प्रो. साहिब सिंह केवल एक व्यक्ति नहीं, बल्कि एक संस्था थे—और ऐसी संस्था, जिसकी बराबरी कोई दूसरी संस्था तो क्या, उसकी छाया तक नहीं छू सकती। शिरोमणि गुरुद्वारा प्रबंधक कमेटी (SGPC), जो विश्वभर के सिखों की सर्वोच्च संस्था मानी जाती है, सौ वर्षों से अधिक के अस्तित्व के बावजूद भी उतना योगदान नहीं दे सकी, जितना प्रो. साहिब सिंह जी ने अकेले तीस–चालीस वर्षों में कर दिखाया। उन्होंने गुरु ग्रंथ साहिब जी की व्याकरण पर आधारित टीका 'दार्पण' के माध्यम से जो जागरूकता और समझ पंथ में लाई, वह आज भी दिन-ब-दिन बढ़ रही है।
यह सब तब हुआ जब SGPC को प्रचार के लिए हर साल अरबों रुपये मिलते हैं और उनके पास हर तरह के संसाधन उपलब्ध हैं। इसके विपरीत, प्रो. साहिब सिंह ने अपने निजी संसाधनों से ही काम किया। उनके पास बस का किराया तक नहीं होता था, और वे 35–36 मील (लगभग 60 किलोमीटर) पैदल चल कर जाते थे। रास्ते में अगर चप्पल टूट जाती तो उसे वहीं फेंक कर नंगे पाँव यात्रा पूरी करनी पड़ती। कभी-कभी 40 मील की दूरी पैदल तय कर गाड़ी तक पहुँचना पड़ता। स्कूल के हॉस्टल में 20 सेर आटा पहुँचाने के लिए उनके छोटे भाई हर महीने सिर पर बोझ उठा कर 33 किलोमीटर पैदल जाते और वापस आते। एक बार तो प्रो. साहिब को लगातार दो दिन पैदल चलकर स्कूल पहुँचना पड़ा।
ऐसी विषम परिस्थितियों में, कोई भी बड़ी से बड़ी संस्था भी प्रो. साहिब सिंह जी के समर्पण, संघर्ष और योगदान के सामने कहीं नहीं ठहरती।
