The Sikhs have always been a brave people and they have a tradition of martyrdom, and there are numerous instances in Sikh history of persons who sacrificed their lives. These martyrs not only accepted to die as martyrs but also saw their whole families dying as martyrs.
What a perfect example of such a situation one can hardly find in the history of the world. The rulers of the time used various tricky means to wipe out the Sikhs from the face of the earth. They tortured them inhumanly, offered rewards for their heads, and went to the extent of ordering to have no regard for the Guru. But the Sikhs namely the Sikh Siddaks and the Guru’s Sikhs did not budge and they did not give up their principles of Gurmat in any way. They did not shy away from death, but rather, boasted in the face of opposition.
A similar exceptional martyr was Bhai Sahib Bhai Mani Singh Ji Shaheed. The date of birth of Bhai Mani Singh Ji has been recorded by Shaheed Bilas and writings of Sewa Singh Ji, that he was born on 10th March 1644, A. D. (1 Chet, Sudi Duadashi, Sunday, Sammat 1701) in the home of Bhai Maidas in village Alipur, District Muzaffargarh, West Pakistan to Mata Madhri The family background of Bhai Mani Singh Ji is from his grandfather Bhai Balu Rai Ji, who was martyred in Amritsar in 1628 in the fight against Turks along with the 6th Patshah Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji.
Among Bhai Mani Singh Ji's twelve brothers, only Amar Chand died a young death, other eleven brothers offered their lives for the Sikh cause. Besides, for gaining knowledge and following the path as prescribed by the Guru, seven out of his ten sons demonstrated the authenticity of the Guru’s words by laying down their lives.
