Guru Hargobind Sahib Joti Jot Diwas 2025
Guru Hargobind Sahib Joti Jot Diwas is a very important day for all Sikhs in the world. It is the day that commemorates the day when Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, the sixth Guru of the Sikhs, left his mortal body on Chet Sudi 5th, Bikram Samvat 1701. Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji is known as the "Master of Miri-Piri" because he highlighted the significance of both spiritual and worldly power. He was the first Sikh Guru to bear arms and instructed his followers to fight for their rights against oppression.

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਮਹਾਰਾਜ ਚੇਤ ਸੁਦੀ ਪੰਚਮੀ, 1695 ਬਿ. ਸੰਮਤ (ਗੁਰਪੁਰਬ ਦਰਪਨ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਚੇਤ ਸੁਦੀ 5, 6 ਚੇਤ ਬਿਕ੍ਰਮੀ 1701, 3 ਮਾਰਚ 1644 ਈ. (ਜੂਲੀਅਨ), 13 ਮਾਰਚ 1644 ਈ. ਨਵਾਂ) ਨੂੰ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਏ ਸਨ। ਮਹਾਨ ਕੋਸ਼ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ 7 ਚੇਤ, ਚੇਤ ਸੁਦੀ 5, ਸੰਮਤ 1701, 3 ਮਾਰਚ ਸੰਨ 1644 ਈ. ਨੂੰ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਏ। ਤਵਾਰੀਖ਼ ਗੁਰੂ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਚੇਤਰ ਸੁਦੀ 5, ਦਿਨ ਸ਼ੁਕਰਵਾਰ 9 ਘੜੀ ਰਾਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਸੰਮਤ 1701 ਤੇ ਨਾਨਕਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਸਾਲ 174 ਨੂੰ ਸਚਖੰਡ ਗੁਰਪੁਰ ਜਾ ਵੱਸੇ।
Guru Hargobind Sahib was the only son of Guru Arjan Dev, who ascended the throne of Sikh Guruship on the martyrdom of his father when he was only 11 years old. Guru Sahib built Akal Takht as the temporal seat of authority opposite the Golden Temple in Amritsar. He built a small fort, called Lohgarh and kept a small army (cavalry). He was the first Sikh Guru who ordained his Sikhs to bring offerings of weapons and horses.

Guru Hargobind Sahib established a spiritual and preaching center of the Sikh Nation at Kiratpur Sahib. Here, he spent ten years of his life and breathed his last on 28th February 1644 (some chronicles record the date as 3rd March 1644).
It is said that when Guru's body was placed on the fire, and as the flames rose high, a large number of Sikhs tried to burn themselves on the funeral pier. Har Rai Sahib (Guru) dissuaded them, but earlier two had jumped into the pier and were consumed by the fire. Before his death, Guru Sahib nominated his grandson Har Rai Sahib (The second son of Baba Gurditta Ji) as his successor (Seventh Nanak).

ਕਿਸੇ ਇੱਕ ਖਿਆਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁੰਮ ਹੋਇਆਂ,
ਦਸਾਂ ਕੀ ? ਜੇਹੜਾ ਚਮਤਕਾਰ ਡਿੱਠਾ ।
'ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ' 'ਬੀਰਤਾ' ਗਾਤਰੇ-ਪਾਈ ਹੋਈ,
ਬਾਂਕੇ ਘੋੜੇ ਤੇ ਇਕ ਸਵਾਰ ਡਿੱਠਾ ।
ਓਹਦੀ ਚਾਨਣੀ ਦਾ ਭਰੇ ਚੰਨ ਪਾਣੀ,
ਓਹਨੂੰ ਨੂਰ ਦਾ ਪਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਵਾਰ ਡਿੱਠਾ ।
ਗੰਗਾ ਆ ਆ ਕੇ ਧੋਵੇ ਚਰਨ ਜਿਸਦੇ,
ਗੰਗਾ ਮਾਈਂ ਦਾ ਉਹ ਹੋਣਹਾਰ ਡਿੱਠਾ ।
ਓਹਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਗਿਆ ਚਾ ਮੈਨੂੰ,
