2. Translation in English

Bilawal Mahala - 9 ( Man Ka Kahia Mansa Kare... )
O Brother! This man functions on the advice of his mind and then engages himself in virtuous or sinful actions. Thus this man, engrossed in the love of worldly falsehood and his egoism, does not get satiated. However, the persons, who are imbued with the love of True Name, get satiated and satisfied with it, and attain salvation finally. (1)

This man feels proud and egoistic by seeing his (beautiful) body, wealth, wife, and other possessions, whereas except for True Name none of these possessions will accompany the man after his death. (Pause-1)

This man then enjoys the worldly pleasures following the joy and interest of his mind, whereas after death all this wealth will belong to someone else while his body is reduced to ashes, and mingles with dust, which was created out of dust. His actions only accompany him to the next world, and the filth of his vicious and sinful actions cannot be purified without the Guru's guidance. (2)

All the tunes of his songs and the rhythm of his dances are all unreal and false. This man, so long he functions under the influence of the three-pronged Maya, is controlled by his vicious mind and goes through the cycle of births and deaths, and gets far removed from the Lord. The malady of the self-willed persons and their sufferings do not end whereas the Guru-minded persons by singing the praises of the Lord, get freed from this ailment and get emancipated from their sufferings. (3)

This man keeps up a beautiful appearance outwardly with a clean dhoti (dress) and vermillion mark on the forehead and carries a rosary around his neck, but all these things will be useless so long he is working with anger. If someone were to take instructions from the magician in the art of acquiring various forms of life (garbs), thus forgetful of True Name, he would join them to earn more wealth. (If someone gets engrossed in worldly falsehood (Maya) by forsaking True Name, he cannot have peace of mind). In fact, without the Guru's worship, no one could enjoy peace or bliss as such this man cannot be peaceful or comfortable. (4)

When someone turns his face away from the Guru, he is taken through the various forms of life (of animals) like pigs, dogs, asses or cats in the cycle of births and deaths. Thus this man is taken through the cycle of births and deaths, being engrossed in the love of the worldly falsehood (Maya) and its bondage. (5)

In fact, this man gains an invaluable wealth of knowledge through the service of the Guru, and he gains salvation by inculcating the love of the Lord in his heart. Then such a person is not required to account for his (worldly) actions in the Lord's presence (Lord's Court), because the persons following the Will of the Lord, get exempted from all the bondage in the Lord's Court. (6)

This person, if enabled to join the company of the holy saints along with the union of the Guru, realizes the True Lord and follows the dictates of the Lord as per His Will. The persons, who have realized the value of the Lord's Will, get an abode in the Lord's presence in the 'Abode of Truth.' Then they get emancipated from the cycle of births and deaths through the Guru's guidance (teachings), and attain salvation. (7)

Such a person, considering all worldly possessions as the boon of the Lord, through His Grace, becomes a selfless and detached person. Then he surrenders himself completely to the True Master, who had bestowed this body and mind on him, thus getting freed from the cycle of births and deaths. O Nanak! Such a Guru-minded person gets merged with the True Lord, being himself a follower of Truth. (8-2)

( Man Ka Kahia Mansa Kare... ) बिलावल महला १ ॥ जो मन कहता है, वही संकल्प करता है। यह मन ही पाप-पुण्य की बात कहता है। माया के नशे में मस्त होकर भी इसकी तृप्ति नहीं होती। यदि मन को सत्य भा जाए तो तृप्ति एवं मुक्ति हो जाती है॥ १॥

हे जीव ! देख ले, यह तन, धन एवं सुन्दर नारी सब अभिमान ही हैं और प्रभु नाम के बिना कुछ भी तेरे साथ नहीं जाना॥ १॥ रहाउ॥

मन की खुशी के लिए जीव कितने ही रसों का भोग करता है। लेकिन मरणोपरांत जीव का धन अन्य लोगों का हो जाता है और तन जलकर भस्म की ढेरी बन जाता है। मिट्टी का यह सारा प्रसार मिट्टी में ही मिल जाता है। शब्द के बेिना मन की मैल कभी नहीं उतरती ॥ २॥

अनेक प्रकार के गीत, राग एवं ताल इत्यादि सब झूठे हैं। त्रिगुणात्मक जीव उत्पन्न होते हैं और नाश होते रहते हैं तथा यह प्रभु मिलाप से दूर ही रहते हैं। द्वैतभाव में मनुष्य की दुर्मति एवं दर्द दूर नहीं होता। प्रभु का गुणगान रूपी औषधि से गुरुमुख छूट जाता है॥ ३॥

जो व्यक्ति उज्ज्वल धोती पहनता है, माथे पर तिलक लगाता है और गले में माला पहनता है, यदि उसके मन में क्रोध है तो समझो, वह नाट्यशाला में संवाद पढ़ रहा है। जिस ने नाम को भुलाकर माया रूपी मदिरा का पान किया है, उसे गुरु-भक्ति के बिना सुख उपलव्ध नहीं हुआ ॥ ४॥

