As Narrated in Sri Gur Partap Suraj Granth (Raas 11, Ansh 3 to 9)
By Kavi Santokh Singh Ji
Introduction & Context
Sri Gur Partap Suraj Granth (popularly known as Suraj Parkash), composed by the revered poet Kavi Santokh Singh Ji, is one of the most monumental and comprehensive historical epics detailing the lives of the Ten Sikh Gurus.
In Raas 11 (Ansh 3 to 9), Kavi Santokh Singh Ji vividly describes the momentous historical event of Guru Ladho Re ("The Guru has been found!"). Following the ascension of the eighth Guru, Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji, who left the enigmatic final words "Baba Bakale" (the revered Elder/Guru resides in Bakala), twenty-two impostors (primarily Sodhi claimants supported by greedy masands) set up separate thrones (gaddis) in the village of Bakala, each posing as the true Ninth Guru.
This report presents the complete narrative of Makhan Shah Lubana—a devout Sikh merchant—from his perilous voyage on the stormy ocean to his uncovering of the true Ninth Master, Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji, rendered directly from the original Braj Bhasha verse of Suraj Parkash.
Raas 11, Ansh 3: The Perilous Voyage & The Sacred Vow
Narrative Summary
Makhan Shah Lubana was a wealthy trader whose trading ships (bavye jahaaj) traversed deep seas. During one journey, a violent storm broke out, driving his ship into treacherous quicksand near a desolate island. The sailors struggled in vain, and all human efforts failed.
Desperate and recognizing that only the Divine Guru could save him from the clutches of death, Makhan Shah stood with folded hands (anjuli thani) and prayed fervently to Guru Nanak's light—recalling Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji. He vowed that if his ship was safely guided across the ocean, he would present 500 gold coins (dinars/asharfis) as a devout offering (bhet) at the Guru's feet.
Through divine grace, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji subtly exerted His spiritual power, rescuing the ship. The ignorant crew believed their physical push had freed the boat, but Makhan Shah knew in his heart that the Satguru alone had preserved his honor.

Narrative Summary
After safely completing his trade and earning immense profit, Makhan Shah traveled towards Punjab with his entire family, retinue, and guards to fulfill his vow and behold the Satguru. Upon reaching the region, he learned of the physical passing of Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji and His historic decree: "Baba Bakale".
Arriving in Bakala, Makhan Shah was astonished and deeply confused (samsai). In the absence of a clearly declared successor, 22 fake Gurus from the Sodhi lineage had set up thrones, each employing greedy masands who aggressively claimed their master was the true Guru. Dhir Mal, supported by influential masands, asserted his claim using the original Adi Granth Sahib volume in his possession.
Makhan Shah reflected: "A Guru is an all-knowing ocean of truth (Antaryami). How can I discern who holds the true spiritual light of Guru Nanak?"

Narrative Summary
Pondering deeply through the night, Makhan Shah devised a clever test. He reasoned that the true Guru is the innerknower of all hearts (Antaryami) and would know of his secret vow made at sea.
He resolved to visit every claimant and offer only two gold coins (dinars). An impostor driven by greed would greedily accept the two coins and bless him. But the true Satguru would demand the exact 500 gold coins pledged during the maritime crisis.
Next morning, dressed in fine clothes, Makhan Shah visited Dhir Mal and the other 21 claimants. Each accepted the two coins with joy, bestowed robes of honor (siropas), and praised Makhan Shah to secure more wealth. None spoke a word about the ship, the storm, or the 500 gold coins. Disappointed and sorrowful, Makhan Shah returned to his camp, wondering if the true Master had hidden Himself completely like a lion inside a cave.

Narrative Summary
Meanwhile, the local attendants reported Makhan Shah's arrival to Mata Nanaki Ji (mother of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji). She observed how the deceitful Sodhi claimants were misleading the congregation and urged her son, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, to step forward, sit publicly, and assume the Guruship.
Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji, deeply detached (vairagvan) and immersed in constant divine contemplation (Brahmaanand), gently refused to engage in worldly rivalry or display His status. He warned that anyone who aggressively seeks self-aggrandizement or worldly fame risks spiritual ruin. He instructed everyone to remain quiet and let the Divine Will (Karta Purakh Vilas) unfold naturally.

Narrative Summary
Distressed by his failure to find the true Master, Makhan Shah spent the night in prayer and contemplation of Gurbani (Japji Sahib). He inquired if any other Sodhi descendant lived in Bakala who had not set up a public court.
A Sikh mentioned Tegh Bahadur Ji, son of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, who lived in complete humility, detachment, and solitude in a quiet chamber (laghu koshth), unconcerned with worldly pomp or offerings.
Hearing this, Makhan Shah's heart surged with hope and intuitive longing. He proceeded to Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji's residence. Entering the quiet room, he saw the serene Guru absorbed in divine ecstasy. Makhan Shah bowed reverently and placed two gold dinars before Him.
The glorious Ninth Master looked at Makhan Shah, smiled gently, and spoke words that shattered all doubt:
"O noble Sikh! Why present only two coins when you pledged five hundred during your crisis at sea? Where is the remaining promise made when your ship was trapped in the waves?"
Upon hearing these words, Makhan Shah's body experienced goosebumps of spiritual ecstasy (rumanch). Tears of joy flooded his eyes. He realized he was standing before the true, all-knowing Light of Guru Nanak.

Narrative Summary
Overwhelmed with awe and supreme joy, Makhan Shah fell at the Guru's feet. He offered his entire heart and expressed his desire to proclaim Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji to the world so that the wandering Sikh congregation (Sangat) might find its true refuge.
Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji cautioned him about the heavy burden (pot) of Guruship, explaining that worldly impostors and jealous Sodhis would harbor enmity and cause trouble. Undeterred, Makhan Shah spent the entire night preparing lavish garments (poshish), rich offerings, and sacred food (Karah Parshad).
He assembled his followers and guards, resolved to reveal the true Master to the entire world the following morning.

Narrative Summary
Accompanied by Mata Nanaki Ji's blessings, Makhan Shah brought the magnificent garments, five hundred gold coins, and sacred offerings to Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji. Facing the Guru, Makhan Shah humbly requested Him to adorn the robes of state and grant public audience (Darshan) to save the bewildered congregation.
Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji accepted the devout offering and manifest His divine presence. Driven by uncontrollable ecstasy and spiritual joy, Makhan Shah climbed atop the highest rooftop (kotha) in Bakala. Waving his cloth in the air, he proclaimed at the top of his voice across the village:
"ਗੁਰੂ ਲਾਧੋ ਰੇ! ਗੁਰੂ ਲਾਧੋ ਰੇ!"
("The True Guru has been found! The True Guru has been found!")
Sikhan and devout seekers from all directions rushed to the spot upon hearing Makhan Shah's joyous cries. The false thrones of the 22 impostors collapsed instantly as the Sangat thronged to bow at the holy feet of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji, the true Ninth Nanak.

- Inner Divine Omniscience (Antaryamta): The true Satguru requires no worldly advertisements or public clamor; He knows the silent prayers and inner vows of every seeker.
- Faith vs. Deception (Sidak vs. Pakhand): While 22 impostors actively sought money and prestige through masands, the genuine Guru remained detached in silent communion with the Divine.
- Unwavering Devotion (Guru Par Partit): Makhan Shah Lubana exemplifies the ideal Gurmukh who tests worldly claims through spiritual discernment rather than superficial ceremony.
