Extraordinary Childhood of Guru Ramdas Ji
Sri Guru Ramdas Ji was born on 24 September 1534 in Chuna Mandi, Lahore. His father was Hardas Sodhi. Guru Sahib was known as Bhai Jetha Ji during childhood, as he was the first child in the family.
According to the historical account, Guru Ramdas Ji lost both parents at the age of seven. His maternal grandparents lived at Basarke, where his grandmother took him after the passing of his parents.
During his early years, Bhai Jetha Ji earned a living by selling boiled and salted grams. His childhood experiences reflect the values of honest work and humility.
In 1546, Sri Guru Amar Das Ji brought Bhai Jetha Ji to Goindwal, where he continued his work and began serving the devotees who gathered for religious discourses.
Guru Ramdas Ji at Goindwal
At Goindwal, Bhai Jetha Ji devoted himself to honest work and selfless service. After completing his daily work, he served the Sangat and took part in activities organized under the guidance of Guru Amar Das Ji.
In 1552, Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji entrusted the Guruship to Guru Amar Das Ji, who continued guiding the Sikh community at Goindwal.
During this period, Bhai Jetha Ji married Bibi Bhani Ji, the daughter of Guru Amar Das Ji. The original historical account places their marriage in December 1552.
Guru Ramdas Ji and the Importance of Seva
Guru Ramdas Ji's life at Goindwal offers an inspiring example of humility and selfless service.
According to the historical account, Guru Amar Das Ji began the construction of a step-well at Goindwal. Devotees gathered to participate in this work, and Bhai Jetha Ji joined them in carrying sand and performing manual labour.
Some visiting relatives from Lahore questioned why Bhai Jetha Ji was doing such work. Rather than responding with anger, Guru Ramdas Ji respectfully explained the value of service beyond social divisions.
This account highlights the importance of Seva (selfless service) and equality within the Sikh tradition.
