20. ਸਾਖੀ ਮੱਖਣਸ਼ਾਹ ਬਨਜਾਰੇ ਕੇ ਬਕਾਲੇ ਆਨੇ ਕੀ ਚਾਲੀ
ਸੰਮਤ ਸਤਰਾਂ ਸੈ ਇਕੀਸ ਕੋ ਦੀਵਾਲੀ ਕਾ ਪੂਰਬ ਹੋਆ, ਦੂਰ ਨੇੜੇ ਸੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਹੁਮ ਹੁਮਾਇ ਕੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਆਈਆਂ । ਬਕਾਲਾ ਗਾਉਂ ਮੈਂ ਬੜਾ ਕੰਤੂਹਲ ਹੋਆ, ਭਾਈ ਵਾਰਾ ਪਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਆ ਰਹਾਂ । ਮੱਖਣ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਬਨਜਾਰਾ ਸੰਗਤ ਕੋ ਸਾਥ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਪਾਨੇ ਆਇਆ । ਇਸ ਕਾ ਬੇੜਾ ਦਰਿਆਇ ਬੀਚ ਮੂੰ ਕੇ ਪੱਤਨ ਮੇਂ ਭੰਵਰ ਬੀਚ ਫਾਸਾ ਥਾ । ਇਸੇ ਇੱਕ ਸੌ ਮੋਹਰ ਭੇਟਾ ਦੇਨੀ ਮਾਨੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਮੂਹਰੋਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਬਕਾਲਾ ਨਗਰੀ ਆਇਆ । ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮੇਂ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਧੀਰ ਮੱਲ ਜੀ ਕਾ ਘਰ ਥਾ, ਮਸੰਦ ਬਨਜਾਰੇ ਕੋ ਇਸ ਕੇ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਮੇਂ ਲੈ ਆਏ । ਮੱਖਨ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੇ ਪਾਂਚ ਮੂਹਰੋਂ ਭੇਟਾਂ ਕੀ, ਇਸ ਕੀ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਸੋਲਜਈ ਤੇ ਤਹਾਂ ਬੇਟਿਆਂ ਚੰਦੂ ਲਾਲ, ਲਾਲ ਚੰਦ ਤੇ ਕੁਸ਼ਾਲ ਚੰਦ ਨੇ ਦੋਇ ਦੇਇ ਮੋਹਰਾਂ ਭੇਟਾ ਰਾਖੀ। ਇਸ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਜੀ ਕਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਪਾਇਆ । ਸ੍ਰੀ ਧੀਰ ਮੱਲ ਨੇ ਇਨ੍ਹੇ ਸਿਰੋਪਾਇ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਡੇਰੇ ਸੇ ਵਿਦਿਆ ਕੀਆ । ਮੱਖਨ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਯਹਾਂ ਸੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਗ਼ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਜੀ ਤੋਂ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਮੈਂ ਆਇਆ । ਪਾਂਚ ਮੂਹਰੋਂ ਭੇਟਾ ਕੀ। ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਮੁਸਕਰਾਏ, ਬਨਜਾਰੇ ਸੋ ਆਪਨੀ ਮਨੌਤ ਮਾਂਗੀ । ਬਚਨ ਹੋਆ, ਮੱਖਣ ਸ਼ਾਹ ! ਤੇਰੀ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਸੂਹੇ ਰਾਂਗ ਕੀ ਥੈਲੀ ਮੈਂ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਡੇਰਾ ਹਰੇ ਰਾਂਗ ਕਾ ਹੈ ਮੋਹਰਾਂ ਪਾਇ ਕੇ ਲਾਈ ਹੈ । ਥੈਲੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਬੜੇ ਬੇਟੇ ਪਾਸ ਹੈ ਜ ਪੀਛੇ ਖਲਾ ਹੈ। ਚੰਦੂ ਲਾਲ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕਾ ਬਚਨੁ ਪਾਇ ਆਗੇ ਆਇ ਮਸਤਕ ਟੇਕ ਕੇ ਥੈਲੀ ਭੇਟਾ ਕੀ । ਮੱਖਣ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਬਾਹਰ ਆਇ ਪੱਲੂ ਫੇਰਿਆ, ਕਹਾ ‘ਭੂਲੀਏ ਸੰਗਤੇ ! ਗੁਰੂ ਲਾਧੋ ਰੇ' ਤੀਨ ਬਾਰ ਐਸਾ ਬਚਨ ਕੀਆ । ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਬਨਜਾਰੇ ਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਬਿਗਸੇ, ਇਸੇ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਦਾਨ ਦੀਆ।
English Translation
20. Sakhi: The account of Makhan Shah the Banjarа’s coming to Bakala
In Samvat 1721, on the occasion of the Diwali festival, Sikh congregations came from far and near in great numbers to have the Guru’s darshan. There was great excitement in the village of Bakala, but Bhai Vara was not able to come across. Makhan Shah the Banjara came with a congregation to obtain the Guru’s darshan. His boat had become caught in a whirlpool in the river at the port of Munke. He had resolved to make an offering of one hundred mohurs, and taking these coins, he came to the town of Bakala.
First, he came to the house of Sri Dhir Mal Ji. The masand brought the Banjara into his house. Makhan Shah offered five mohurs; his wife, Soljai, offered five, and his sons Chandu Lal, Lal Chand, and Kushal Chand each offered two mohurs. All of them had the darshan of Sri Granth Ji. Sri Dhir Mal gave them siropas and sent them away from his camp.
From there, Makhan Shah came to the court of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. He offered five mohurs. Guru Ji smiled, and the Banjara asked for the fulfillment of his vow. Guru Ji said, “Makhan Shah! Your wife has brought a pouch of red colour, in which she has placed the mohurs; its dera is of green colour. The pouch is with your elder son, who is standing behind.” Chandu Lal, having heard Guru Ji’s words, came forward, bowed his forehead before Guru Ji, and offered the pouch.
Makhan Shah came outside, waved his cloth, and said, “O misguided congregation! I have found the Guru!” He said these words three times. Guru Ji was greatly pleased with the Banjara and bestowed upon him the gift of Sikh initiation.
