1. English Translation

Slok Mahalla 5th ( Amrit Baani Ameo Ras Amrit Har Ka Naao ) The Guru's Word (bani) is the nectar of life, with its taste like the nectar, which immortalizes the man and the Lord's True Name is like the nectar (elixir) of life. Let us always recite the True Name with love and devotion (with body and mind) by singing the praises of the Lord all the twenty-four hours (eight Pehars).

O, Guru's Sikhs! You should listen to the Guru's message -(Guru's teachings) which tastes like the nectar of Truthfulness. By inculcating the love of True Name in your heart, you could make a success of this invaluable life with fruitful results. By reciting the Lord's True Name, we could enjoy the eternal bliss of life in the state of equipoise and cast away all our sufferings.

O, Nanak! By reciting the True Name, we could enjoy all the joy and pleasures of life and a place of honour in the Lord's presence. (Lord's Court) (1)

Mahalla 5th

O, Nanak! Let us recite the True Name by following the perfect Guru's guidance and teachings. (By following) The Guru's Will constitutes the meditation or penance and a mode of disciplined life including the casting away of all our afflictions or worldly bondage.

We are passed through the cycle of Rebirths as per Lord's Will and it is through the Lord's Will alone that we are bestowed with His Grace and favours. It is through the Lord's Will that we enjoy pleasures or undergo suffering and carry out all our worldly chores (functions) as per His Will.

Through the Lord's Will, this human body is created with the five elements (like air and water) and then provided with the soul by the Lord's Will. It is through the Lord's Will that the human being enjoys all the worldly pleasures and it is through His Will alone that one is taken out of this worldly bondage.

It is as per the Lord's Will that the human being is taken to paradise or hell (as per his actions) and it is through the Lord's Will that one faces defeat or tribulations in life. (one falls down on the Earth) O, Nanak! There are a few (fortunate) persons only, who are enabled to engage themselves in the Lord's worship (reciting True Name). (2)

Pouri

I am leading this life (feel thrilled with active life) by listening to the praises of the Lord being sung. (Lord's Greatness). This True Name helps the animal-minded (with filthy minds) demons and ignorant persons attain salvation in a moment.

We should always sing the praises of the Lord by reciting the True Name so that we can get rid of worldly desires, hunger (for more possessions), and other afflictions with the support of the True Name. -The person, who has inculcated the love of True Name in the heart, casts away all his sufferings, maladies, and afflictions. The person, who is immersed in the Guru's Word, gains all the knowledge of the Lord.

O, Lord benefactor of the whole Universe (comprising all the Khands and countries), O, my beloved Lord! You alone enjoy Your Greatness, deserving all praises. (12)

श्लोक महला ५

अम्रित बाणी अमिउ रसु अम्रितु हरि का नाउ ॥ मनि तनि हिरदै सिमरि हरि आठ पहर गुण गाउ ॥ उपदेसु सुणहु तुम गुरसिखहु सचा इहै सुआउ ॥ जनमु पदारथु सफलु होइ मन महि लाइहु भाउ ॥ सूख सहज आनदु घणा प्रभ जपतिआ दुखु जाइ ॥ नानक नामु जपत सुखु ऊपजै दरगह पाईऐ थाउ ॥१॥

यह अमृतमय वाणी अमृत रूपी रस है और हरि का नाम ही अमृत है। अपने मन, तन एवं हृदय में हरि को याद करो और आठ प्रहर उसका ही स्तुतिगान करो। हे गुरु के शिष्यो, तुम उपदेश सुनो, जीवन का यही सच्चा मनोरथ है।

मन में श्रद्धा धारण करने से तुम्हारा जन्म सफल हो जाएगा। प्रभु का जाप करने से दुख दूर हो जाता है और मन में सहज सुख एवं बड़ा आनंद प्राप्त होता है। हे नानक ! परमात्मा का नाम जपने से मन में सुख पैदा हो जाता है और सत्य के दरबार में स्थान मिल जाता है॥ १॥

महला ५

नानक नामु धिआईऐ गुरु पूरा मति देइ ॥ भाणै जप तप संजमो भाणै ही कढि लेइ ॥ भाणै जोनि भवाईऐ भाणै बखस करेइ ॥ भाणै दुखु सुखु भोगीऐ भाणै करम करेइ ॥ भाणै मिटी साजि कै भाणै जोति धरेइ ॥ भाणै भोग भोगाइदा भाणै मनहि करेइ ॥ भाणै नरकि सुरगि अउतारे भाणै धरणि परेइ ॥ भाणै ही जिसु भगती लाए नानक विरले हे ॥२॥