ਦਸਾਂ ਕੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਮੇਰੀ ਜੋ ਹੋ ਗਈ ।
ਓਹਦੇ ਚਿਹਰੇ ਦੀ ਪਈ ਚਿਲਕੋਰ ਐਸੀ,
ਲੂੰਅ ਲੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੋ ਹੋ ਗਈ ।
ਵਾਂਙ ਗੋਲੀਆਂ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹਿ ਕੇ,
'ਕਰਦੀ ਓਦ੍ਹੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ' ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵੇਖੀ ।
ਮੁਕਤ ਓਸ ਤੋਂ 'ਮੰਗਦੀ ਮੁਕਤ ਵੇਖੀ',
ਸੱਚ ਮੰਗਦੀ ਓਥੋਂ ਸਚਿਆਈ ਵੇਖੀ ।
'ਤਣੀਆਂ ਫੜ ਫੜਕੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਤਣੀ ਦੀਆਂ,
ਜਨਮ ਜੂਨ ਤੋਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਰਿਹਾਈ ਵੇਖੀ ।
'ਰੇਜਾ' ਗਾੜ੍ਹੇ ਦਾ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਭੇਟ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ',
'ਤਰਦੀ ਮਾਈ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਵੇਖੀ ।
ਜਿਦ੍ਹੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ 'ਚ ਰੁਲਦੀਆਂ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀਆਂ
ਡਿੱਠਾ ਓਸ ਸੱਚੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਨੂੰ ਮੈਂ ।
ਪੜ੍ਹੇ ਪੰਡਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਜਿੱਥੇ,
ਓਥੇ ਪੁੱਜਦਾ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਘਾਹੀ ਨੂੰ ਮੈਂ ।
ਰੰਗਾ ਰੰਗ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਉਹਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਡਿੱਠੇ,
'ਬੰਦੀਵਾਨ ਵੀ ਏ' 'ਬੰਦੀ ਛੋੜ ਵੀ ਏ ।'
'ਲਾਕੇ ਤੋੜਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ 'ਤੋੜ ਚਾੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਏ',
'ਮਾਣ ਰੱਖ ਵੀ ਏ' ਮਾਣ ਤੋੜ ਵੀ ਏ ।
'ਟੁੱਟੇ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਏ' 'ਜੁੜੇ ਪਿਆਰਦਾ ਏ',
ਏਡਾ ਬਲੀ ਕਿ 'ਬੀਰ ਬੇ ਜੋੜ ਵੀ ਏ ।
ਦਇਆ ਧਰਮ ਦਾ 'ਸੱਤ' 'ਨਿਚੋੜ' ਹੈ ਓਹ,
ਲੈਂਦਾ ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਦੀ ਰੱਤ ਨਿਚੋੜ ਵੀ ਏ ।
ਡਿੱਠਾ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦਾ ਮੀਂਹ ਵਰ੍ਹਦਾ,
ਜਿਨ੍ਹੇ ਫੱਲ ਲਾਏ ਵੱਲ ਸੱਖਣੀ ਨੂੰ ।
ਓਹਦੀ ਸੱਤਿਆ ਇੱਕ ਦੇ ਸੱਤ ਦਿੱਤੇ,
ਆਈ ਮੰਗਦੀ ਮਾਈ ਸੁਲੱਖਣੀ ਨੂੰ ।
ਉਹਦੇ ਡਲ੍ਹਕਦੇ ਝਮਕਦੇ ਨੂਰ ਅੱਗੇ,
ਡਿੱਠਾ ਝੁੱਕਿਆ ਨੂਰ ਜਹਾਨ ਦਾ ਸਿਰ ।
ਓਸ ਸਚੇ ਸੁਲਤਾਨ ਦੇ ਤਾਜ ਅੱਗੇ,
ਨੀਵਾਂ ਡਿੱਠਾ ਜਹਾਂਗੀਰ ਸੁਲਤਾਨ ਦਾ ਸਿਰ ।
ਓਸ ਚੰਨ ਦੇ ਚਿਹਰੇ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਾਨ ਅੱਗੇ,
ਹੈਸੀ ਝੁਕਿਆ ਸ਼ਾਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਾਨ ਦਾ ਸਿਰ ।
ਓਹਦੀ ਬੀਰਤਾ ਤੇ ਅਣਖ ਆਣ ਅੱਗੇ,
ਪਿਆ ਰੁੱਲਦਾ ਸੀ ਅਣਖ ਮਾਨ ਦਾ ਸਿਰ ।
'ਤੀਰ' ਹਰਮੰਦਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਏ,
ਹਰ ਇੱਕ ਦੀ ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚ ਜਿੰਦ ਏ ਓਹ ।
ਮੀਰੀ ਪੀਰੀ ਦੀ ਜਿਨੇ ਕਮਾਈ ਕੀਤੀ,
ਹਰਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਏ ਓਹ ਬਖਸ਼ਿੰਦ ਏ ਓਹ ।

Story of Guru Hargobind Sahib Jyoti Jyot - From Religious Literature
During the last Satsang, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji preached to the Sikhs about the Devotion path. Guru Ji underscored that Sikh-Sewaks are family members and made everyone read Gurbani and chant Gurmantar and Mulmantar. He said that those who keep his word will always be his beloved ones and forever will remain his beloved until the end of the world.