वे सूअर, कुत्ते, गधे, बिल्ली, पशु, मलेच्छ एवं नीच चाण्डालों की योनियों में भटकते रहते हैं जो व्यक्ति गुरु से मुँह फेर लेते हैं, और बन्धनों में फँसकर जन्मते मरते रहते हैं।॥ ५॥

गुरु की सेवा करने से ही जीव को नाम-पदार्थ मिलता है और हृदय में नाम स्थित होने से वह सदा के लिए कृतार्थ हो जाता है। इस तरह सत्य के दरबार में उसके कर्मो की पूछताछ नहीं होती। जो व्यक्ति भगवान के हुक्म को मानता है, वही उसके दरबार में मंजूर हो जाता है।॥ ६॥

यदि मनुष्य को सतगुरु मिल जाए तो वह प्रभु को जान लेता है। जो उसकी रज़ा में रहता है, वही उसके हुक्म को पहचान लेता है, वह उसके हुक्म को पहचान कर सत्य के द्वार में निवास पा लेता है, शब्द द्वारा जन्म-मरण का नाश हो जाता है॥ ७ ॥

जो जगत् से निर्लिप्त रहता है, वह सबकुछ प्रभु का ही समझता है। वह अपना तन-मन उसे अर्पण कर देता है, जिसने उसे बनाया है हे नानक ! ऐसा व्यक्ति जन्म-मरण के चक्र से छूटकर परम सत्य में ही समा जाता है॥ ८ ॥ २॥

( Man Ka Kahia Mansa Kare... ) ਹੇ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ਜੀਵ! ਵੇਖ, ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ, ਇਹ ਧਨ, ਇਹ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ-ਇਹ ਸਭ (ਸਦਾ ਨਾਲ ਨਿਭਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਚੀਜ਼ (ਜੀਵ ਦੇ) ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।

(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ) ਬੁੱਧੀ (ਭੀ) ਮਨ ਦੇ ਕਹੇ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਇਹ ਮਨ ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਇਹੀ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਸੋਚਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ (ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਰਯਾਦਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ) ਪੁੰਨ ਕੀਹ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪਾਪ ਕੀਹ ਹੈ। ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਨਸ਼ੇ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ) ਰਜੇਵਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ। ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ ਰਜੇਵਾਂ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਏ।੧।

ਮਾਇਕ ਰਸਾਂ ਦੇ ਭੋਗ ਕਰੀਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੌਜਾਂ ਮਾਣੀਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, (ਪਰ ਮੌਤ ਆਉਣ ਤੇ) ਧਨ (ਹੋਰ) ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਦੀ ਢੇਰੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਹੀ ਪਸਾਰਾ (ਅੰਤ) ਖ਼ਾਕ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਮਨ ਉਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਇਕੱਠੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ) ਮੈਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਹਿੰਦੀ।੨।

(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਰਾਗ ਤੇ ਤਾਲ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਨ ਪਰਚਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਇਹ ਸਭ ਝੂਠੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਹਨ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵ) ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਸਰ ਹੇਠ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਮਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਗੀਤਾਂ ਰਾਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਜੀਵ ਦੀ) ਹੋਰ ਝਾਕ ਤੇ ਭੈੜੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਆਤਮਕ ਰੋਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ। (ਇਸ ਦੂਜੀ ਝਾਕ ਤੋਂ, ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਤੋਂ, ਆਤਮਕ ਰੋਗ ਤੋਂ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਹ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਹੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਰੋਗਾਂ ਦਾ) ਦਾਰੂ ਹੈ।

ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਚਿੱਟੀ ਧੋਤੀ ਪਹਿਨਦੇ ਹਨ (ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ) ਤਿਲਕ ਲਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਲਾ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ (ਵੇਦ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ) ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਪ੍ਰਬਲ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਉੱਦਮ ਇਉਂ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾਟ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ (ਨਾਟ-ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦੀ ਸਿਖਲਾਈ ਕਰ ਕਰਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ) ।

ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਪੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੋਵੇ, (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ) । ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ, ਤੇ ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ।੪।

ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਮੂੰਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਵਲੋਂ ਮੋੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੂਰ ਕੁੱਤੇ ਖੋਤੇ ਬਿੱਲੇ ਪਸ਼ੂ ਮਲੇਛ ਨੀਚ ਚੰਡਾਲ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭਵਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।੫।

ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਾਮ-ਸਰਮਾਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਜਾਤ੍ਰਾ ਵਿਚ) ਸਫਲ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਲੇਖਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਗਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇ ਕੋਈ ਬਾਕੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਨਿਕਲਦੀ) । ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ (ਸਿਰ ਮੱਥੇ) ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੬।

ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ (ਰਾਜ਼ੀ) ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਥਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ (ਦੇ ਗੇੜ) ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।੭।

(ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਲੋਂ) ਉਪਰਾਮ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਹਰੇਕ ਚੀਜ਼ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ (ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੋਈ) ਹੀ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।੧।

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬਚ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।੮।੨।
