His martyrdom is a beacon of light for all those who cherish freedom of conscience & belief. Nowhere one can come across a person laying down his life for the protection of values that he himself wanted to modify. But the great Guru did so to teach the coming generations that everybody has a right to profess & practice the religion of his choice.

Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Parkash Gurpurab
The ninth Guru of the Sikhs - Guru Tegh Bahadur occupies a very special niche in the psyche of not only the Sikhs but also all Indians. His life deserves a wider audience than that of Sikhs alone. He was the second Sikh Guru to be martyred. In the early 17th century, the Muslim rulers of India had become fanatically intolerant and both Guru Arjan and Guru Tegh Bahadur were martyrs to the cause of religious freedom, but in the case of the ninth Guru, the issue was cast in harsher and clearer terms.
Guru Tegh Bahadur was not a Hindu. He followed none of the Hindu practices or doctrines. Yet, he was willing to lay down his life so that Hindus would retain the right to practice their own faith. What hung in the balance was the right of a people to religious freedom - freedom of choice. These are principles that in this 21st century we all recognize as sacrosanct
