A Brief History of Bandi Chhor Divas
Bandi Chhor Divas symbolizes the release of the 6th guru of Sikhs - Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji from the Gwalior Fort where he was imprisoned for many years by Mughal Emperor Jahangir. However, historically, this was not the day of Diwali when he returned to holy shrine of Amritsar but decades after the actual incident, Sikhs started celebrating the day on the same day Diwali occurs in the Indian subcontinent.
Emperor Jahangir had captured not just Guru Hargobind Ji, but detained 52 other Hindu Princes as well for various unknown reasons. After the intervention of many courtiers and wise persons, Jahangir was convinced to release Guru Hargobind Sahib. Fellow princes who have been enjoying the divine company of Guru for the past few years asked Guru to not leave them behind but take out with him. So Guru Sahib denied the order of release and delivered a message to Emperor he would leave with his follow prisoners only.
Somehow Jahangir responded weirdly that Guru Hargobind Sahib can take as many prisoners out who can hold him while getting out of narrow door of cell. Someone solved this problem by sewing a dress of Guru Hargobind with 52 strips of different lengths so each one of 52 princes could hold a strip while Guru Sahib would step out of the cell. This way everyone became free of prison.