The guru shot an arrow from the 'Teer-Garhi' shrine and directed his sangat to mark that spot on the ground for the place where his cremation is to be performed. When the arrow fell, Guru Ji found out that that place was called Patalpuri and was ordered to build a barn following his instruction. Guru Ji commanded that the barn should be sealed for seven days and then be opened on the eighth day and Harirai Ji should cremate his body.
Guru Ji then gave these instructions and he and his horse went to bathe by the banks of the holy river Sutlej. Another story, however, not written, is very common in the world of old Gursikhs. It is about Guru Hargobind Sahib getting on his horse and vanishing from the sight of everyone for three days.
During the time of the Great Flood, the Sikh Sangat held on to their faith, reading Bani while seated on the bank of the river and accepting the will of the Lord. When Guru Ji turned up on the third day, Sikh sangat posed the question where had he been. Guru Ji said that he had gone to Patal Puri where there was a class of devotees who wanted to see him there. He fulfilled their aspiration by also giving darshan to the five serpent-gods. This gave the barn the name 'Sundar Kotha'. It was decorated with sandalwood, fragrant substances, and camphor, and flower garlands. This created a fragrant atmosphere with flowers.
On the seventh day, the miraculous started happening in the sky and the spectator's eyes were opened wide. Gods like Brahma and Shiva came down to Kiratpur Sahib to welcome Satguru Ji, performing multiple miracles in his favour. Satguru Ji meditated for six days and sat on a padma asana throughout the process. He meditated on the seventh day, at the time of Amrit, after finishing the Japuji Sahib recitation, and leaned against the wall to leave his physical form, merging into his divine essence. Just like Lord Krishna left his body alone in the forest, Satguru also left his mortal coil in the same manner.
ਕਰਿ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਤਨ ਤ੍ਯਾਗਿ ਸਿਧਾਰੇ। ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਤਿਸੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰੇ।
ਸਭਿ ਦਿਸ਼ਿ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਰੋਕਨ ਕੀਨ। ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਗਨ ਸੰਕੋਚਿ ਕਰਿ ਲੀਨਿ॥੩੮॥
ਆਤਮ ਰਸ ਮਹਿ ਥਿਰੇ ਗੁਸਾਈਂ। ਜਹਾਂ ਦੈਤ ਕੋ ਲੇਸ਼ ਨ ਪਾਈ।
ਖਸ਼ਟ ਦਿਵਸ ਲੌ ਸਾਧਿ ਸਮਾਧਿ। ਥਿਰੇ ਅਚਲ ਹੀ ਰੂਪ ਅਗਾਧ ॥੩੯॥
ਸਪਤਮ ਦਿਨ ਕੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲੇ। ਤਨ ਕੋ ਤ੍ਯਾਗਨ ਕੀਨਿ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ।
ਲਾਇ ਕੰਧ ਕੇ ਸੰਗ ਪਿਛਾਰੀ। ਬੈਠੇ ਰਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤਿਸ ਬਾਰੀ ॥੪੦॥

ਗੁਰਬਿਲਾਸ ਪਾ: 6 ਵਿਚ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਸੰਮਤ 1695 ਤੇ ਚੇਤ ਸੁਦੀ ਪੰਚਮੀ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੈ। ਜੈਸਾ ਕਿ :
ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਏ। ਅਚਲ ਅਮਰ ਨਿਜ ਰੂਪ ਸਮਾਏ।
ਸੰਮਤ ਸੋਰਹ ਸੈ ਪਾਚਾਨਵ। ਚੇਤ ਸੁਦੀ ਥਿਤਿ ਪੰਚਮ ਗਾਵਨ। (ਗੁਰਬਿਲਾਸ ਪਾ: 6, ਅਧਿਆਇ 21)
ਸੰਪਰਦਾ ਦੇ ਗਿਆਨੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਇਸੇ ਸੰਮਤ ਨੂੰ ਸਹੀ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਹੈ, ਕੇਹਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਛਿੱਬਰ ਬੰਸਾਵਲੀਨਾਮਾ ਦਸਾਂ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀਆਂ ਕਾ ਵਿਚ ਵੀ 1695 ਸੰਮਤ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਜੈਸਾ ਕਿ :
