Satguru Nanak Pargateya Shabad Lyrics

When the darkness of ignorance covered the world, the divine light of truth descended through the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Guru of the Sikhs. The sacred phrase “Satguru Nanak Pargateya” means “The True Guru, Nanak, has manifested.” It signifies not just a physical birth but the awakening of divine wisdom and truth.

This verse originates from Vaaran Bhai Gurdas Ji, Vaar 1, Pauri 27 — one of the most revered interpretations of Sikh philosophy. Bhai Gurdas Ji beautifully encapsulates how the appearance of Guru Nanak dispelled the darkness of falsehood and ignorance, just like the sun dispels the night.

Guru Nanak’s message was universal — of oneness, compassion, equality, and remembrance of the Divine. His birth, therefore, is not merely historical but cosmic, representing the dawn of spiritual consciousness.

Satgur Nanak Pargateya Shabad Lyrics

Origin of the Hymn – Vaaran Bhai Gurdas Ji (1st Vaar, Pauri 27)

This sacred verse belongs to Vaaran Bhai Gurdas Ji, considered the “key to Guru Granth Sahib Ji.” Bhai Gurdas Ji was a scholar, poet, and one of the earliest interpreters of Sikh thought. In this Vaar, he vividly describes how the coming of Guru Nanak transformed the spiritual landscape of the world.

The phrase “Miti Dhund Jag Chanann Hoaa” (ਮਿਟੀ ਧੁੰਧੁ ਜਗਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਹੋਆ) means “The mist cleared, and the world was illuminated.” Through this metaphor, Bhai Gurdas Ji depicts how ignorance vanished, and wisdom prevailed.

Satguru Nanak Pargateya Lyrics (Original Gurmukhi Version)

Here are the original lines from Vaaran Bhai Gurdas Ji (1st Vaar, Pauri 27):

Punjabi Translation (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ)

Line-by-Line Explanation and Spiritual Interpretation

Each line of this divine composition from Bhai Gurdas Ji carries profound symbolic meaning that reflects both the spiritual and cosmic significance of Guru Nanak’s advent.

1. “Satguru Nanak Pargateya, miti dhundh jag chanan hoa.”

This line symbolizes the dispelling of ignorance. Guru Nanak’s appearance is equated to the sunrise that removes darkness. The world, trapped in illusion and falsehood, found clarity through his divine teachings.

2. “Jio kar sooraj nikliya, tare chhapi andher paloaa.”

Here, Bhai Gurdas Ji uses celestial imagery — the stars fading before the sun — to explain that the smaller, limited sources of light (false beliefs) vanish before the infinite radiance of divine truth.

3. “Singh buke mirgaavali, bhanni jai na dheer dharoaa.”

This powerful metaphor of the lion and the deer portrays the victory of courage over fear. The lion symbolizes divine truth, while the deer represents worldly attachments and illusions. When truth roars, fear cannot survive.

4. “Jithe Baba pair dhar, puja asan thapan soa.”

Wherever Guru Nanak stepped, holiness emerged. His presence sanctified ordinary spaces into spiritual centers — symbolizing that divinity resides wherever truth and compassion dwell.

Even great yogis and ascetics acknowledged Guru Nanak’s wisdom. Bhai Gurdas Ji here expresses the universality of Nanak’s message — it transcended sects and traditions.

6. “Ghar ghar andar dharmsaal hovai keertan sada visoa.”

This line is prophetic — it describes how, through Guru Nanak’s teachings, every home became a center of devotion, where the divine name (Naam) resounded continuously.

7. “Babe taare chaar chak nao khand prithmi sacha dhoa.”

Guru Nanak’s message spread across all four corners and nine continents. The “true Name” (Satnam) cleansed the world of impurity and ignorance.

8. “Gurmukh kal vich pargat hoa.”

In the age of darkness (Kalyug), when humanity strayed from truth, a Gurmukh (God-centered being) appeared — Guru Nanak himself — to illuminate the path once again.

The Symbolism of Light in Sikh Philosophy

In Sikhism, light (ਜੋਤਿ) is not just illumination but a metaphor for divine consciousness. When Bhai Gurdas Ji says, “Miti dhundh jag chanan hoa,” he’s expressing the idea that when God’s wisdom manifests, inner darkness (ego, ignorance, material attachment) disappears.

Guru Nanak’s life is itself the light — shining upon every heart regardless of caste, creed, or faith. His light represents Ik Onkar, the oneness of all creation.

Guru Nanak as the Eternal Guide

Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s message was timeless: “There is no Hindu, there is no Muslim — only the light of the Divine.” He emphasized the remembrance of Naam (God’s Name), honest living, and selfless service (Seva).

As the Satguru, he is the eternal teacher who awakens souls from spiritual sleep. His manifestation (Pargateya) is not bound by time — it continues to shine through Gurbani, Kirtan, and the living faith of devotees.
