Hukamnama Transliteration in English

There is but one God.
He is realized through the grace of the True Guru.

( Ujjal Kaiha Chilkana.. )
The tinned copper is lustrous bright, but when rubbed, it turns black.
The discoloration doesn't go by washing,
It may be washed a hundred times back.
They are real friends who accompany you on your way.
Where the reckoning is called
They stand by you for the day (1)

Your houses with domes and mansions painted all over,
When brought down, they are found empty under the cover. (2)

The men in white lodging at places of pilgrimage,
Where they catch and kill creatures, cannot have a clean image. (3)

I am like a cotton-wool tree that deludes,
I am like the one whose fruits are of no use. (4)

Purblind, I carry a load; the path is arduous.
With eyes I can't see, how could I achieve success? (5)

Odd occupations, being go~d and clever is of no need.
You should take to meditation, says Nanak,
So that from a bondage you are freed. (6) 1.3

Hukamnama Translation in English

"By the Grace of the Lord-Sublime, Truth personified & attainable through the Guru's guidance.''

O, Brother! Our mind is bright like the brass utensil ( Ujjal Kaiha Chilkana.. ), which is ·shining (emitting) with lustre, but if it is rubbed with our hand, it produces black soot (dirt) Even if we were to wash this brass utensil (hundreds of) umpteen times, it cannot get rid of this dirt. (1)

The true friend or companion is one, who would accompany (help) us toward Lord's attainment. (our virtuous deeds are only our true companions). When we would be required to account for our actions (in the world) before the god of justice (Dharam Raj) then our companion in the form of good actions would protect us against any ills or afflictions. (Pause - 1) The temporary houses and palatial buildings with high domes even, made beautiful with outer wall paintings but without any inmates or decorations within, will be as good as empty and dilapidated buildings that are of no use to anyone. (A person without imbibing True Name is just like a dead person). (2)

Cranes and Parrots

Just as the cranes which are white (in colour) and stay at holy places but are busy killing and eating away fish or other worms, cannot become swans (cannot be called swans). Similarly, men with sinful actions cannot become saints, even though they appear flawless (pure) by bathing at the holy places of pilgrimage. (3)

Just as the parrots get thrilled at seeing the (beautiful) Simmal tree though its fruit is not worth eating and is useless, we are full of vicious thoughts 'and sinful actions. (engaged in useless actions) (4)

How could an egoistic person cross this arduous ocean of life successfully, just as a blind man cannot cross a high mountainous (hilly) area, carrying a heavy load on his head? A person without any spiritual knowledge (without eyes of knowledge) cannot follow this difficult terrain of a purposeful life. (5)

O, Brother! Without the support of the Lord's True Name, our cleverness or good deeds are useless. O Nanak! Let us always recite the Lord's True Name which would enable us to attain salvation by ridding us of worldly bondage. (6-1-3)

Explained in Simple English

Soohee, First Mehl, Sixth House: One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

Bronze is bright and shiny ( Ujjal Kaiha Chilkana ), but when it is rubbed, its blackness appears. Washing it, its impurity is not removed, even if it is washed a hundred times. 1

They alone are my friends, who travel along with me; and in that place, where the accounts are called for, they appear standing with me. 1. Pause

There are houses, mansions, and tall buildings, painted on all sides; but they are empty within, and they crumble like useless ruins. 2

The herons in their white feathers dwell in the sacred shrines of pilgrimage. They tear apart and eat living beings, and so they are not called white. 3

My body is like the Simmal tree; seeing me, other people are fooled. Its fruits are useless - just like the qualities of my body. 4

The blind man is carrying such a heavy load, and his journey through the mountains is so long. My eyes can see, but I cannot find the Way. How can I climb up and cross over the mountain? .5

What good does it do to serve, and be good, and be clever? O Nanak, contemplate the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and you shall be released from bondage. 6.1.3

Ujjal Kaiha... Punjabi Translation