ਸੰਮਤੁ ਸੋਲਾਂ ਸੈ ਪਚਾਨਵੇਂ ਭਏ। ਚੇਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਦੀ ਦਸਮੀਂ ਦੇਹ ਤਜ ਸੁਰਪੁਰਿ ਨੂੰ ਗਏ।
ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿ ਭਾਈ ਕਾਨ੍ਹ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਾਭਾ ਨੇ ਮਹਾਨ ਕੋਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਤਵਾਰੀਖ਼ ਗੁਰੂ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ ਵਿਚ 1701 ਬਿ: ਸੰਮਤ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਭਾਈ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਸਿੰਘ ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਲਿਖਦੇ ਹਨ :
ਸੋਲਹਿ ਸਤ ਪਚਾਨਵੇ ਸਾਲ। ਚੇਤ ਪੰਚਮੀ ਸ਼ੁਦੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ |
ਸੱਚਖੰਡ ਕੋ ਤਬਹਿ ਪਧਾਰੇ। ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਰਾਇ ਤਖਤ ਬੈਠਾਰੇ ॥੬॥

On the seventh day, Sri Harirai Sahib Ji himself goes and opens the door. Sri Tegh Bahadur Ji, Suraj Mall, and Ani Roy moved forward for the last Darshan. The water of Sutlej was used for washing Satguru Ji's body.
A breathtaking Biban was arranged, embellished with so many flowers and garlands. The rabbis were there to sing the holy verses and to chant the Shabads in Maru Raga. Both the wives of Guru Sahib Ji and Sangat in huge numbers had come to say goodbye to the Guru Ji. The voices of 'Dhan Guru, Dhan Guru' resonated throughout the space, while those who could not reach bowed from afar.
Four individuals were chosen to carry Guru Ji's Biban(Vehicle): Guru Ji's Sahibzadas, Suraj Mall and Sri Tegh Bahadur Ji, Bhai Bhana Ji - a descendent of Baba Buddha Sahib Ji, and Rai Jodh Ji. They hoisted the Biban and Rababis chanted Shabad as they moved Guru Ji's body to the pyre site, where a sandalwood pyre was set ready. The dignified body of Satguru was placed on the pyre, and Suraj Mall Ji performed the final rites, offering fire to the pyre. Therefore, he was cremated.
ਸੋ ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਸੋਹਿਲੇ ਦਾ ਪਾਠ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਦਾਹ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਦੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਅੰਤਮ ਰੀਤ ਸੰਪੂਰਨ ਕੀਤੀ। ਇਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬਾਨ ਵਰਗਾ ਸੂਰਵੀਰ ਯੋਧਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ, ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਗੁਰੂ ਵਰਗਾ ਸੂਰਮਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਤਾਂ ਦਸਵੇਂ ਜਾਮੇ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੀ।
ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਭਾਈ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਭਾਵਨਾ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਜੈਸਾ ਕਿ :
ਦੋਹਰਾ॥ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਹਰਿਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਬਰ ਸਨਧਬੱਧ ਧਰਿ ਧ੍ਯਾਨ
ਬੰਦ ਦੋਊ ਕਰਿ ਬੰਦਨਾ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਦੁਤਿ ਮਦਨਾਨ ॥੧੫॥
ਕਬਿੱਤ : ਅਮਲ ਕਮਲ ਜੈਸੇ ਕੈਸੇ ਕਹੋਂ ਪਦ ਜੁਗ,
ਰਜਨੀ ਮੈਂ ਆਨ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਤਿ ਜਿਨ ਬਾਣ ਹੈ।
ਜਾਨਿਯੇ ਸੰਤਾਨ ਕੇ ਸਮਾਨ ਬਨੈ ਅਨਬਨ,
ਦਾਨੀ ਮਨ ਕਾਮਨਾ ਨ ਦਾਨੀ ਮੋਖ ਗ੍ਯਾਨ ਹੈ।
ਚਿੰਤਾਮਣਿ ਜੈਸੇ ਨਖ ਭਾਖੇ ਨ ਪਰਤਿ ਮੁਖ,
ਮੋਹ ਨ ਮਿਟਾਵੈ ਦੁਖ ਜਾਨਤਿ ਜਹਾਨ ਹੈ।
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਪਦ ਆਨੰਦ ਕੇ ਕੰਦ ਜੋਊ,
ਉਪਮੇਯ ਆਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਆਪੇ ਉਪਮਾਨ ਹੈਂ॥੧੬॥
