Purab Likhiya Kamavana

1. English Translation

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੩ ॥

ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ਜਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਲਿਖਿਆਸੁ ॥
ਮੋਹ ਠਗਉਲੀ ਪਾਈਅਨੁ ਵਿਸਰਿਆ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥

( Purab Likhiya Kamavana.. ) O, Brother! The person, who is fortunate enough from the beginning, being predestined by the Lord's Will, gets united with the Lord and recites His Name. It is only when this human being forsakes the True Name of the Lord, the treasure of all virtues, that he gets engrossed in the love of the worldly falsehood (Maya), like the deceitful (drug) plant.

ਮਤੁ ਜਾਣਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਜੀਵਦਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਮੁਇਆਸੁ ॥
ਜਿਨੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਸੇ ਬਹਣਿ ਨ ਮਿਲਨੀ ਪਾਸਿ ॥

In fact, such a person should not be considered alive (living an active life) as he suffered his spiritual death due to his dual-mindedness. Such persons, who have not recited True Name in the company of the Guru-minded persons, are not provided a chance to join the company of the Lord's presence, (to sit in His presence).

ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਬਹੁ ਅਤਿ ਘਣਾ ਪੁਤੁ ਕਲਤੁ ਨ ਸਾਥਿ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਸਿ ॥
ਲੋਕਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਮੁਹੁ ਕਾਲਾ ਹੋਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਉਭੇ ਸਾਸ ॥
ਮਨਮੁਖਾ ਨੋ ਕੋ ਨ ਵਿਸਹੀ ਚੁਕਿ ਗਇਆ ਵੇਸਾਸੁ ॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾ ਨੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਅਗਲਾ ਜਿਨਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੧॥

At the time of death, such (faithless) persons undergo a lot of suffering as the son and wife (or other near and dear ones) do not accompany him (to the next world). Such a person heaves sighs of helplessness and misery and gets disgraced in the world also (gets his face blackened). No one has any faith in such self-willed (faithless) persons as they have lost all confidence in him. O Nanak! The Guru-minded persons, however, enjoy eternal bliss and joy, by reciting and inculcating the love of True Name in their hearts. (1)

Mahala 3rd

ਮਃ ੩ ॥ ਸੇ ਸੈਣ ਸੇ ਸਜਣਾ ਜਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੇ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

The persons, who serve the Lord and recite the True Name in the company of the Guru-minded persons in the state are our true friends and real companions, as they are always (day and night) carrying out the ordains of the Guru as per His Will, and are immersed in the Lord's True Name.

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਲਗੇ ਸਜਣ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਜਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਵੇਕਾਰ ॥
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਆਪ ਸੁਆਰਥੀ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਨ ਸਕਹਿ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮੇਟਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

However, faithless persons, who are engrossed in their egoism due to dual-mindedness, cannot be considered our true friends. In fact, faithless persons are so selfish that they cannot help anyone else in their need. O Nanak! We function as predestined by the Lord's Will (Nanak, Poorab Likhia Kamavna) and according to our fortune (luck) and no one has any power to alter our fate. (2)

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੇ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਆਪਿ ਖੇਲੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਆਪਿ ਸਿਰਜਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ॥

Pouri

O Lord! You have created this universe Yourself and have enacted this wonderful worldly drama. You have Yourself only created the three-pronged (Maya) worldly falsehood (based on three things- lust for power, greed or jealousy, and Partial Peace ) and have engrossed the whole world in the love of this Maya.

ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਲੇਖਾ ਮੰਗੀਐ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇਆ ॥
ਜਿਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੇ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ॥
ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਘੁਮਾਇਆ ॥੩॥

The persons, who lead a life under the influence of their egoistic tendencies, have to account for their actions before the Lord (through the god of justice) and are subject to the torture of the cycle of births and deaths. But the persons, who are blessed with His Grace (Lord's Grace) and benevolence are enabled to realize the secrets of Nature and the Truth. I would offer myself as a sacrifice to the Guru and surrender myself completely to Him. (3)

Sloka IIIrd
One obtains what one is destined to,
What the Creator Himself has inscribed.
One is administered the dose of attachment,
Which makes one forget the Lord prized.
Don't you treat the world living
In duality, it is mesmerized.
Those who meditate not on Name as advised by the Guru,
They find no seat by the Lord's side.
He undergoes severe torture.
Neither progeny, nor wife, nor anyone else
Would him company provide.
For people his face is blackened,
For himself his person he comes to deride.
Nobody trusts the self-possessed,
Nor anyone has faith in him in the world wide.
Says Nanak, the devotees have peace in plenty
Who have the Lord in their heart come to reside. (I)

Mahala III

They are fellow-travelers and friends
Who, inspired by the Guru, meet as a happenstance.
They abide by what the True Guru says day and night,
With truth they have a romance.
Those given to duality are no friends,
Who are given to worthless pride.
The self-possessed is ever selfish,
He can tum no tide.
Says Nanak, one obtains what is ordained at the Primal Time,
(Purab likhia kamavna)
None dare it set aside. (2)

Pauri

You created the world Yourself and started this game,
Brought about the Three Qualities
And enhanced the attachment with Maya in chain.
Caught in ego one must render account,
And one must go as one came.
Those who are favoured by Lord Himself,
Them their True Guru would claim.
I am sacrifice unto my Guru,
Ever and ever I laud His Name. (3)

