Akali Baba Phula Singh was a Sikh warrior and religious leader who dedicated his life to the service of the Khalsa. He was born on January 14, 1761, in the village of Sarinh, in the present-day district of Sangrur Punjab, into a Jatt family of the Sarao clan. Baba Ishar Singh, his father, was seriously wounded in the Wadda Ghalughara (the Great Holocaust) of 1762 and died shortly thereafter. From a young age, Baba Phula Singh showed a deep interest in religion and martial arts. He joined the Jatha of Akali Baba Naina Singh Ji, Misal Shaheedan, and started living with him, where he received training in Gurbaani Vidya and all martial arts.

Early Life and Training

Misal Shaheedan was the Dal of Baba Deep Singh Ji Shaheed, a Jatha of dedicated Gursikhs who lived life according to True Gurmat principles. This was the first Jatha to be given a Nishan (a Flag) and a Nagara (a Battle Drum) when the Khalsa Panth was organized into five Jathas in 1734. Its duty was to look after Gurudwaras and Takhats and give Gurbaani Vidya, Shastarvidya, and Naam Abhyaas. Baba Phula Singh Ji also started living at the Harimandir at an early age in a Sangat of Gursikhs that included Baba Naina Singh Ji and Giani Bhai Soorat Singh Ji, who was the head granthi of Sri Darbar Sahib. In no time, he was well-trained in Gurbaani Vidya and all martial arts and ended up becoming the leader of the devout band of fearless fighters.

Role in Sikh Religion

Akali Baba Phula Singh was a devout Sikh who played an important role in the Sikh religion. He was appointed as the leader of the Sikh Nihangs and was responsible for their training and discipline. The Sikh Nihangs were an order of saintly warriors created by Dasam Pita Guru Gobind Singh Ji to serve and protect the Khalsa community. They were renowned for their martial skills, daredevil courage, and willingness to speak their minds.

The Nihangs were often referred to as "Suicide Squads" by many historians, which is a misnomer. Suicide is considered a sin in the Sikh religion, and the Nihangs were not suicide squads but fearless fighters who were willing to lay down their lives to defend the Khalsa. Akali Baba Phula Singh was one such fearless fighter who dedicated his life to the service of the Khalsa.

Contribution to the Sikh Community

Akali Baba Phula Singh played a crucial role in defending the Sikh community against the attacks of the Mughal Empire. He led his band of fearless fighters in several battles, including the Battle of Amritsar in 1805, where he fought against the combined forces of the Mughal Empire and the British East India Company.

He was also responsible for the upkeep of the Harimandir Sahib and other gurudwaras in the region. Under his leadership, the Sikh Nihangs became a disciplined and highly trained force that played an important role in defending the Sikh community against its enemies.

Death

Akali Baba Phula Singh died on 14th February 1823 in a battle against the forces of the Mughal Empire. He was surrounded by his band of fearless fighters and refused to surrender, fighting until his last breath. His martyrdom is celebrated by the Sikh community every year on the anniversary
