English Translation

Slok Mahalla 3

( Darvesi Ko Jansi Virla Ko Darves )

O, Brother! There would be very few true saints, who know everything worthwhile about saintliness. The life of a person, who visits all the householders begging for alms, deserves condemnation and his conduct or dress is also worthless to be condemned. O, Nanak! I would offer myself as a sacrifice to such a Guru-minded person and wash his lotus feet, who begs for the Lord's True Name instead, having rid himself of all his worldly desires and hopes including all his misgivings or dual-mindedness.

Mahalla 3rd

O, Nanak! Our body is like a tree, with the twin fruits of suffering and comforts (joy and sorrow) along with the flowers of our actions, while two birds in the form of Guruminded and self-willed persons are perched on this tree. No one could see the movements of these birds when they come and when or whither they go, moreover, their wings have been clipped. One bird (self-willed) enjoys worldly pleasures while the other one (Guru-minded) remains immersed in the Guru's Word and is free from worldly bondage.

(There are two types of men in this world, when they live under the Lord's Will, without having any say and when they are born or when they face death is not known to anyone, as it is all controlled by the Lord's Will. The Guru-minded persons remain immersed in True Name while the self-willed persons enjoy worldly pleasures). O, Nanak! There are some Guru-minded persons, who are fortunate and pre-destined by the Lord's Will, who remain imbued with the love of the Lord and follow the true path of the Lord's love and devotion as per their past actions. (1)

Pouri

The Lord is everything Himself; He is the Earth and the seed sown therein by the farmer and Himself is the farmer who grows this food and then grinds it Himself, then cooks this food, and then He eats this food having served it by himself in the utensils. Lord Himself is the water or the person who cleanses the mouth with the water.

He enables the holy saints to attend the serving of food with respect and honor and then after serving them with food, He alone makes them depart with all the respect due to them. Everything is happening as per the orders or dictates of the Lord as per the Lord's Will; but it is the Guru-minded person alone, who is bestowed by the Lord with the strength and realization to follow the Lord's Will, through the Grace of the Lord. English Translation 2

Sloka Mahalla III

It is arare recluse who realises what is renunciation.’
He who goes begging from door to door,
Accursed is his life, accursed his sartorial manifestation.
The devotee who is free from desires and anxiety
And begs for the Name Divine,
His feet should be propitiated,
Says Nanak, sacrifice unto him is everything mine. (1)

Mahalla III

Says Nanak, there is a single tree with fruit
On which two birds have come to roost.
One can watch them not coming and going,
Nor do they have any wings to boost.
One is involved in rejoicing, the other is attuned to the Holy Word.
Says Nanak, they get absorbed in the essence of Divine fruit,
Who has the banner of His grace unfurled. (2)

Pauri

Himself He is the soil, Himself the cultivator,
He Himself grows crops and Himself gets the grain ground.
Himself He cooks, Himself serves in dishes,
He Himself eats sitting on the ground.
Himself He serves water, offers a toothpick
And helps rinse the teeth around.
Himself He gets together the holy,
Himself taking their leave He is found.
He on whom He is gracious Himself,
He is with His ordinance bound. (6)

ਅਰਥ: ( Darvesi Ko Jansi Virla Ko Darves )

ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਫ਼ਕੀਰ ਫ਼ਕੀਰੀ (ਦੇ ਆਦਰਸ਼) ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਫ਼ਕੀਰ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਜੇ ਘਰ ਘਰ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਫਿਰੇ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹਦੇ ਜੀਊਣ ਨੂੰ ਫਿਟਕਾਰ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ (ਫ਼ਕੀਰੀ-) ਜਾਮੇ ਨੂੰ ਫਿਟਕਾਰ ਹੈ।

ਜੇ (ਦਰਵੇਸ਼ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਆਸਾ ਤੇ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਵੇ ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਭਿਖਿਆ ਮੰਗੇ, ਤਾਂ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ ਧੋਣੇ ਚਾਹੀਦੇ ਹਨ।੧।

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸੰਸਾਰ ਰੂਪ) ਰੁੱਖ (ਹੈ, ਇਸ) ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਰੂਪ) ਇਕ ਫਲ (ਲੱਗਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ) , (ਉਸ ਰੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ) ਦੋ (ਕਿਸਮ ਦੇ, ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਮਨਮੁਖ) ਪੰਛੀ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪੰਛੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਖੰਭ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ, (ਭਾਵ, ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਜੀਵ-ਪੰਛੀ ਕਿਧਰੋਂ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਕਿਧਰ ਚਲੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ) ਬਹੁਤੇ ਰੰਗਾਂ (ਵਿਚ ਸੁਆਦ ਲੈਣ) ਵਾਲੇ ਨੇ ਰਸਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਨਿਰ-ਚਾਹ (ਪੰਛੀ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ (ਲੀਨ) ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ (ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ) ਸੱਚਾ ਟਿੱਕਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਰਸ (ਰੂਪ) ਫਲ (ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ) ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹਨ।੨।

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਭੁਇਂ ਹੈ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਵਾਹੁਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਅੰਨ) ਉਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪਿਹਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਪਕਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਭਾਂਡੇ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਵਰਤਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਹਿ ਕੇ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਲ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਛਿੰਗਾ ਭੀ ਆਪ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਚੁਲੀ ਕਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਹਰੀ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਦ ਕੇ ਬਿਠਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਵਿਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਦਇਆਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ (ਮਿੱਠੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਮਨਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੬।

श्लोक महला ३

कोई विरला दरवेश ही दरवेशी की महत्ता को जानता है। यदि दरवेश बनकर कोई घर घर जाकर दान भिक्षा माँगता रहता है तो उसके जीवन एवं वेश को महा धिक्कार है। यदि वह आशा एवं चिन्ता को छोड़ देता है और गुरुमुख बनकर परमात्मा के नाम की भिक्षा माँगता है तो," हमें उसके चरणों को धोना चाहिए, हे नानक ! हम उस पर बलिहारी जाते है ॥ १ ॥

महला ३

हे नानक ! यह दुनिया एक ऐसा पेड़ है, जिस पर मोह-माया रूपी एक फल लगा हुआ है, इस पेड़ पर गुरमुख तथा मनमुख रूपी दो पक्षी बैठे है, जिसके पंख भी नहीं है, और आते-जाते समय नजर नहीं आते। मनमुख बहुरंगी रस भोगता रहता है किन्तु गुरुमुख शब्द में निलिप्त रहता है। हे नानक ! परमेश्वर के करन (प्रारब्ध) द्वारा जिसके ललाट पर सच्चा चिन्ह लगा है, वह हरि के नाम रस रुपी फल में लीन रहते हैं। २॥

पौड़ी

परमात्मा आप ही धरती है और आप ही उस धरती पर कृषि करने वाला कृषक है, वह आ ही अनाज को उगता है और आप ही पिसवाता है, वह आप ही अन्न को पकाता है ; आप है ही बर्तन देकर उन (बर्तनों) पर भोजन परोसता है और आप ही बैठकर भोजन खाता है। वह आप ही जल है, आप ही दांत कुरेदने वाला तिनका प्रदान करता है और आप ही चुल्ली करने को जान देता है। वह आप ही मण्डली को आमंत्रित करके विराजमान और आप ही उसे विदा भी करता है। जिस जीव पर परमेश्वर आप कृपालु होता है, उसी से अपना हुक्म मनवाता है।६॥
