1. English Translation

Nigunia No Aape Bakhsh Laye Bhaa-ee Satgur Kee Sevaa Laai ||
Satgur Kee Sevaa Ootam Hai Bhaa-ee Raam Naam Chit Laai ||1||
Har Jeeo Aape Bakhsi Milaa-e ||
Gunheen Ham Apraadhee Bhaa-ee Poorai Satgur Lae Ralaa-e || Rahaa-o ||

O Brother! The Lord bestows His pardon to the persons, who are virtueless and without any good qualities, by helping them to serve the True Guru. O Brother! The service of the Guru is of the highest order as through this service one could develop love and devotion for the Lord. (1)
O Brother! The Lord bestows True Name on us and enables us to unite with Him, whereas we are sinners of the worst type having no virtues at all; but the Guru has enabled us to unite with Him. (Pause)
O dear friend! We cannot even comprehend (count) the number of sinners who have been pardoned by the Lord, by following the Guru's true teachings. O Brother! Most of the devotees have been enabled to cross this ocean of life successfully through the raft of True Name. (2)
O Brother! Some of these sinners have been transformed completely like converting iron into gold because they have been brought into the company of the Guru, who functions like the Paras stone (gold-stone).
O Brother! They have gotten over their egoism and inculcated the True Name in their hearts so that the Lord has merged their souls with His Prime-soul. (3)
O Brother! I offer myself as a sacrifice to the Guru, the True Guru, who has bestowed the treasure of True Name on me. So I have been united with the Lord in a state of equipoise through the Guru's guidance. (4)
O Brother! We cannot gain any knowledge even without the guidance of the Guru, which could be verified by all learned people.
O Brother! Let us serve the True Guru by getting rid of our egoism from within. (5)
O Brother! It is through the Guru's instructions (teachings) only that the Lord's wonder-awe is developed so that all the chores which we perform under the Guru's guidance and the Lord's fear and love are worthwhile and true. O Brother! We could attain the invaluable True Name through the development of love for the Lord. (6)
O Brother! I would fall at the lotus feet of such persons who serve the True Guru. O Brother! Such Guru-minded persons have made a success of this human life, thus helping their whole dynasty (clan), by getting blessings of the Lord. (7)
O Brother! The Guru's Word (Gurbani) is true and the Guru's teachings are also truthful, but this guidance follows Guru's Grace only. O Nanak! Whosoever attains True Name and inculcates it in his heart, does not come to grief at all. (8-2)

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਣਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਵਿਚ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ-ਸੇਵਾ ਬੜੀ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ (ਸ਼ਰਨ ਪਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ) ਮਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਹਾਂ, ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਹਾਂ ॥ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ) ਰਲਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਜੋੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਅਪਰਾਧੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ) ਵਿਚਾਰ ਵਿਚ (ਜੋੜ ਕੇ) ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿਆ ਹੈ ॥ ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ (ਸ਼ਬਦ-) ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਵਿਚ ਚਾੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ (ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਇਆ ਹੈ ॥੨॥

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਰਸ-ਗੁਰੂ (ਆਪਣੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ) ਮਿਲਾ ਕੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਜੋੜ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੜੇ ਹੋਏ ਲੋਹੇ ਤੋਂ ਸੋਨਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਗੁਰੂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੈਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜਿਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੪॥

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਪੁੱਛ ਲਵੋ, (ਇਹੀ ਉੱਤਰ ਮਿਲੇਗਾ ਕਿ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ॥ (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ,) ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਤੂੰ ਭੀ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ ॥੫॥

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰਿਆਂ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ (ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੀ) ਕਰਨ-ਜੋਗ ਕੰਮ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਕੰਮ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹੀ ਕੰਮ (ਸਭ ਤੋਂ) ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ ॥ ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਇਸ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦਾ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਧਨ ਲੱਭ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ) ਆਸਰਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਖ਼ਾਨਦਾਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੭॥

ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ (ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ) ਹੈ, ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ (ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦੀ) ਹੈ, ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ) ਕੋਈ ਔਕੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਾਪਰਦੀ ॥੮॥੨॥

3. हिन्दी सरलार्थ

( Nigunia No Aape Bakhsh Laye )
जो गुणहीन हैं, जिन्हें किसी गुण का ज्ञान नहीं है, भगवान उन्हें स्वयं अपनी कृपा से सतगुरु की सेवा में लगा देते हैं। सतगुरु की सेवा उच्चतम है क्योंकि यह मन को राम के नाम में लगाती है। हे प्रभु, कृपया हमें अपने में मिलाओ। हम दोषी और गुणहीन हैं, परन्तु पूर्ण सतगुरु ने हमें अपने में मिला लिया है। (विश्राम)

कौन कौन से अपराधी को प्रभु ने क्षमा किया है, यह सच शब्द द्वारा विचारना चाहिए। सतगुरु की नाव पर चढ़ाकर संसार सागर को पार उतारा है। मलिन मन से स्वर्ण बने हैं, गुरु के स्पर्श से उन्हें शुद्ध कर दिया गया है। अपने अहंकार को छोड़कर, राम का नाम मन में बसाया है और आत्मा को परमात्मा से मिलाया है।

मैं बलिहारी जाता हूँ, सतगुरु के सदके हूँ। उन्होंने मुझे नाम का खजाना दिया है और गुरु की शिक्षा से सहज अवस्था में स्थापित किया है। गुरु के बिना सहज अवस्था नहीं प्राप्त होती। ज्ञानियों से पूछो। सतगुरु की सेवा सदा करते रहो और अपने अहंकार को मिटाओ।

गुरु की शिक्षा से भय उत्पन्न होता है, और यह भय करना सच्ची सार्थकता है। प्रेम का खजाना प्राप्त होता है और सच्चा नाम ही आधार होता है। जो अपने सतगुरु की सेवा करते हैं, मैं उनके चरणों में लगना चाहता हूँ। वे अपने जन्म को सफल करते हैं और अपने कुल को भी मुक्त कराते हैं।

सच्ची वाणी और सच्चा शब्द गुरु की कृपा से ही प्राप्त होता है। नानक कहते हैं, हरि का नाम मन में बसा रहता है और उसे कोई विघ्न नहीं लगता।
