According to Sikh Traditions, Bhai Mani Singh during his tenure in charge of the Harmindar Sahib (1721 – 34) compiled the Granth as ‘Dasvein Patshah Ka Granth.’ This however was not the only version, an independent collection is said to have been compiled by Baba Deep Singh and a third attributed to Sukkha Singh of Patna. The greater part of the three Granths were the same, but there were minor differences.

In 1885, a committee was set up by the Amritsar Singh Sabha and in 1902 it published its authorized version of the Dasam Granth. The Dasam Granth (Punjabi) is a substantial work comprising 1428 pages. Four groups of works can be found in it. There is the autobiographical (Bachitra Natak and Zafarnama), and the devotional works (Jaap Sahib, Akal Ustat, Gian Prabodh, and Sabad Hazare). Then there are Swayey and Shastra Mala. The fourth is a collection of mythical narratives – Chandi Charitra, Chandi di var, Chaubis Avtar, Tria Chaitra, and Pakhyan Chitra.

दशम ग्रंथ एक दर्जन से अधिक रचनाओं का एक विशाल संकलन है, जिनमें से कुछ, संपूर्ण या आंशिक रूप से, सिखों के नित्यनियम प्रार्थनाओं का हिस्सा हैं।

सिख परंपरा के अनुसार भाई मनी सिंह, जिन्होंने हरमिंदर साहिब (1721 – 34) के दौरान अपने प्रभारी कार्यकाल के दौरान ग्रंथ को ‘दसवें पातिशाह का ग्रंथ’ के रूप में संकलित किया। हालांकि यह एकमात्र संस्करण नहीं था, कहा जाता है कि एक स्वतंत्र संग्रह बाबा दीप सिंह द्वारा संकलित किया गया था और तीसरा पटना के सुक्खा सिंह ने भी संकलित किया था। तीनों ग्रन्थों का अधिकांश भाग एक ही था, परन्तु कुछ कुछ भिन्नताएँ थीं।

१८८५ में, अमृतसर सिंह सभा द्वारा एक समिति का गठन किया गया और १९०२ में इसने ‘दसम ग्रंथ’ के अपने अधिकृत संस्करण को प्रकाशित किया। दशम ग्रंथ 1428 पृष्ठों का एक महत्वपूर्ण काव्य ग्रंथ है। इसमें कार्यों के चार समूह मिल सकते हैं। आत्मकथात्मक (बचित्रा नाटक और जफरनामा) हैं, भक्ति कार्य हैं (जाप साहिब, अकाल उस्तत, ज्ञान प्रबोध और शबद हजारे)। तीसरे भाग में सवैये और शस्त्र नाम माला। चौथा भाग पौराणिक कथाओं का संग्रह है जिसमें चंडी चरित्र, चंडी दी वार, चौबीस अवतार, त्रिया चरित्र और चरित्रोपाख्यान सम्मिलित हैं।
