English Translation

Slok Mahalla 3rd
( Rainair Mahe Anant Hai Koori Aave Jaye... )

This worldly ocean is the Abode of the limitless Lord, without whose realization, this transient world is being passed through the cycle of births and deaths. But the whole world, engrossed in self-mindedness (due to its cleverness and egoism) undergoes many sufferings or faces punishment. This worldly ocean is replete (full of) the jewels of knowledge, love, and detachment but all these virtues are engrained within (attained) only through good fortune based on our actions. O Nanak! We could gain all the nine worldly treasures, provided we follow the Lord's Will (and function as per His dictates). (1)

Mahalla 3rd

The persons, who have not served the True Guru in the state of Equipoise, waste this human life engrossed in egoism. The lotus of the heart does not blossom forth (one does not get enlightened) without partaking the nectar of True Name with the tongue. Thus the self-willed (faithless) person perishes (dies) in the love of worldly falsehood (Maya), being engrossed in vicious and sinful actions. Cursed be this life and cursed is this worldly stay without the support of (recitation of) the True Name of the True Lord. But if the Lord bestows on us His Grace and benevolence, then we could become humble like the slaves of the slaves of the Lord. They by serving the True Guru (day and night) all the time, we will not desert the company of the holy saints (the Guru). Then this human being leads a detached life though being a householder, just as the lotus flower remains untouched (unaffected) by water, though remaining in the water. O Nanak! The Lord, a treasure of all virtues, then enables all the beings to function as per His dictates according to His Will, as it pleases the Lord. (2)

Pouri

Initially, for many ages (thirty-six Yugas), there was complete darkness and confusion when the Lord started creating this Universe. (in different forms). Then the Lord Himself created this world, giving it the necessary (required) wisdom of action. Then the Smrities and Shastras (books of lore) were created by the Lord, with the on-set of virtuous or sinful actions (by human beings) being accounted for. Then the Lord enabled some persons to realize His secrets through His Grace, with the guidance and recognition of the Guru's Word (sabad). The Lord pervades all (functions) the activities, being omnipresent, and the cause and effect of everything. Then merges some persons with Himself through His Grace.(7)

ਸਲੋਕ ਤੀਜੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ ॥ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਝੂਠੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਨਿਜ ਦੀ ਮਰਜ਼ੀ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਟੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਘਣੇਰਾ ਡੰਡਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਰੂਪੀ ਰਤਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਖਾਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਮੂਹ ਵਸਤੂਆਂ ਹਨ; ਪ੍ਰਤੂੰ ਚੰਗੇ ਅਮਲਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੀ ਬੰਦਾ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ, ਜੇਕਰ ਬੰਦਾ ਉਸ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅੰਦਰ ਟੁਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਨੌ ਖਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥

ਤੀਜੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ ॥ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਹੰਗਤਾ ਅੰਦਰ ਗੁਆ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੱਖਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦਿਲ ਕੰਵਲ ਪ੍ਰਫੁੱਲਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ॥ ਆਪ ਹੁਦਰਾ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਖਾ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਦੌਲਤ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਰਬਾਦ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਇਕ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ, ਲਾਣ੍ਹਤ ਮਾਰੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜਿੰਦਗੀ ਅਤੇ ਲਾਣ੍ਹਤ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ॥ ਜਦ ਸੱਚਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਆਪ ਮਿਹਰ ਧਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦ ਉਹ ਸਾਈਂ ਦੇ ਗੋਲਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਤਦ, ਰੈਣ ਦਿਹੁੰ ਉਹ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਟਹਿਲ ਕਮਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਨੇੜਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਦਾ ॥ ਜਿਸ ਤਰਾਂ ਕੰਵਲ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਏਸੇ ਤਰਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਘਰਬਾਰੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਟੰਕ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਹੇ ਗੋਲੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਖਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈ; ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਕੋਲੋ ਕਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਛੱਤੀ ਯੁੱਗ ਅਨ੍ਹੇਰ ਘੁੱਪ ਸੀ ॥ ਤਦ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਕੀਤਾ ॥ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਰਚੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਚ ਸਮਝ ਬਖਸ਼ੀ ਹੈ ॥ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਆਂ ਬਣਾਈਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਬਦੀ ਤੇ ਨੇਕੀ ਫਹਿਰਿਸਤ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤੀ ॥ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਮਝਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਮਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਖੁਦ-ਬ-ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਸਾਈਂ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਮੁਆਫ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥

श्लोक महला ३। इस जगत्-सागर में एक परमात्मा ही अनंत है, शेष सारी झूठी दुनिया जन्म-मरण के चक्र में पड़ी रहती है। जो व्यक्ति जीवन में मनमर्जी करता है, उसे बहुत दण्ड भोगना पड़ता है। इस जगत्-सागर में सबकुछ उपलब्ध है परन्तु भाग्य से ही प्राप्ति होती है। हे नानक ! यदि जीव परमात्मा की इच्छानुसार चले तो उसे नौ निधियाँ प्राप्त हो जाती हैं॥ १॥ |

महला ३॥ जिसने सहज स्वभाव श्रद्धा से सतगुरु की सेवा नहीं की, अहंकार में ही उसके जन्म का अंत हो गया है। जिसकी रसना ने हरि-नाम रूपी रस का स्वाद नहीं चखा, उसके हृदय-कमल में प्रकाश नहीं हुआ। वह मनमुखी माया रूपी विष खाकर ही मर गया है और माया के मोह ने उसका बिनाश कर दिया है। एक परमात्मा के नाम बिना उसका जीना एवं रहना धिक्कार योग्य है। जब सच्चा प्रभु अपनी कृपा-दृष्टि करता है तो वह दासों का दास बन जाता है। तब वह रात-दिन सतगुरु की सेवा करता रहता है और कभी भी उसका साथ नहीं छोड़ता। जैसे कमल का फूल जल में निर्लिप्त रहता है, वैसे ही गृहस्थ में रहकर त्यागी बना रहता है। हे नानक ! जैसे गुणों के भण्डार परमात्मा को उपयुक्त लगता है, हर कोई जीव उसकी मर्जी से वैसे ही करता है॥ २॥

पउड़ी ॥ ३६ युग घोर अन्धेरा बना रहा था, फिर आप ही उसने स्वयं को प्रगट किया। परमात्मा ने स्वयं ही सृष्टि-रचना करके जीवों को सुमति प्रदान की। उसने स्मृतियों एवं शास्त्रों की रचना की तथा पाप-पुण्य के कर्मों का लेखा लिखा है। जिसे वह ज्ञान देता है, वही इस भेद को समझता है और फिर उसका मन सत्य नाम में विश्वस्त हो जाता है। परमात्मा सर्वव्यापक है और स्वयं ही कृपा करके जीव को साथ मिला लेता है॥ ७॥
