English Translation

Asa Mahala - 5 Slok ( Udam Karo Vadbhagiho... ) O, fortunate Guru-minded persons! Make an effort to get up and recite the Lord's True Name. O Nanak! As a result of this meditation of True Name, we will attain all sorts of comforts and joy by dispelling all our sufferings, doubts, and lethargy.

Chhant: friend! We would never be lethargic or hesitate in reciting Lord's True Name and remember the True Lord in the company of holy saints so that we could escape the dragnet of the god of death (Yama). In fact, by reciting the Lord's True Name one always attains the bliss of life, while getting rid of all sufferings and fear complex (of death). O, Brother! Let us remember the Lord, our True Master, in every breath of life and recite His True Name with love and devotion (with the tongue). O Lord-benefactor! You are the fountainhead of all virtues. Pray to keep us engaged in Your service through Your Grace. O Nanak! My earnest prayer to the Lord is that He may keep us at His lotus feet engaged in the recitation of True Name, without any lethargic tendencies. (1)

O, Brother! The Lord's True Name is beyond the effect of worldly falsehood (Maya) and purifies sinners like us. The collyrium of the Lord's knowledge is so effective that it removes all our (mind's) ignorance, doubts, or dual-mindedness, resulting in inner enlightenment through knowledge. By using the collyrium of knowledge from the Lord Absolute in the company of the Guru we get all the information about the Lord, who pervades all the lands, Seas, and Skies or Earth. If one could inculcate a love of the Lord in one's heart even for a moment, one rids oneself of all shortcomings or cribbings.

The Lord Almighty is in fact beyond our comprehension and always enables us to shed our fear complex (for death). O Nanak! My earnest request and prayer to the Lord are that I may always recite Lord's True Name, by seeking refuge at the lotus feet of the Lord, who is our greatest purifier, and whose True Name purifies us of all our ills and misgivings. (2)

O Lord-benefactor of all virtues! I have sought Your refuge and support of Your lotus feet and now I find all the worldly achievements and pleasures within my reach through Your support. O, Lord! You are the cause and effect and doer of all our actions and in the company of holy saints alone, sinners like us, get pardoned.

Hey Lord! You are responsible for enabling us to cross this ocean of life successfully and many persons have attained salvation through meditation of Your True Name. O Fathomless Lord! You are eternally established whether at the beginning of Time or during the end of this age, (world) and many saints are always in Your search, and many have attained salvation by listening to Your True Name in the company of holy saints. O Nanak! I have sought the support of the Lord benefactor, as I have always meditated on the True Name of the Lord, who is the fountain-head of Grace. (3)

O, Lord! You always protect Your saints, as that is Your practice, which You have started Yourself. Wherever Your saints are trying to recite Your Name, You appear in person, and You have merged Your saints with Yourself in the state of equipoise, completing all their functions. O, Lord! You have cast away all their sufferings by singing Your praises and they have experienced the bliss of life with this knowledge. The Lord has shown all His brilliance and wonders in the Four directions or ten sides. O Nanak! I remember the Lord by taking refuge at His lotus feet, and meditating on True Name while He protects us due to our love and devotion, and that is His convention (moral function)! (4-3-6)

आसा महला ५ ॥ श्लोक ( Udam Karo Vadbhagiho... )
हे भाग्यशाली जीवो! थोड़ा-सा उद्यम करो एवं जगत के मालिक परमात्मा को याद करो। हे नानक ! उस प्रभु का सिमरन करने से सर्व सुख प्राप्त होते हैं तथा दु:ख, दर्द एवं भ्रम दूर हो जाते हैं।॥ १॥

छंद ॥ गोविन्द का नाम जपने में आलस्य नहीं करना चाहिए। साधु की संगति में रहने से यमपुरी नहीं जाना पड़ता। प्रभु का नाम याद करने से प्राणी सदा सुखी रहता है और उसे दुःख-दर्द एवं भय नहीं सताते। हे बन्धु ! हरेक श्वास के साथ हरि-परमेश्वर की आराधना करते रहो और मुख एवं मन से प्रभु को ही याद करो। हे अमृत के घर ! हे गुणों के भण्डार ! हे कृपालु एवं दयालु प्रभु ! दया करके मुझे अपनी सेवा-भक्ति में लगाओ। नानक प्रार्थना करता है कि हे प्रभु! मैं तेरे चरणों में ही पड़ता हूँ और तेरे चरणों की ही पूजा करता हूँ। गोविन्द का नाम-जपने में आलस्य नहीं करना चाहिए॥ १॥

निरंजन प्रभु का पुनीत नाम पतितों को पावन करने वाला है। गुरु के ज्ञान का सुरमा भ्रम के अन्धेरे का विनाश कर देता है। गुरु के ज्ञान का सुरमा यह ज्ञान प्रदान करता है कि निरंजन प्रभु जल, धरती एवं गगन में हर जगह समाया हुआ है। जिस मनुष्य के हृदय में प्रभु एक क्षण भर के लिए निवास कर लेता है, उसके दुःख-संताप मिट जाते हैं। जगत का स्वामी प्रभु अगाध ज्ञान वाला है और वह सब कुछ करने में समर्थ है तथा सभी के भय नाश करने वाला है। नानक प्रार्थना करता है और प्रभु-चरणों की पूजा करता है। निरंजन प्रभु का पुनीत नाम पतितों को पावन करने वाला है॥ २॥

