Extraordinary Childhood of Guru Ramdas Ji
Guru Ram Dass was born on the 24th of September 1534 A.D., in Chuna Mandi Street of Lahore. His father, Hardas Sodhi was Khatri by caste. He was named Ram Dass but being the first child, he came to be called Jetha (first child) at home and in the locality. His parents passed away when he was seven. His maternal grandparents lived at Basarke. After the death of his parents, his grandmother took him to Basarke. To make his living, he started selling boiled salted grams at Basarke. In 1546 A.D., Sri Amar Dass colonized Goindwal. As advised by Guru Angad Dev, he came to Basarke to take his family along with him. He also took Sri Ram Dass along to Goindwal.
After reaching Goindwal, Sri Ram Dass restarted his work of selling seasoned grams. After his round, he made it a daily routine to serve the devotees assembled for discourses. Guru Angad Dev entrusted the Guruship to Sri Amar Dass in 1552 A.D. and commanded him to preach Sikhism while staying at Goindwal. One day Mother Mansha Devi requested Guru Amar Dass, "It is time, we should look for a suitable groom for our daughter Bhani." The Guru asked, "What type of groom should we look for ?" Sri Ram Dass was passing by at that time. Mother Mansha Devi pointed toward him and said, "The him. There is none else." In this way, considering Sri Ram Dass a suitable groom for Bibi Bhani, they were married in December 1552 A.D.
In Goindwal
Guru Amar Dass returned to Goindwal in 1558 A.D., after preaching to the masses assembled at Hindu places of pilgrimage, the practical way of life of sitting at a common place for taking meals, giving up differences of caste and creed, and sharing common services. Reaching Goindwal, he started the construction of a step-well. On hearing about the construction of the step-well, the devotees started pouring in to take part in the service.
One day some pilgrims from Lahore who were going for a holy dip to Hardwar, stopped at Goindwal. They were surprised to see Sri Ram Dass, a son of a Khatri, carrying a basket of sand on his head and working along with people of low castes like an ordinary laborer in his in-law's house. They said to the Guru angrily, "You becoming of you." Hearing his relatives talk like this, Sri Ram Dass went to the Guru and prayed, "Please do not be angry with them. They are innocent and do not know what they are saying. They have no knowledge that service is above caste, creed, and relationship." Read More.
