English Translation

Slok Mahalla Teeja ( Parthai Sakhi Maha Purkh Bolde ) The great and noble persons always impart their teachings concerning certain particular situations, though those instructions are meant for the whole world, and applicable to all men. The Guru-minded person gets imbued with love by listening to these teachings and attains self-realization. When such a person attains extreme humility through the Guru's guidance and behaves like a dead person (unaffected by praise or slander) according to worldly standards, then he attains peace and tranquility of mind. O, Nanak! What knowledge can be gained by such persons, who do not develop faith and love for the Guru in their hearts? (1)

Mahalla 3rd: The persons, who have not meditated on the Lord in the company of the holy saints (Guru-minded persons), undergo a lot of suffering at the time of death (in the end) since such blind, ignorant, and faithless persons have not realized Truth either within or without (their hearts) O, (Pandit) learned Man! The whole world benefits from the fun and Grace experiences of those imbued with the love of the Lord. Such Guru-minded persons, who have sung the praises of the Lord through the Guru's Word are always immersed in the (love of the) Lord.

O, Pandit! Neither is there any gain from practicing dual-mindedness nor from attaining the Lord's true name. (the real. wealth). Such self-willed persons have tired themselves out with their studies (of the Vedas) without gaining peace and tranquillity of mind, and spend their lives (days and nights) burning within themselves due to egoism, without any peace of mind. No one hears their cries and wails, as they cannot get rid of their whims and fancies (dual-mindedness) or misgivings. O, Nanak! Such faithless persons proceed to the Lord's presence, (leaving this world (with blackened faces) disgusted and dishonoured completely. (2)

Pouri: O, beloved Lord! May we be enabled to join the company of such (holy saints) dear friends (who would guide us on the right path)! I would seek their advice towards following the right path towards the Lord's attainment, and I would offer myself as a sacrifice to such persons and then join them reciting True Name as my co-partners and companions. I would always serve my beloved Lord as one could enjoy the bliss of life through this service only. I would surrender myself completely (as a sacrifice) to such a True Guru, who has enabled me to realize this truth (the Lord's secret). (12)

सलोक मः ३ ॥ परथाए साखी महा पुरख बोलदे साझी सगल जहानै ॥ गुरमुख होए सु भौ करे आपणा आप पछाणै ॥ गुर परसादी जीवत मरै ता मन ही ते मन मानै ॥ जिन कौ मन की परतीत नाही नानक से क्या कथहि ज्ञानै ॥१॥ मः ३ ॥ गुरमुख चित न लायो अंति दुख पहुता आए ॥ अंदरहु बाहरहु अंधिआं सुध न काई पाए ॥ पंडित तिन की बरकती सभ जगत खाए जो रते हरि नाए ॥ जिन गुर कै सबद सलाहिआ हरि सिउ रहे समाए ॥ पंडित दूजै भाए बरकत न होवई ना धन पलै पाए ॥ पड़ थके संतोख न आयो अनदिन जलत विहाए ॥ कूक पूकार न चुकई ना संसा विचहु जाए ॥ नानक नाम विहूणिआ मुहि कालै उठि जाए ॥२॥ पौड़ी ॥ हरि सजण मेल प्यारे मिल पंथ दसाई ॥ जो हर दसे मित तिस हौ बल जाई ॥ गुण साझी तिन सिउ करी हरि नाम धयाई ॥ हरि सेवी प्यारा नित सेव हरि सुख पाई ॥ बलिहारी सतिगुर तिस जिन सोझी पाई ॥१२॥

श्लोक महला ३॥ महापुरुष किसी विशेष के संबंध में शिक्षा की बात बोलते हैं परन्तु उनकी शिक्षा जहान के सब लोगों के लिए होती है। जो व्यक्ति गुरुमुख बन जाता है, वह भगवान का भय मानता है और अपने आपको पहचान लेता है। यदि गुरु की कृपा से मनुष्य जीवित ही मोह की ओर से विरक्त हो जाए तो उसके मन की मन से संतुष्टि हो जाती है। हे नानक ! जिनके मन में आस्था ही नहीं, वे फिर कैसे ज्ञान की बातें कथन कर सकते हैं ? ॥ १॥