3. Translation in Hindi

श्लोक महला ३ ॥ ( Purab Likhiya Kamavana.. )

पूर्व कर्मों के अनुसार सृष्टिकर्ता ने जो जीव की तकदीर में लिख दिया है, उसने वही कर्म करना है। माया ने जीव के मुँह में मोह रूपी ठग बूटी डाल दी है, जिसके कारण उसे गुणों का भण्डार ईश्वर भूल गया है। इस जगत को जिंदा मत समझो, चूंकि यह तो दुविधा में फॅसकर मरा हुआ है।

जिन्होंने गुरुमुख बनकर परमात्मा के नाम को याद नहीं किया, उन्हें उसके पास बैठने का अवसर प्राप्त नहीं होता। वे बहुत अधिक दु:ख भोगते हैं और अन्तिम समय उनके पुत्र एवं पत्नी में से कोई भी उनका साथ नहीं देता। लोगों के भीतर उनका तिरस्कार किया जाता है और वे कठिन श्वास अंदर खींचते हैं।

मनमुख व्यक्तियों पर कोई भी भरोसा नहीं करता चूंकि उनका भरोसा टूट चुका होता है। हे नानक ! जिनके अन्तर्मन में परमात्मा के नाम का निवास होता है, उन गुरुमुखों को अपार सुख प्राप्त होता है॥ १॥

महला ३॥

जो लोग गुरुमुख बनकर सहज-स्वभाव मिलते हैं, वही संबंधी एवं सज्जन हैं। वे तो रात-दिन सतगुरु की इच्छानुसार ही कार्य करते हैं और सत्य में ही समाए रहते हैं। जो लोग बड़ा अभिमान एवं पाप करते हुए द्वैतभाव में लीन रहते हैं, उन्हें सज्जन नहीं कहना चाहिए।

मनमुख व्यक्ति स्वयं बड़े स्वार्थी हैं और वे कोई भी कार्य संवार नहीं सकते। हे नानक ! वे वही कर्म करते हैं, जो पूर्व कर्मो के अनुसार विधाता ने लिखा होता है और कोई भी उसे मिटा नहीं सकता ॥ २ ॥

पउड़ी॥

हे परमेश्वर ! तूने स्वयं ही जगत पैदा करके स्वयं ही इस खेल का निर्माण किया है। तूने स्वयं ही त्रिगुणों (रज, तम, सत) का निर्माण करके मोह-माया में वृद्धि की है। अहंकार में किए हुए कर्मों के कारण मनुष्य से दरगाह में कर्मों का लेखा मांगा जाता है और तब ही वह जगत में जन्मता-मरता रहता है।

जिन पर ईश्वर स्वयं कृपा करता है, उन्हें गुरु उपदेश देता है। मैं अपने गुरु पर बलिहारी जाता हूँ और सदैव ही उस पर न्यौछावर हूँ॥ ३॥

4. Hukamnama in Punjabi

( Purab Likhiya Kamavana.. ) (ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ) ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ ਜੋ (ਸੰਸਕਾਰ-ਰੂਪ ਲੇਖ) ਲਿਖਿਆ (ਭਾਵ, ਉੱਕਰਿਆ) ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਲਿਖ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਜ਼ਰੂਰ) ਕਮਾਉਣਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ; (ਉਸ ਲੇਖ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ) ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਠਗਬੂਟੀ (ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ) ਮਿਲ ਗਈ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹਰੀ ਵਿੱਸਰ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।

(ਉਸ) ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਜੀਊਂਦਾ ਨਾ ਸਮਝੋ (ਜੋ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਮੁਇਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ; ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਕੋਲ ਬਹਿਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ।

ਉਹ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਦੁੱਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਮੁਏ ਪਏ ਸਨ, ਉਹ) ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਤਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਏਗਾ; ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੂੰਹ ਕਾਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ (ਭਾਵ, ਸ਼ਰਮਿੰਦੇ ਹੋਏ) ਤੇ ਹਾਹੁਕੇ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ; ਮਨਮੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਸਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਤਬਾਰ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਸੁਖ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।੧।

ਮਃ ੩ ॥

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋਏ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਪਾ ਨਿਵਾਰ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਭਾਵਿਕ ਹੀ) ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਭਲੇ ਲੋਕ ਹਨ ਤੇ (ਸਾਡੇ) ਸਾਥੀ ਹਨ; ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਮੰਨਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸੱਚੇ ਹਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਸਮਾਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਖੀਦਾ ਜੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਤਲਬ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ (ਹੋਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਵਾਰ ਸਕਦੇ; (ਪਰ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਕੀਹ ਦੋਸ਼?) (ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ) ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਕਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ (ਸੰਸਕਾਰ-ਰੂਪ ਲੇਖ) ਕਮਾਉਣਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਮਿਟਾਉਣ-ਜੋਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ।੧।

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਰਚ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਖੇਡ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੈ; ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਤਿੰਨ ਗੁਣ ਬਣਾਏ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਵਧਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।

(ਇਸ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਉਪਜੇ) ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ (ਲੱਗਿਆਂ) (ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ) ਲੇਖਾ ਮੰਗੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਜੰਮਣਾ ਮਰਨਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ; ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਹਰੀ ਆਪ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਇਹ) ਸਮਝ ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ।

(ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ) ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਵਾਰਨੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।੩।