हे नानक ! पूर्ण गुरु यही मत देता है कि हरि-नाम का ध्यान करो। ईश्वरेच्छा में ही जीव जप, तप एवं संयम करता है और अपनी इच्छा से ही वह जीव को बन्धन-मुक्त कर देता है। ईश्वरेच्छा से ही जीव योनियों में भटकता है और अपनी इच्छा से ही वह कृपा कर देता है।

भगवान की रजा से ही दुख-सुख भोगना पड़ता है और उसकी इच्छा से ही हम शुभाशुभ कर्म करते हैं। वह अपनी इच्छा से ही शरीर का निर्माण करके उसमें प्राण डाल देता है। वह अपनी इच्छानुसार ही जीव को भोग विलास करवाता है और अपनी मर्जी से ही उन्हें रोकता भी है।

प्रभु की रज़ा से ही जीव नरक-स्वर्ग में जन्म लेता है और ईश्वरेच्छा से ही धरती में उसका जन्म होता है। हे नानक ! ऐसे जीव विरले ही हैं, जिसे प्रभु अपनी इच्छा से भक्ति में लगा देता है। २॥

वडिआई सचे नाम की हउ जीवा सुणि सुणे ॥ पसू परेत अगिआन उधारे इक खणे ॥ दिनसु रैणि तेरा नाउ सदा सद जापीऐ ॥ त्रिसना भुख विकराल नाइ तेरै ध्रापीऐ ॥ रोगु सोगु दुखु वंञै जिसु नाउ मनि वसै ॥ तिसहि परापति लालु जो गुर सबदी रसै ॥ खंड ब्रहमंड बेअंत उधारणहारिआ ॥ तेरी सोभा तुधु सचे मेरे पिआरिआ ॥१२॥

मैं तो सच्चे-नाम की कीर्ति सुन-सुनकर ही जीवन पा रहा हूँ। प्रभु का नाम एक क्षण में ही पशु-प्रेत एवं अज्ञानी जीवों का उद्धार कर देता है। हे परमेश्वर ! दिन-रात सदैव तेरा नाम जपता रहता हूँ, तेरे नाम से तृष्णा की विकराल भूख भी मिट जाती है।

जिसके मन में नाम बस जाता है, उसके रोग, शोक एवं दुख दूर हो जाते हैं। जो गुरु-शब्द में आनंद प्राप्त करता है, उसे प्यारा प्रभु प्राप्त होता है। हे उद्धारक ! तेरे खण्ड-ब्रह्माण्ड बेअंत हैं। हे मेरे प्यारे सच्चे प्रभु ! तेरी शोभा तुझे ही भाती है। १२॥

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੫

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਲ ਹੈ, ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ; (ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵਸਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ, ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ, ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਮਰੋ ਤੇ ਅੱਠੇ ਪਹਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰੋ।

ਹੇ ਗੁਰ-ਸਿੱਖੋ! (ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਾਲਾ ਇਹ) ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਸੁਣੋ, ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਅਸਲ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਇਹੀ ਹੈ। ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਪਿਆਰ ਟਿਕਾਓ, ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰੂਪ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਸਫਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਇਗੀ।

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸੁਖ, ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਤੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆਂ (ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਸੁਖ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਥਾਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।1।

ਮਃ ੫

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ (ਤਾਂ ਇਹ) ਮਤਿ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ; (ਪਰ ਉਂਞ) ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮ (ਆਦਿਕ ਕਰਮ-ਕਾਂਡ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਇਸ ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਕੱਢ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਜੀਵ ਉਤੇ) ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ) ਦੁੱਖ ਸੁਖ ਭੋਗਣਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਉਤੇ) ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸਰੀਰ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਵਿਚ) ਜਿੰਦ ਪਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੋਗਾਂ ਵਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਭੋਗਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਰੋਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ) ਨਰਕ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ (ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ) ਸੁਰਗ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਬੰਦਗੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਹਨ।2।

ਪਉੜੀ

ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਾਂ (ਕਰ ਕੇ ਤੇ) ਸੁਣ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਜਿੰਦ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਹਾਸਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ) , (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਪਸ਼ੂ-ਸੁਭਾਵ, ਪ੍ਰੇਤ-ਸੁਭਾਵ ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨ-ਹੀਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਖਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਤਾਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਡਰਾਉਣੀ ਭੁੱਖ ਤ੍ਰੇਹ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ (ਵਿਕਾਰ-) ਰੋਗ ਸਹਸਾ ਤੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਹੀਰਾ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਰਚ-ਮਿਚ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਹੇ ਖੰਡਾਂ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਹੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ! ਤੇਰੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਫਬਦੀ ਹੈ (ਆਪਣੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ) ।12।