महला ३॥ जो व्यक्ति गुरु के सान्निध्य में रहकर अपना चित भगवान के साथ नहीं लगाता, वह अन्त में बहुत दुःखी होता है। वह तो भीतर एवं बाहर से अन्धा ही है और उसे कोई सूझ नहीं पड़ती। हे पण्डित ! जो हरि-नाम में मग्न हैं, समूचा जगत उनकी साधना के फलस्वरूप ही खा रहा है। जो गुरु के शब्द द्वारा स्तुति करते हैं, वे भगवान में ही समाए रहते हैं।

हे पण्डित ! द्वैतभाव के कारण कदापि बरकत नहीं होती और न ही नाम धन प्राप्त होता है। विद्वान धर्मग्रंथ पढ़-पढ़कर थक गए हैं, परन्तु फिर भी संतोष नहीं आया और अपना जीवन रात-दिन ईष्यग्नि में जलते हुए ही व्यतीत कर दिया है। उनकी चिल्लाहट एवं शिकायतें समाप्त नहीं होती और न ही उनके मन से संशय दूर होता है। हे नानक ! नाम से विहीन व्यक्ति निंदा के पात्र बनकर संसार से चले जाते हैं॥ २ ॥ पउड़ी॥

हे प्यारे हरि ! मेरा सज्जन (गुरु) से मिलन करवा दो, उससे मिलकर मैं तेरा मार्ग पूँछूगा । जो मित्र मुझे भगवान के बारे में मार्गदर्शन करेगा, मैं उस पर कुर्बान जाता हूँ। मैं उसके साथ उसके गुणों का भागीदार बन जाऊँगा और हरि-नाम का भजन करूँगा। मैं नित्य ही अपने प्यारे हरि की आराधना करता हूँ और हरि की आराधना करने से मुझे सुख की अनुभूति होती है। मैं उस सतगुरु पर बलिहारी जाता हूँ, जिसने मेरे भीतर सूझ प्रदान की है॥ १२॥

ਮਹਾਂ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਵਿਚ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦਾ ਬਚਨ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਹਨ (ਪਰ ਉਹ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ) ਸਾਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਲਈ ਸਾਂਝੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਸੁਣ ਕੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਡਰ (ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਧਾਰਨ) ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਦੀ ਖੋਜ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ ਉਦਾਸ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਵਿਚ ਪਤੀਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਬਾਹਰ ਭਟਕਣੋਂ ਹਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) । ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪਤੀਜਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਲਾਭ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ।੧।

ਮਃ ੩ ॥ ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ (ਹਰੀ ਵਿਚ) ਮਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੋੜਿਆ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਦੁੱਖ ਵਾਪਰਦਾ ਹੈ; ਉਹਨਾਂ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰੋਂ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ । (ਪਰ) ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ! ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਸਾਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਹਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੀਨ ਹਨ ।

ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ! ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ (ਫਸੇ ਰਿਹਾਂ) ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ (ਆਤਮਿਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਧਦਾ-ਫੁਲਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ) ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ; ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਥੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਤੇ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ (ਉਮਰ) ਸੜਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਗੁਜ਼ਰਦੀ ਹੈ; ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਲਾ-ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰੀ ਮੁੱਕਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ । ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਾਲੇ-ਮੂੰਹ ਹੀ (ਸੰਸਾਰ ਤੋਂ) ਉੱਠ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।

ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਮਿਲਾ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਰਾਹ ਪੁੱਛਾਂ। ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਹਰੀ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ (ਦੀ ਖ਼ਬਰ) ਦੱਸੇ, ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਭਿਆਲੀ ਪਾਵਾਂ ਤੇ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਾਂ। ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਹਰੀ ਸਿਮਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ ਸੁਖ ਲਵਾਂ।ਮੈਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ) ਸਮਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੀ ਹੈ।੧੨।
