Structure of Kirtan Sohila Sahib

Three Gurus, Guru Nanak, Guru Amar Das, and Guru Arjan, have contributed five shabads about the pain of being separated and celebrating the bliss of association, of being one. The first three shabads were spoken by Guru Nanak, the fourth Shabad by Guru Ram Das, and the fifth by Guru Arjan Dev. Together they form the nocturnal prayer that all Sikhs perform before they go to sleep.

It is the most harmonious Baani ever spoken. The Baani increases the sensitivity of the aura to protection, to such an extent that whatever negativity is removed miles. If you are threatened by danger of whatever kind, from direct or indirect sources, and if you want to protect yourself with the surrounding of the entire magnetic field of the earth, recite Kirtan Sohila. The religious and artistic value of these hymns is unsurpassed.

Five Hymns of Kirtan Sohila and their Importance

  • The first hymn visualizes the unification of the individual self with the final reality.
  • The second hymn shows us the unity of the final, despite an endless variety of writings, teachers, and philosophies.
  • The third hymn rejects all forms of external piety and ritual and paints a lively image of the entire Cosmos in harmonious worship. Instead of scales with lamps on them, incense, and other sacrifices, the heavens themselves are a reintegrated dish, with the sun and the moon as lamps, the stars like pearls, and all vegetation a sacrifice of flowers. Loud ritual singing is replaced by the inner, loose melody that plays without movement.
  • The fourth hymn in the Sohila comes from the fourth guru and explains the importance of the divine name, which announces all suffering and transmigration.
  • The fifth hymn, from Guru Arjan Dev, celebrates life here in this world: we must use this wonderful opportunity to serve others and earn divine value. The unknown mystery is revealed to the enlightened person who then enjoys the bliss and freedom of immortality.

The Kirtan Sohila is also canceled in cremations and can be found on pages 12 and 13 of the writings of Guru Granth Sahib.