मैंने कृपानिधि दयालु गोपाल की ओट ली है। हे प्रभु ! मुझे तेरे चरणों का सहारा है और तेरी ही शरण में मेरी सफलता है। सब कुछ करने एवं कराने वाले जगत के स्वामी हरि के चरणों में लगकर पतितों का उद्धार हो जाता है। भगवान का नाम ही भयानक संसार-सागर से पार करने वाला है और उसका नाम-सुमिरन करके बहुत सारे जीव पार हो गए हैं। आदि से अंत तक बेअंत लोग ईश्वर को खोजते रहे हैं लेकिन मैंने सुना है कि संतों की संगत ही मुक्ति का मार्ग है। नानक वन्दना करता है कि मैं प्रभु-चरणों की आराधना करता हूँ और कृपानिधि, दयालु गोपाल प्रभु की ओट ली है॥ ३॥

भक्तवत्सल हरि ने अपना विरद् आप बनाया है। जहाँ कहीं भी संतजन प्रभु की आराधना करते हैं, वह वही प्रगट हो जाता है। यह अपने भक्तों को सहज-स्वभाव ही अपने साथ मिला लेता है और उनके सभी कार्य सम्पूर्ण कर देता है। प्रभु के यश में वह आनंद एवं महा मंगल को पाते हैं और सभी दु:खों को भूल जाते हैं। एक प्रभु का चमत्कार एवं प्रकाश वह दसों दिशाओं में देखते हैं। नानक वन्दना करता है कि मैं प्रभु के चरणों की आराधना करता हूँ।प्रभु ने भक्त वत्सल होने का अपना विरद् आप बनाया है॥ ४॥ ३॥ ६॥

Punjabi Translation

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ–) ( Udam Karo Vadbhagiho... ) ਹੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਿਓ! ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਹਰੇਕ ਕਿਸਮ ਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਦਰਦ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹੋ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ) ਉੱਦਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹੋ।1।

ਛੰਤ। ਹੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀਹੋ! ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਿਆਂ (ਕਦੇ) ਆਲਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਿਆਂ (ਤੇ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆਂ) ਜਮ ਦੀ ਪੁਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ। ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਿਆਂ ਕੋਈ ਦੁੱਖ ਕੋਈ ਦਰਦ ਕੋਈ ਡਰ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ, ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੀ ਰਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਹਰੇਕ ਸਾਹ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਅਰਾਧਨਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹੁ, ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਮਰ, ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ (ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਉਚਾਰ।

ਹੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਦੇ ਸੋਮੇ! ਹੇ ਦਇਆ ਦੇ ਘਰ! ਹੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਮੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ) ਦਇਆ ਕਰ (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ) ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ। ਨਾਨਕ (ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ) ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਿਆਂ ਕਦੇ ਆਲਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ।1।

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ, ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਡਿੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੀ ਹੋਈ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ (ਇਕ ਐਸਾ) ਸੁਰਮਾ ਹੈ (ਜੋ ਮਨ ਦੀ) ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੇ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਸੁਰਮਾ (ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ (ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਭੀ) ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅੱਖ ਦੇ ਫਰਕਣ ਜਿੰਨੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਲਈ ਭੀ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਚਿੰਤਾ-ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਅਥਾਹ ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ, ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਨ ਜੋਗਾ ਹੈ, ਸਭ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ, ਸਭ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ, ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਡੁੱਬੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।2।

ਹੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦੇ ਪਾਲਣਹਾਰ! ਹੇ ਦਇਆ ਦੇ ਸੋਮੇ! ਹੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਓਟ ਲਈ ਹੈ। ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਹੀ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਹੈ। ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਕਾਮਯਾਬੀ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਹੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਹੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਮੂਲ! ਤੇਰੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਡਿੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਚਾਣ-ਜੋਗਾ ਹੈ, ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਜਨਮ-ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਘੁੰਮਣ-ਘੇਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਣ ਜੋਗਾ ਹੈ। ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਬੰਦੇ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।

ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਗਤ-ਰਚਨਾ ਦੇ ਆਰੰਭ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਹੈਂ, ਅੰਤ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ (ਅਸਥਿਰ) ਹੈਂ। ਬੇਅੰਤ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰੀ ਭਾਲ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਤੇਰੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਹੀ ਇਕ ਐਸਾ ਤਰੀਕਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਗੋਪਾਲ! ਹੇ ਦਇਆਲ! ਹੇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਪੱਲਾ ਫੜਿਆ ਹੈ।3।

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਭਗਤੀ (ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ) ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣਾ ਇਹ ਮੁੱਢ-ਕਦੀਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, (ਸੋ,) ਜਿੱਥੇ ਜਿੱਥੇ (ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਸੰਤ (ਉਸ ਦਾ) ਆਰਾਧਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉੱਥੇ ਉੱਥੇ ਉਹ ਜਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣੇ ਭਗਤ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਲੀਨ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਆਪਣੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਵਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਭਗਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹਰਿ-ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦੀ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਭੁਲਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨੂਰ ਦੀ ਝਲਕ ਜੋਤਿ ਦਾ ਚਾਨਣ ਦਸੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ (ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ) ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਤੇ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਭਗਤੀ (ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ) ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣਾ ਇਹ ਮੁੱਢ-ਕਦੀਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।4।3।6।
