सर्वोत्तम कर्म सत्संगति में सम्मिलित होकर हरि का कीर्तिगान करना है। नानक का कथन है कि सत्संगति की उपलब्धि भी उसे ही होती है, जिसके भाग्य में पूर्व जन्मों के कर्मो अनुसार ऐसा लिखा होता है॥ ८॥

हे परमात्मा ! तेरा सेवक तो इस रंग में ही मग्न है। दीनों के दुःख नाश करने वाला ईश्वर मुझ पर कृपालु हो गया है, जिससे यह मन अब उसका भजन करने में ही लीन रहता है॥ रहाउ दूसरा ॥ १॥ ३॥

ਰਾਗ ਸੋਰਠਿ, ਘਰ ੨ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਅੱਠ-ਬੰਦਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਬਾਣੀ। ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵੇਦ (ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕ ਨੂੰ) ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਿਵਲੀਕਰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਕੁੰਡਲਨੀ ਨਾੜੀ ਰਸਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਚਾੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਪਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਾਧਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਪੰਜਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਸਾਥ ਮੁੱਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ। (ਸਗੋਂ) ਵਧੀਕ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਬੱਝ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੇਰੇ ਵੇਖਦਿਆਂ ਲੋਕ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ (ਮਿਥੇ ਹੋਏ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਆ ਡਿੱਗਾ ਹਾਂ (ਤੇ ਅਰਜ਼ੋਈ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ-ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਭਲਾਈ ਬੁਰਾਈ ਦੀ) ਪਰਖ ਕਰ ਸਕਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਅਕਲ ਦੇਹ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਚੁੱਪ ਸਾਧੀ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਕਰ-ਪਾਤੀ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ (ਭਾਂਡਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੱਥ ਹੀ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੈ), ਕੋਈ ਜੰਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਨੰਗਾ ਤੁਰਿਆ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਰੇ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਰਟਨ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਸਾਰੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਦਾ ਭ੍ਰਮਣ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭੀ) ਮਨ ਦੀ ਡਾਂਵਾਂ-ਡੋਲ ਹਾਲਤ ਮੁੱਕਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ ॥੨॥

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਨੋ-ਕਾਮਨਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਜਾ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਹੈ, ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ (ਸ਼ਿਵ ਜੀ ਵਾਲਾ) ਆਰਾ ਰਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ) ਲੱਖਾਂ ਹੀ ਜਤਨ ਕਰੇ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭੀ ਮਨ ਦੀ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਹਿੰਦੀ ॥੩॥

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੋਨਾ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ, ਵਧੀਆ ਘੋੜੇ, ਵਧੀਆ ਹਾਥੀ (ਅਤੇ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ) ਕਈ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੱਪੜੇ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜ਼ਿਮੀਂ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭੀ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕੀਦਾ ॥੪॥

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇਵ-ਪੂਜਾ ਵਿਚ, ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਡੰਡਉਤ ਕਰਨ ਵਿਚ, ਛੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਉਹ ਭੀ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜਕੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕੀਦਾ ॥੫॥

ਜੋਗ-ਮਤ ਵਿਚ ਸਿੱਧਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਚੌਰਾਸੀ ਆਸਣ ਹਨ। ਇਹ ਆਸਣ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਥੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਮਰ ਤਾਂ ਲੰਮੀ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਦਾ, ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਕਈ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਰਾਜ-ਹਕੂਮਤ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ. ਰਾਜਿਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਠਾਠ-ਬਾਠ ਬਣਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਲੋਕਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਚਲਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕੋਈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਮੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ। ਸੁੰਦਰ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੀ ਸੇਜ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਉਤੇ) ਚੰਦਨ ਤੇ ਅਤਰ ਵਰਤਦੇ ਹਨ। ਪਰ ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਤਾਂ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਨਰਕ ਵਲ ਲੈ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨੀ-ਇਹ ਕੰਮ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ। ਪਰ, ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ - ਇਹ ਅਵਸਰ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਪੂਰਬਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਲੇਖ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਤੇਰਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਦੀਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਦਇਆਵਾਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੧॥੩॥
